X (or Y) for jump.

Something that I've noticed is that people are turning off "tap up to jump."

Instead, people talk about pushing the "Jump button."

What are the benefits of pressing X (or Y) for jumping?

Some things I could think of:

Up+B on the ground

Controlled jumping on chars with multiple jumps

(Basically, more control over jumping and moves.)

Now, something else:

Short hops.

Can you do them with a button press?

If so, is it a tap as opposed to a full depress?

Just wondering. Thanks in advance, guys.

Typically, tapping a button to jump lets you do things with the analog stick while your jumping. For example, a short hopped down aerial comes out much faster with a button push. Basically, you're right. Using the button gives you more control.

And yes, you can short hop with a button press. The key determinant is how long you push the button for.

And without wavedash the only advantage up had for jump is erased.

That makes sense.

Thanks dudes (unless you're girls).

EDIT: ok, that's kinda weird.

in training mode, the tap up for jump still seems to be on.

does that happen for other people?

EDIT: Maybe I need to set the char to my profile first....

I used the jump buttons in Melee, so it didn't take any getting used to.

I can now do my up tilts without any effort, which is nice.

I used to use the analog stick to jump... until I played on Jigglypuff's training level in Melee. Try the last part using the analog stick, and then try it again using the y or x button. Going up and sideways at the same time using the analog stick really slows down your jumping, because you're losing horizontal distance by not having your stick at 0 or 180 degrees. With the x or y buttons you needn't worry about that, because you can use your analog stick to only have to worry about horizontal movements, not both horizontal and vertical movement.
