I've only read one MYM moveset in full before but I still chip away at making my own sets from time to time. It's not required to be a super active part of the community, just jump in, give 'em what you have, and enjoy yourself! My first set (Shadow) was genuinely awful, but my second one (Morshu) ended up making top 50! Plus you teach yourself a lot of good writing skills - if it wasn't for MYM I would not have known what my writing style even was, nor would I have gained the perseverence in my creative projects to nail my auditions for a really good summer camp for the arts.

I still enjoy being in the community anyways even though almost every moveset I’ve written for them is definitely pretty bad.

I've found myself looking at MYM movesets throughout the years lately; On one hand, I do feel that I know how to make a cohesive, flowing moveset. On the other hand, the level of detail that these movesets go into is well beyond the scope of any moveset I've ever made - more than my Nexed movesets, more than my creation thread movesets, more than any moveset I've done for fun, etc.

Don't get me wrong, the fact that MYMs go into this much detail is great - there's a reason I've been reading them! It's just kinda overwhelming at first, and I've yet to find an approach which didn't lead to me getting burnt out or unsure of my process.

tl;dr: performance anxiety is one hell of a drug

I think a good rule of thumb when jogging down details for movesets is just to check off the essentials for each individual move (damage? kill % if applicable? special functions? combo potential?) and if you do all that then other stuff probably will come naturally, as long as you have a solid set of specials that are able to play around with the rest of the moveset in cool + unique ways.
