Examples:
"Emily is such a b****, she was so horrible to Hannah. Jess obviously feels remorse and Mike is awesome so w/e that they were both more involved than Em." << Not to mention it's obvious she was just as remorseful as Jess.
"Emily is such a b****, she sounds like a total b**** in the Jess/Em fight I'm gonna kill her as soon as possible." << But suddenly Jess gets a pass even though she fought back with equal vigor. Not to mention the psychological issues involved with Emily's character (Suggested very clearly by Dr. Hill if you pick Emily as your least favorite. "Sometimes a lack of confidence manifests itself as overconfidence.") combined with seeing her ex mooching her bff.
"Emily is such a b****, she's so mean to Matt, he needs to dump her NOW." << Okay yeah, some of her possible dialogue with him is pretty rude. A lot of people start off by being untrusting as Matt with Emily, however. He's her boyfriend, and you can come off as really unsupportive, which causes her to be upset with Matt.
"Emily is such a b****, she slapped Ashley down hard." (See: Emily is bitten, but Mike does not shoot her, and Askley tells the truth about bites later. It's actually a pretty common outcome if the player doesn't unconditionally despise Emily.) This whole scene is a mess I won't get into. Both Em and Ash are in the wrong. Really though the game is playing off of horror tropes instead of logic, so ofc Ash gets over panicky, Em hits her even though people SHOULD be level-headed when it comes to KILLING someone, and they shouldn't jeopardize their group's friendship by hitting each other. I still think Ash was worse in this scene than Em.
Emily really suffers from "Missing dialogue and thoughts." A lot of the time she could be as equally nice/useful as the others, but the game purely portrays her dark side, with giving characters like Mike/Jess more sympathy by giving them scenes where you can like them sooner. Ex: Jess admits her insecurity and seems sweeter on screen, Mike gets a ton of screen-time during interesting action and takes charge and can survive well. Meanwhile they make the chapter piece where Em seems unb****y A PREORDER ONLY ADD-ON. Literally they make the decent Emily cuts only available for preorder.
She's also pretty good on her own. In chapter 7-8 she manages to maneuver through the mines not dying (Unless you die later vs wendigo.) not to mention she can ESCAPE a wendigo armed with nothing but flares. She's pretty resourceful in that chase, on her own doing things like releasing a barrage of boulders to block the wendigo, creating a fire to hold the wendigo back, turning on a conveyor belt/elevators, and even sharp shoot the wendigo with a flare gun to avoid being bitten entirely. When she isn't bitten, in the safe-room cutscene she also seems like more reliable of a character with no Ashley panic leading to Mike pointing a gun at her.
Also, if Ashley and Chris have died before Sam and co. reach that rock wall the splits them up in ep9-10, Emily actually suggests they stick together (SMORT) while SAM seems willing to leave Em behind to get to Mike.
I will be clear, I still think she is a flawed character that can be pretty mean in the game. (Her actress even admits she is b****y.) It's true, she is b****y, but people are holding her to a double standard sometimes.
It's also a shame she and Chris kind of get sidelined in 9-10 if Ashley is alive the whole time. I like to imagine that Emily is just so overwhelmed from the gunpoint situation to speak for a while while the go look for Mike.
Apparently a lot of tides are turned for Emily though either when: she survives her ba wendigo chase, or she tells Ashley to understand the palm of her hand.
