if you at any time fully submerge under water, the grasshopper drowns and dies and you can't get the true ending (the grasshopper consistently offers emotional support but the whale cannot hear it)

I actually think that could be a neat concept without just being a joke if you had like evil grasshoppers and other bugs jump onto the whale and you had into engage in grasshopper combat to get them off. Kinda like David Hasselhoff in The Spongebob Movie.
It's literally just a game about a killer whale.
