Brawl has been out for 3 years. I still remember all of the theory crafting back in 2007 about what it was going to be like and how amazing it was going to be.

Here is my question.... what is your Brawl story?

I remember it was back in 5th grade and Brawl was coming out and I was so hyped.

Sonic was confirmed for playable character, Diddy was gonna be in it, Kirby was coming back, and we had a bad *** like Meta-Knight coming in

The rest didn't matter

Then I played the game and hated it a year later

end of story

My story starts with a site called Gametalk.
It was pretty fun and incredibly active. There was about 60+ active people on one forum.
Eventually clans were started. One was called Faded Enigma and it pretty much dominated. Every other clan was pretty much a flop. I started one with another friend and it eventually became the second biggest clan on the website.
In June of 2008 Gametalk closed. Most people that were on the website went to either my clan or to FE. Eventually my clan died and I came here. In October however the clan was revived.
Long story short, it survived a large part of 2009 and ended up having I think close to 70 members at one point. Also in 2009, I tried to expand Sheik as much as I could. If any of you remember the hype from the Sheik footstool combo..... yeah.... I started that. :urg: lol
In the end I quit Brawl and retired the position of leadership at the site. It ended up breaking apart and split into 2 or 3 clans... idk. A lot of people just made chatzy's and I guess played spy. lol I didn't play Brawl for almost all of 2010, until about October. I briefly got back into the game and joined the smash lab. Late December thought I quit again because of the military and various other reasons with the hopes of going to one last tourney.... which also failed. lol
So now I want to just go to one more tourney as a final farewell to Brawl before May.

Well, I was extremely hyped for Brawl when it was announced. I followed Gimpy's coverage of the demos and whatnot, and eventually I got a Wii for the sole purpose of playing Brawl. Swept away in the hype, I never let myself think that the game was anything less than amazing. I've been on Smashboards since 2006 (my first account still exists here, I just don't use it), so I was here for all the hype building.

I really saw it as an opportunity to get my friends into Smash so we could all go to tournaments together, something I couldn't do in Melee's age due to my age. Well, I got a group of my friends into it (namely Palpi), and we practiced together almost every day. I started off maining ICs since I mained them in Melee. After my first tournament, I realized how lame people play against ICs, so I moved around mains for awhile until I settled on Diddy.

Me and Palpi went to most of Inui's tournaments for a period of time, went to CoT4 and Apex, hosted our own tournament, then just got tired of Brawl's metagame and came back to Melee. So here I am now. Playing Melee. That's my Brawl story.

I was pumped for Brawl, I got it a week after it came out. I never really had a main. I always had fun playing it casually. In late 09 my friend got me to go a tournament, and I finally got serious about Brawl last summer. I have been playing competitively maining Snake ever since.

I was intrigued by how Brawl looked, but I had to wait until Christmas of 08 to get it. I was pretty bewildered by how it felt in comparison to Melee. I wasn't sure just how much I'd like it, but I was impressed with the graphics, music, and character selection at the very least. After giving it more time, doing all that there was to do in the 1 player modes (even though I wasn't very good at it :awesome:) and enjoying the daily dose of created stages and HRC/BTT videos, it really grew on me and I decided it was a genuinely good game, even if Melee would always be better in my mind.

Now, I did know that there was a competitive smash community from seeing Melee MLG videos. The only thing was, I didn't know who any of the players were or if there where any major smash websites. What inspired me to get better at Smash was watching videos of Zhouten playing Ganondorf. I myself was a Captain Falcon guy, and watching someone play such a slow, lanky character so fluidly and expertly was amazing me. From there, I discovered Smashboards and AIB. I go by a different user-name now, and despite the fact that I've never gone to an IRL tournament, I have enjoyed learning so much about the game, watching top level smash videos, and watching myself become a (slightly) better player. It's been good times, and I hope they aren't over ;).

Hah, I don't really have a "Brawl Story", I just one day was bored, had 50 bucks, and wanted a new game. I wasn't very knowledgeable about Smash Bros at that time, so I thought I'd just get the newest installment, and it turned out to be Brawl. Now if only I knew to get a Gamecube controller at the same time, being stuck with nothing but the Wii remote for 2 weeks wasn't the funnest way to play this new game.

I came into brawl as a melee player, I instantly picked up peach as my main, and could not play any other character (she was largely unchanged, and I mained her in melee). Although I had trouble adapting a few minute changes, I had a huge head start on most other players. After a few months, a large brawl scene had started, but most melee players had already dropped it. I've continued to play both, preferring melee, but playing more brawl due to the lack of any melee players any my area. I'm pretty much ready to drop both, but continue play brawl at local tournaments for fun.

It was with great anticipation that I waited for Brawl's release date. I love Melee, always will, so I figured the sequel could only be that much better. I kept up on all the dojo updates, got hyped up beyond belief. Heck, I even preordered the game, which is probably only the 3rd or 4th preorder I've ever done in my life.

Release day, game came out, bunch of friends got it, fun was had. Lots of fun. For a few months. Dedicated myself to being Snake, and I even wrote the first guide for him. I played so much wifi and got really involved in the early metagame scene for Snake. I kept saying to my friends that this game would never get old. I even beat some of the best in the Midwest back in the day at a local tourney, and I have people who can vouch for me to you nay-sayers.

It wasn't but a year later that it did get old, and I went back to Melee. Yes, Brawl can be competitive, but it did not take long to become stale and probably always will be casual for me. Melee never gets old. Never.

Don't even know why I felt like posting that.

I remember being hyped to hell, theory crafting and all while the game was still in development.

When it was released, it became the game at all Game Parties my friends and I have and we all played and loved it to death. However, it became quickly apparent that it was not a game to be played competitively. Reguardless, I'm not a tourney *** who demands RAEL BALINCE AND PHSICS to enjoy a game.

Sure, I will admit that it got stale after a while but every once and a while my friends and I still play and enjoy it.

I first played Brawl in March of 2008 when my friend brought it to a party we had.

I thought it was the greatest game in existence.

So I hyped getting it, but never did until Feb. in 2009.
Played it excessively for a year, then got bored and quit.
Unlike Roacherman, I don't hate it.

I remember going into Blockbuster one day wanting to rent some random N64 game and I saw SSB on the shelf. I remember a friend of mine calling it bad but it didn't have anything else I wanted so I just rented SSB. I started playing it and had NO IDEA WHAT ON EARTH I WAS DOING (I remember I picked Link and I couldn't recover.) It was the first fighting game I ever played. After a week I really liked it so I starting looking around pawn shops to buy a copy. About a month later I found it and bought it.

Being honest, I didn't play it that much. It was fun but other games were just better. Soon a friend came over that liked SSB and we started playing it together and he completely OBLITERATED me (with two lv9s on my team). It kinda made me mad so I started playing it a lot more to get better at it (sadly, I never played this person again).

I remember hearing about the GameCube coming out. Didn't care about it until I heard it had the next SSB game: Melee. I told my parents I would do anything I can to get one, and after a few months I finally got my Gamecube along with Melee. I played that thing all the time (along with other games). I (foolishly, lol) thought I was "competetive" at Melee, and I had "competetive" matches with my friend (at least we used stocks ). Mained Roy back then, was having a blast.

Heard about the Wii coming out. I REALLY wanted a Wii (ugh) because of the "new generation of gaming" and all that. Wasn't sure if I wanted to save enough money for one until I heard about Brawl (I got my Wii a while before Brawl came out since I was so hyped for it). I wanted to play as Pokemon Trainer and Lucario so bad. I remember counting the days on my calander until it finally came out. I felt so amazing going to get my reserved copy of Brawl. I started playing it and, even though the gravity change was strange, I loved it.

A week after Brawl came out (maybe longer, not sure), I started reading the Prima guide for Brawl (ODFHDAFHADFHA THAT THING FAILS SO BAD) in my local bookstore. I remember they said something about a website called Smashboards.com for good information. I eventually went there, and my mind kinda exploded. Melee tournaments? Wavedash? How is Fox good? It kinda freaked me out a bit, so i stopped going there for a while. I eventually came back and read a lot about competetive Brawl, and just gave in and made an account.

I wanted to be some kind of competetive player in Brawl (or Brawl WiFi), but that never happened. I made lots of friends here, and I liked talking to my friends more than brawling seriously.

This post turned out bigger than I meant it to be lol. Ohwell, feels good to have those memories come back.

I remember being sick the day I got the American release of Brawl (I live in Europe) lol. and I had to rehurse for a school play (I was i the 5th grade). So in 2008, I played a little Wi-Fi and a lot more offline with friends
Not long after that, my wi-fi broke, so in 2009 I could only play offline. My friends had already put down Brawl so I also quit brawl then. But in 2010, my wi-fi was restored and now I mostly play online.

i specifically avoided brawl discussion because i didn't want the hidden characters to be spoiled...

then i got it the day it came out. after playing it for a while i decided that olimar and g&w were the best characters in the game. i wasn't too far off! g&w was fourth on the first tier list, if any of you remember.

I had heard about it from some random sites I was browsing on and decided to trade in two shovelware games and buy it with my older bro. I had never played Melee before except for one time back in 2002. I kept playing, and a few of my friends got me into the game even more and I improved throughout 2008 and into early 2009. While they have since quit and moved on, I still play to this day.

I remember being hyped about Brawl's release, but I was worried that it would be terrible. All of the gameplay I saw leading up to the demo had been atrocious, and I did indeed really dislike the game when I first played it. After getting more accustomed to the physics and getting better acquainted with how ICs play, I did start to like it. I actively attended tourneys for it throughout 2008; I also played Melee since I saw no reason to quit that, although I didn't prioritize it. Around the end of 2008, I stopped playing Brawl because I disliked the direction the metagame was taking. Some guys convinced to me start playing again a few months later, and I once again performed decently well. I stopped playing again after Genesis, although this time because I simply had no drive to be good at the game whereas I still really wanted to progress at Melee.

I still don't have much against the game. There are lots of little issues that prevent me from enjoying it nowadays, but I still think it's a fine game in most respects.

I first got my copy at a Toys R Us. When I arrived there was a big line. The line however wasn't full of people wanting Brawl, but instead just the Wii itself. The Wii was still a hard item to find on store shelves at the time despite being released a year and a half earlier.

I was actually 35th in line to get in Toys R Us yet got the 1st copy of Brawl in the store. I played it for 6 hours that day at a friends house.

Dang I went to Dallas :(
Brawl was probably the first game I ever covered on updates and stuff up to the release, rather than just putting it in the back of my head until it came out.

I showed up at that gamestop at like 9 AM as they opened to get this game.

man I remember it like it was yesterday

I eagerly popped in Brawl into my friend's Wii and we played for a almost a whole 12 minutes

then we realized that it sucked and was a terrible uncompetitive game.

true story.

The thing for me was the adventure mode wasnt smash, it was something more generic and worse. In meele the events and hrc etc are all heavily based in the mechanics of the game. Since the adventure mode was the first thing I played I never really took the game seriously.

I'd been waiting for an online fighter to play but didn't have any of the next gen systems yet, so when Brawl was announced my wife immediately posed it as a "system seller" and so we bought the Wii and Brawl and the rest is history.
