The funniest part is that F-zero already dabbled with Battle Royale gameplay with the Death Race mode in X.

I'm moreso intrigued by how a battle royale would work in a racing game outright. Just sounds like it'd be a race with 99 players - Not that I'd complain, mind you, but I feel like it doesn't have a way to incorporate the "throw hazards in your opponents' way" idea seen in the other 99 games.

I think it's more like how some racing games have a mode where only the top half, then the top 25%, then the top 15%, etc of racers stay racing after each lap, and all behind them are eliminated.
The word "battle royale" is just kind of stigmatized in gaming spaces, so I guess that's why people don't like the F-Zero thing.
