Nope. Never heard of 'em.

I just read the plot off of Wikipedia and-huh. I can't think of a single reason why this would be a Britain-exclusive thing. Seems like something that would fit right in with other fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood.

Is the Gruffalo a buffalo played by Mark Ruffalo?

Welcome to "Everyone but US Syndrome", in which if a work is not Popular in US, it seems way more obscure than it actually is. Saint Seiya,The Adventures of Tintin (Franco Belgian comics in general suffer from this actually) and SNK are all hit by this.

I’ve heard of all of those except Saint Seiya.

Wait... people in the US don't know Tintin????? have they also never heard of Asterix????

I mean i guess the Stephen Spielberg movie made him a little more popular there, and Asterix might as well not exist to them. The only Franco Belgian Comic characters that seem to be popular there are the Smurfs, and that's because of Hanna Barbera's Cartoon and the Films.
