Amen it would be boring if everyone was available from the start.

Thats why i felt that both versions of marvel vs capcom 3 was a little borning to me barely any unlockable stuff.

I would have loved it better if there was a lot more too unlock like in marvel vs capcom 2
Speaking of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, isn't this roster shaping up to be about that size? Exciting huh?

If there were no unlockable characters then I could get into practicing a main character right away without feeling like I have to unlock everyone before I really start to train.

Buuuut I would much rather have unlockables. It's much more fun and I love getting an unexpected "CHALLENGER APPROACHING".

It gives a sense of accomplishment too once they are all unlocked. And it's fun to race your friends to see who can unlock all first

Wasn't it confirmed that amiibos would release in waves? Unlockables likely wouldn't be in the first wave. Problem solved.

With all past Smash games, you had to go through and unlock additional characters. However, I feel that this time, there will be no characters hidden behind the veil. All characters will be available from the start; here's my theory.

As shown here, Mario is being customized. But as we all know, Mario has always been a starter. However, I think all the characters will be available from the get-go. They will all be "blank slates" by default (as in, no customization). Instead of unlocking new characters, you'll be able to unlock parts to deck them out with. So that way, everyone can play as their favorite characters from the start, but you're still encouraged to play the game and unlock things for them. There's still unlockables to go after, just in a different way.

Another reason; these guys. Why lock characters away if your consumers can buy figurines of them?
I always thought that they wouldn't release all the characters right away. I think all the figures in your pic are starters. You have to have the challenger approaching in Smash too, that is half the excitement of Smash unlocking someone new and learning their move set.

I am probably going to go with the precedent available in addition to my own theories about the roster size, as if there were no unlockable characters, that would imply that Sakurai would reveal every character prior to launch as they would all be revealed on launch anyways.

I do like the charm of unlockables.

Besides, how else are people going to hold out until their very last ounce of hope that (insert character name here) is in the game? :p

I'd settle for unlockable STAGES, though. That's still something to look forward to, after all...

Unless he starts announcing a character every week, I doubt he could manage to unveil them all before release.

People could always hold out their very last ounce of hope that their character will be DLC for the game. :troll:
Too true.

I was actually THINKING about DLC at the back of my mind when I posted that, heh...

Maybe I should've said "Hold out 'til the last ounce of hope that Chorus Kids AREN'T in the game." ;)

That actually gives me another idea: an "Unlock all characters" option that would simply unlock everything.

That way, you could work to unlock it if you want or just get it out of the way otherwise.

Or he could reveal them all tomorrow just to **** with us.
He'll reveal TWO HUNDRED characters and say "Five of these are newcomers in SSB4. Can you guess which ones?"

No. That is too reasonable and not restricting. Games are not meant to be fun! It is EITHER/OR!

Interesting theory but I think there will be unlock able characters. I think the system in Brawl worked fine where there was multiple ways to unlock characters. On top of that, unlocking characters in pas Smash games was easy anyway, I really don't see the big deal. The starting roster is going to be huge. I don't know about anyone else but I feel as though there are going to be at least 10 characters I will "main" before I decide on one. I'd be surprised if a person doesn't find a character they like in the starting roster. :/

Technically I'm not even sure we can call it a theory. I haven't seen anything to indicate that all of the characters we're seeing will be autounlocked from the beginning. It's more of a hypothesis that we can't really test.

Series history suggests unlockables and this game has not shown that that will change.

I fully believe there will be unlockables. For me, I don't care if I see all of the characters before I get my hands on the game. As long as I don't know how to unlock them, the thrill will still (holy consonance, Batman!) be there.

Waves. If action figures, Skylanders, and Disney Infinity release in waves, it is highly likely so will the Amiibos. Wave 1 I can see being, if not all, most of the starters. Then wave 2 could start off the unlockables, etc. In this way, people will not get characters faster and won't be spoiled if they have been living under a rock due to the 3ds version being out for months. And it makes sense that using an unlockable character's Amiibo, while the character is locked, will unlock them. I feel like this was hinted at E3 during a Treehouse segment when I was watching. And I'm sure when you play Smash Run and other game modes that it is made so that you will never obtain equipment for a character you don't have yet. There is way too much evidence pointing toward unlockables still being a thing. Sakurai is the director, he will do what he wants. We have to stop looking at what was done with Mario Kart 8 and fighting games made by other people and applying it to Smash.

You know that no unlockables takes out the thrill of coming across a new character or the surprise of the character itself. And that is one of Smash's defining features. Before I had access to the internet, I was all "OMG NEW CHARACTERZ" Without those unlockables, the feeling is taken.

SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER!

So I was looking down this thread and heard someone say the full roster will be leaked and then someone else said it won't... Will it or will it not be leaked, that's all I'm asking.

I have a feeling we will still have unlock-able characters, but all characters will be revealed before the game releases. Mainly because Sakurai said every newcomer is going to have a trailer, and hates people spoiling things... so he's going to spoil it himself. :troll:

I believed this the moment he said so.
