You can't space the CG intentionally, I just happened to be at the perfect point for the spike at that moment. It's just a little further back from the ledge. And it DOES work if he has his second jump, because the spike arcs from above, allowing you to catch him if he jumps. Assuming he dodges by falling mad far away, he's screwed anyways.
