Because some people just don't like the idea of non-video game characters being in the game regardless.

Including them would open the floodgates in the speculation scene to such a wider variety of options that there are people out there who fear it has too much potential to make speculation more toxic. Or at the very least more overwhelming.

Even without that, non-video game characters being playable in Smash just doesn't feel right to some people.

A lot of them would probably be licensing nightmares. Although, if that's true, then how did Sora get into Smash?

because at that point smash would no longer have a central focus and would potentially turn into a horrible mess and loose what makes it special
