Okay, so that actually means you'll probably be fine with the Vita's biggest hurdles; it's form factor. Seriously, I don't know how people play on this thing without a dedicated grip.
As a PSP replacement it's great. A lot of the time I've put into this game has basically be playing a bunch of the PSP games I never could, like Jeanne D'Arc, Orge Tactics, FATE/Extra, etc.
After 3 or so years with a Vita, I'd say that these are solid keepers:
- P4G
- Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited
- Grand Kingdom
Vanillaware games are all solid bets, though I'd probably rank
Dragon's Crown and
Odin Sphere over
Muramasa.
After that it get's...murky, and why I asked what other systems you own. A lot of the Vita's library, even the weeb**** has been ported over to something else, whether that be PS4, PC, or even the Switch. Getting on now has the added complication of having to justify not that you want to play "this or that game" but why you want to play "this or that game specifically on this system."
For instance, the defacto Vita game for years was
Gravity Rush...which you can now play a remaster of on PS4, plus the sequel. It was actually really disheartening seeing how much of a gut punch it felt to the Vita community when the sequel to a game that was basically synonymous with the Vita itself didn't get a handheld release.
-The top VN choice for the system would definitely go to the Ace-Attorney-Tiered-Popular
Danganronpa franchise...only you can get those on steam now.
Steins;Gate is on the Vita, but it's also on Steam now too. It does have the
Zero Escape trilogy (999, Virtue's Last Reward, and Dilemma) all on one system though, which the 3DS can't technically claim. There are other good VNs (
Utawarerumono, for one), those are just the most popular stateside imo. Like, I think
Muv-Luv is coming too, but that's definitely going to PC. That said, for a handheld VN machine, the Vita is probably the best I can think of.
Fate/Extella is on Vita, but the lack of button joysticks makes it a slog to play on the Vita and it's just a much better deal on the Switch.
Dragon Quest Builders is likewise coming/ already came out on the Switch.
The top weebtrash on the system would be the
Neptunia Re;Birth games and it's legion of spinoffs...only those are also on steam now, and I think I heard something about them remaking them a 3rd time, and the
Atelier series...which might be coming to Switch now.
The are the Monster Hunter clones that have been trying to fill the void ever since MH went to the 3DS like
God Eater and such, but again, also on PS4.
The top JRPGs that come to mind immediately would probably include the
FFX remake and definitely the
Trails Of Cold Steel trilogy. The Ys series I know has a really sizable following on Vita, but I've never played a game in that series.
Oreshika would get an honorable mention as a game I kept hearing about, but like with Ys I never played it.
Don't bother with a racing game outside of
Wipeout.
DW-like games are somewhat a dime a dozen, and Senran Kagura's VS spin-off series has got a pretty tight hold as the system's niche champ in that regard, if you want it portable.
And there are like a billion Weeb dungeon RPGs then I'm willing to count, but I think the "starting point" for those would probably be with Atlus published games like
Dungeon Travelers 2-2. I will mention Shiren the Wanderer as just a good not-really-weeb dungeon RPG, it's a remastered DS game and is just really nice.
edit: I guess I'd be interested in fighting games as well.
It's a weird system for fighting games, and I doubt any of them are particularly active tbh.
- Vita's got a niche BlazBlue following because it would always get an upgraded handheld port of the console game,
- The original Injustice is pretty good on it, the SF alpha games are there
- MvC3 was really fun, active, and an all around great choice for what the Vita can accomplish, but that's probably changed since it finally came out for PC. I at least haven't gone back to playing it on Vita.
- Skullgirls I believe is well received, just has very long loading times.
