That gives me a genius idea though - have the announcer call Kamek's default costume Kamek, and all his alts just Magikoopa.

Honestly, BWD's and Shadow's designs are at least different enough to make them recognizable as their own people (Shadow especially, since he barely looks like Sonic to begin with).

This isn't even comparable. That's how lazy this is.

Man I miss Kammy. They had a perfectly good original Magikoopa design in the first two PM games and just decided to replace her with the generic Kamek for no reason other than branding.

I personally think Shadow is really good character design.

I mean, first and most obviously, you've got his darker color scheme to contrast Sonic's blue. Maybe that's lazy, I'll give you that. But you also have some red highlights along his spines, eyes and arms, which compliment the fur really well. Shadow also has red eyes to keep with this theme. The color of the hedgehog's mouth was also changed-if they really were lazy, they would've left Sonic's mouth as is, but no, they made it a more tan color to go with Shadow better. The raised quills in the back of his head symbolize great power-as the only other hedgehog with raised quills would be Super Sonic. So in that way, the quills represent a false super form, if you will. Shadow was also given some chest hair, which fits him much better than a weird creamy circle. Shadow's more advanced gloves and shoes symbolize his alien, manufactured nature. His shoes in particular are rocket skates that he uses, so his feet never have to touch the ground. This is genius, because Shadow only thinks of himself as even in power with, like, three people (Sonic, Silver, and Knuckles), and in his mind, everyone else is just below him. So it makes sense that he wouldn't want to touch the same ground they do. And his inhibitor rings may just seem like decorative detail, however they play a vital role in the coming Sonic media-they hold back his power, and keep him from going to a self-damaging limit. Makes sense-he is the Ultimate Life Form, after all, so all that power would not be pleasant.
Another really cool thing-his spines don't only represent his power. Remember how Gerald Robotnik was really interested in ancient echidnas? Well, he may have stumbled upon the famous portrait from Sonic 3 and Knuckles. And, he may have interpreted it as a prophecy, that he would create the Ultimate Life Form, not as a giant dinosaur thing, but a hedgehog with raised quills. Very cool attention to detail there, intentional or not.
