I found out about the competitive scene of Smash as a whole about a year and a half ago. The first ever match I watched was game 2 of SilentSpectre vs Wobbles at Mango Juice. I watched a few other matches involving SilentSpectre, and I said to myself "I want to get to that level of Smash!" So for over a year, I began to learn advanced techniques like Wave Dashing, L-Cancelling, Dash Dancing, Wave Landing, and Directional Influence. I felt like a pro smasher when I was performing these techniques, and I wanted to face actual people since the AI in Melee was not very smart.
I went to my after prom and I brought my Wii, since I already knew there was going to be a set up, but with casual games that no one would touch. So, I commandeered the station, popped in Melee and played it with other students at my school. I beat them pretty badly, until I met someone who actually was better than me. He used Falco and Marth and had an actual combo game unlike me and he tore me apart. I challenged him to a Falcon ditto, which I almost won. I had two stocks more than him when I got him to 137% damage, he then took my 3rd stock. I had one stock left, I was like "This'll be easy." Next thing I know he gimps me, and took the game. We then kept playing and I was able to beat him in two games when he was using Link and Pikachu. So far, that has been my only contact with a real competitive Melee Smasher.
I am a pretty lame guy. I actually made my own imaginary competitive scene, with fake players and aliases, and also given mains all across the roster. I've been doing this for maybe a year (I don't know) and it's probably one of the lamest things I've done but I guess it allowed me to try all the characters in Melee and see how they worked, but then again I was only able to pick up Marth as a second main.
I am on the autistic spectrum, having Asperger's Syndrome, which may have triggered my big interest in competitive Melee to the point of near obsession. I have not discovered anything new for the metagame of Smash, and most likely never will but who knows... nah I probably wont discover anything new.
