  • Hey PPMD, I have a few questions to ask you. The first question is how would you normally approach a character with Falco, because I feel as though I am not using my lasers enough, how would you use lasers for in specific situations?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i would approach by making them fear my laser and the actions that come before it. then i would do those preceding actions and make them fear the non-existent laser and just go get them since they're off-balance
Hey, PPMD! I'm a Sheik main who has been having difficulties with spacies lately, specifically with finding answers to their shine pressure and Falco's lasers spacing/approaches. When are good/safe times to nair out of shield with Sheik during their pressure? What are good ways for Sheik to limit Falco's laser spacing?
Thanks for taking the time to look at this.
I hope you have fun at Apex! I'll be cheering for you!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
nair oos if they aerial high and/or sometimes after they shine. if they dont double shine or dont instant aerial you can pretty much always nair oos that.

as for lasers, crouch under high ones, sh under low ones. use platform needles as well. powershielding is pretty good too.
Hey, I was wondering what your prefence on SHFFLing with falco is, do you ever use the stick or do you use x/y? :) Reason behind it is appreciated, thanks PP
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
I use X because it's easiest for my thumb to reach and I can stay on the same horizontal plane as the A button.
    Hey PP,
I just got 20XX to work with my Wii and I noticed something. When I L-Cancel normally on the ground I do it consistently, but when I do it on a character it is different, and I don't get the L-Cancel that often. I realized that there was hit lag when it came to doing the SHFFL. Is the hitlag different for each character or is the timing the same? Thanks!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
hitlag is the same for every character but ICs, which is greater if you hit both of them.
Hey PP , im curious on your take on PM characters, i main with Sheik and Mario and want to get better with IKE and OR Roy. thanks, and Are you going to Apex ?
    I
    iGP Zero
thanks man, I wanna see you in grand finals vs M2K, soo any tips? i only been to 2 tourneys
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i mean i think you would be better off sticking to one, maybe two characters. hard to give advice for all of them. practicing basics is best.
    I
    iGP Zero
okay thanks, your a LEGEND man
Hey PP, I have been playing for about 6 months and been to a few tournaments, and I want to get better. I just want to know how you go about making an efficient training program when you were starting out, since there is so many skills I can work on. Best of luck at Apex and awesome interview!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
just practice all of the basics a whole lot. individually. then start combining them.

    thanks a lot!
How are you able to know exactly where to DI on reaction to a move so quickly? Is there a way to practice reaction time without knowing what the opponent will do to you? Thanks!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
just practice getting hit at different percents at different places on stage. eventually you'll learn where you can and can't get out. it helps to set this up with a friend and then reset the situation often so you have a more full understanding.
    Hey PP,

Do you use Netplay sometimes? It would be cool to play against you to see how I am compared to you in skill (I suck).
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
ill use netplay in the coming months when i stream. right now i dont!
Hi PP, first of good luck at Apex, you are by far my favorite pro smasher. If I have class during one of your sets, I may need to watch that lol. I just wanted t o know if you have any match analysis videos of your sets with Falco. I am trying really hard to adjust to my opponent, instead of going into "Auto-falco mode" (Where I just do falco stuff without thinking).
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
    thanks a ton! =)

and no analyses yet, but after apex ill have lots of them!
Hey PP, I'm a new smasher who made the transition from brawl, but I've run into a problem. I'm in a very dry area for smash and only being 16 my parents don't approve of me playing smash at a competitive level. But I love smash and always have, I just can't get any high level players in my community, so I was wondering if you have any advice for me or if there is anyone in East Tennessee that could help me out.
    S
    SyndicateSniper
Well I've done both. University of Tennessee has them and the community is a fair size, but their tournaments are just huge college parties and for a 16 year old who isnt into that kind of stuff its hard to get used to it. And none of the guys at the tourneys i host have the same drive i do so there isnt much competition.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
ahh i see. you may have to talk to any of them who seem more motivated to work with you outside of that environment, or start something at high school to ensure the environment you want.

it could also be possible to find a venue and host your own events and then attract people with flyers etc so you could get new players who might want to play more the way you do too.
    S
    SyndicateSniper
Duly noted. I appreciate the advice PP, be sure to stack it up for the south at Apex!
PP quick question. Did you bother to learn how to isai drop on platforms? And if so what tutorial did you use?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i did learn it but i mostly did with someone else teaching me haha. no idea if theres a tutorial
    Bebop123
    Bebop123
Do you use it alot in your gameplay? It seems you waveland then drop down after more often from the videos I've seen of you.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
yeah i use it in varying amounts. i think ill use it more at apex but we'll have to see how it goes haha. knowing all ways to use platforms is key.
PP question how would I stop my DI Habit. Ex. If I need to DI upwards to the right I would hold the stick upwards to the left, and would Scar Jump nair cover Fox or Falcos Up B Sweet Spot?
    Yo PPMD,

How good is laser>dash sh shine in Falco dittos?

Also I have a problem concerning reads. I can easily predict my opponent's movement and recovery and other little things in their play, but when it comes to actually making the read, I can never get myself to do it. How can I overcome this mental barrier? Its been messing with a lot of my Falco (well, both spacies in general) play.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
that technique is okay if you are pretty close to them and think they wont shield/will jump oos.

if you can predict what they will do, then why can't you predict you will hit them? my guess is it's something about your own moves. how quickly they come out or how far you are spaced. i suggest moving in slightly when you see an opening or being closer when you feel that "get them" impulse and see how that pans out.
    victinivcreate1
    victinivcreate1
I'm going to try that as soon as I play some Melee/PM tomorrow. Thanks man!

    Oh yeah win Apex plz.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
ill see what i can do!
Waiting for my lord and savior PP to return.. :( I heard you were going to start doing big tournies again when Apex rolls around, is this true? :)
Hey PP! first off congrats on 3rd for the MIOM rankings. Second, any tips for falco dittos. I feel that I do not know the match up as well compared to the other characters and struggle against other falco mains
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
Thanks! Falco dittos you have to use platforms or be okay with having your laser out less than in other matchups since one guy has all of the control and it can be lost fastest in this matchup.
Yo PP! You have a fan from the UK :) I'm an up and coming Falco inspired by you and Mango and wondered if you could answer me this question: is there any point using Shine-> Rising Nair as Falco as opposed to Shine -> Rising Bair/Dair (apart from the obvious swag factor)?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
You mean when they are airborne? Not for any reason I am aware of.
Hello Dr PeePee, I just wanted to let you know, you're my favorite melee player out there, and you've inspired me to think about strategy rather than just relying on flashy tech skill. I hope you have a merry Christmas!
PPMD, I was wondering what options Falcon has against lasers? Watching your set vs Hax at EVO 2013, it seems that as a defensive option, wd oos backwards seemed to mess up your spacing, and allow retreats onto the side platforms . Offensively, he would instant dj nair over top and punish you for trying to laser. Any other tips for falcon's neutral game in the matchup?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
take the high road as much as possible imo. platforms/FHs/DJs will do you good. but you can also take lasers directly and dash/side B/SH Nair and probably take stage or dodge falco's attacks and force him to reconsider his laser game as well. put all that together and you'll be in good shape!
Just out of curiosity how long/often do you normally tech train? Also when you were starting out how did you figure out what to work on first? Do you make a training plan or just do what you feel like?

Also hope you are ranked higher than M2K this year!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i train about every day, 30-60 minutes right now but ill be picking that up more soon i think. i figured out beginning stuff from smashboards and just doing basics and videos. that stuff has carried me super far tbh.

    and thanks!
Talent is overrated, it doesn't take you very far... Hard work is only good when done correctly. Deliberate, specific, and directed practice is what turns the average person into one of the best.

Well that's what my piano teacher told me yesterday lol

What is your stance on the whole talent thing? Are the top spots reserved for a select few? Or can anyone make it?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
it's an extremely hard question. talent is completely a nonsensical notion that doesn't mean anything though.

if i had to answer simply, I would say that you need to have a supporting environment, start as young as possible on whatever you want to do, and, of course, work as hard as you absolutely can but work as smart as you absolutely can as well. it's not easy ever but it can be done.
    PandaPanda Senketsu
    PandaPanda Senketsu
Excellent answer. Scientific evidence just doesn't support the notion of talent, there are many many factors that affect a person's performance. Thank you answering <3
Hey PP any tips for shines OOS? I cant seem to do it fast enough where I do not leave the ground.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
you just gotta practice doing it a bit faster! use 20XX hack pack or a friend to practice the timing some and you'll get it.
Go to ohio pls lol I wanna play you soooo bad dude i got to play against hbox mango and armada
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
haha i hope to go there sometime!

    Zekk
whats holding you back right now traviling stess?
I am a shiek/marth main and u know you have good experience with marth... Do you have any good tips for either character?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
Sheik: Space Fair well and learn good mixups out of it like dash back/boost grab/dash attack

Marth: Become good at landing grabs. Don't swing too much. Throw them in the air and kill them.

Both: Be able to reaction throw tech chase when needed it's good.

appreciate it. Such a humble smash god lmao
Hey PP could you think about coming to the Mathews Smashers tourney sometime? We'd love to see you there. Great payout and competition.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
yeah im interested i hope to come sometime

Alright man glad to hear it.
Hey PPMD, thanks for the help in the past, I was just wondering how to jump out of shine quicker with falco? Do you use "y", "x", or the control stick for it? I can't seem to jump out of my shines in mid air fast enough to get a bair or dair.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
I use X but you can get the same speed with all of them. If you want to ensure a hit, try hitting the opponent higher on their body(so they can fly into your aerial as you DJ sort of)
Hey PPMD! i had to write a letter to a famous person and i chose you. I had no idea we were actually sending them out and now i don't have a mailing address. If you could pm me that would really help a lot. Thanks!
Went to the big house 4 won one match lost the rest in my pool took one more to game 3 thanks to a risky rest playing as jiggly puff but lost but was told my ganondorf (my main) was promising but what I saw from falco mains made me really interested in falco so I'm wondering do you have any tips?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
get your lasers and wavedashes and SHFFLs down it'll help a whole lot. if you can shine grab that's pretty good too.
    Airfall
    Airfall
    Okay, thanks PPMD.
Is their anyway I can learn fundementals for both Spacies all I can really do is practice tech skill.

How do you practice reaction time? say I'm playing a Falcon and he approaches with stomp how would I prepare to DI the right way because this mess me up and get too much percentage because of this.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
practice getting stomped and what different DIs do at different percents. then you'll be able to react quicker when it happens in a match
    Pr0fessor Flash
    Pr0fessor Flash
I have a habit on DIing . Ex. If I need to DI upwards on the right side I would put the Control Stick Upward on the left side so any Advice to stop this Habit?
Hey PPMD! Thanks for all the feedback in the past. I was wondering how do you use your movement when your opponent has projectiles?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
Can't really answer such a broad question well, but I like moving closer to them so they can't use projectiles without possibly getting hit for using them.
    Hey PP,

Just a random question, how much percent should I try to tack on in my opening strings/combos?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
Getting at least 40% is usually pretty good because then a lot of moves in neutral become more useful. However, doing as much as possible is usually best!
    Hey Kevin,
I've been following smash for a little under a year now and I've got to say you're my absolute favorite player!
I've actually have been playing smash for only a month or so and luckily I play in a area where lots of good smash players frequent. The people I play against say I have a hard time with spacing so I was wondering if you have any tips on how to understand this concept as a new player.
    Charmed
    Charmed
Also it seems that the time it takes to L-cancel / pop a shine differs when you hit a enemy and when you just do it in air.
I've looked at the past questions you've answered and it's helped me a lot, but can you spare any advice on how to improve your mental game as a new player? Thanks a ton and I hop you're feeling better!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfBuAo_Bfvw for spacing tips! reading is related videos and will also help a lot. delay your shine input a bit until you can get it to come out then speed up. that's a good way to practice in general.

mental stuff is hard but read "inner game of tennis" for now. I'll put out more stuff on it later since it's a hard subject to tackle shortly =p

Thank you so much and I hope to see you do well at Apex!
