I found a way to fortress hog 100% of the time... but I don't know if it's been found out yet.

I searched the boards to see if someone found it, but I couldn't find it so...

I might look like a fool, but I'll take that risk. If this is old news, just point me to the thread that has this. :ohwell:

Fortress Hogging Successfully

Overview: When you Fortress, you control the momentum of where it goes. The momentum of the Fortress made it impossible to grab the ledge because just sprawls Bowser past the ledge and doesn't let him grab it. But it was all about momentum.

How to do it...

First method: With your back facing the ledge, Fortress toward the ledge then RIGHT before you hit the ledge, press back toward the ledge. The shortened momentum of the Fortress SHOULD let you grab the ledge as long as you hold the direction the ledge is at. Common screw ups might be pressing back too early... which would then keep you on the stage, or pressing back to late... which will plummet yourself to doom.

So if Bowser's back is facing left... Press B+UP, move left, before you hit the edge press and hold right. Bowser SHOULD grab the ledge consistently as long as you slow down his momentum prior hitting the edge.

Second Method: Another trick is to be right on the edge with Bowser's back facing it (this can be achieved by rolling into the edge). Fortress then tap away from the ledge to fall off, then immediately tap and hold toward the ledge... and you should instantly grab the ledge.

You must do this instantly after doing a fortress, or delay the fortress for a bit. There's a small window of death inbetween falling off instantly and delaying the fortress. The reason for this is the abnormal grabbing frame during the falling Fortress animation.

The problems of Fortress Hogging:
One problem with Fortress hogging is the point of when Bowser grabs the ledge. It seems that Bowser won't grab the ledge until a certain frame during his falling Fortress animation. While you're fortress hogging, you might notice Bowser delaying the grab for the ledge.

Another problem with Fortress hogging is that you can't always do it facing away from the ledge. Bowser has a smaller box for grabbing the ledge behind him, so doing a fortress hog facing the edge would be risky.

Is this for Melee or Brawl? Because if it's for Brawl, it's pretty pointless as any character can edge-hog by simply running off the ledge and fast fall.

Nobody fast-falls to edge-hog, it's just falling. Since bowser has poor air "acceleration" you have to slow down his momentum before you dash off the edge. I once thought he couldn't after trying dashing off the edge with my other mains, but it turns out all you need is different timing.

You're wrong. Bowser (as well as everyone else) can edgehog by dashing off the edge and fast fall. There's no need to slow down. Try it out for yourself :)

(Of course, you need to return the control stick to neutral position as soon as you begin to fast fall. Otherwise you'll just pass the ledge and fall down).

I think you need to read and learn what fast-falling at a ledge would do.
Fast falling is pressing the control stick down when falling, right? If you pass the ledge while holding the control stick down, you just fall down and don't grab the ledge, right? Well, the key is to not hold the control stick down, just press it down once and release it (or manually return the stick to neutral position if it's really worn out and won't re-center by itself).

I've been doing it wrong for the past 3 months. I feel stupid. My other main all fall relatively fast so I didn't notice the difference (Kirby, Fox, Dedede...)

Just pointing out that it IS possible. Say if you were fortressing near the edge and your opponent guards it, you could fortress hog to avoid counter attack. It's a nice thing to know in situations like that.

Also, I would say fortress hogging is whole lot easier than instant-edgehog... even though an instant-edgehog would be more effective.

Very true. Also to avoid counter-attacks from fast-falled aerials at low %s

I need to work on my timing with this, because I usually fall off anyway.

I was playing with this the other day and got the same results: as long as you're facing the ledge and pressing toward it as you fall, you'll typically grab it.

There is a risk involved, especially with online lag when it could register late and you'll miss as a result.

Ummm....I can't picture how this is happening. Mind making a video just so I can see what this new discovery is. O_o

Because it just sounds like you pivot a Fortress and grab the ledge as it falls down which isn't hard or new.

You have a lot of trouble with picturing stuff without vids >_>

Sonic (and I think Falcon) have to quickly fastfall and then hold towards the stage to instant-edgehog. They run fast enough/carry enough momentum to miss the ledge by normal means x.x;

LMFAO I do.

I'm a visual person, so it just makes things much easier for me. XD
It looks like a regular Melee Fortress hog... if you wanted a visual for the actual controller... I don't think that will help much.

Just look up Melee Bowser videos to see what a Fortress Hog looks like.

If you're having trouble understanding, just think of it this way... you are pulling back the momentum of your fortress before you go off the edge... and by pulling back, I mean slowing down.

Fortressing full speed off the edge will always kill you. Slowing down before you go off the edge will let you stay close enough to grab it.

while fortress canceling (fortresshogging whatever you want to call it) is possible and fairly easy in brawl it's uses are minimal. the point of it in melee was to speed up your game - this slows you down.

bowser's ledge game used to be amazing - the ledge was a great place to be - now his ledge game isn't so great and you cant even move right away after grabbing it.
