As the title says, it is a question I have been thinking about ever since I heard that there was a fourth smash coming. Being more of a fan of Melee than Brawl, I can't help but feel the next smash won't live up to what even Brawl had. Now I'm not saying it's definite, and I'm still hyped for another smash coming out, but I feel that the series had been slowly decreasing in how good the game play is. Maybe because there's a new team now working on it, maybe we'll get something different, for better or worse. Also getting back to the hype, I feel like it's not as good as how it was for Brawl. I feel like it's because with Melee, everyone was so excited that brawl would have have the same features plus more. But because they had added tripping and the inability to do certain moves (L-Canceling for example) It just didn't feel like it was as good. So now with a new smash coming out, I feel the hype decreases due to the fact that they may be taking less stuff from the game that made it good for competing. This is just all opinion however, many may think differently and I understand that. Maybe you have more fun without a competing kind of atmosphere, and that's fine. I respect everyone elses opinion, and I'd like to here what your thoughts are

(By the way, sorry if there was already a thread about this already, if there is I didn't notice, sorry D: )

They might take a page out of PM's book. Given that Pm lacks the publicity that a retail release get and it's mad successful anyway, they might not go out of their way to screw the competitive community this time.

Personally I think that the only way it's really going to truly suck is if they release it too earlier, or if it's a Melee or Brawl clone. If it is it's own game and comes out a year or two from now then I think it'll be good.

The world could use more melee clones..... Actually let me just clear something up. If I buy smash 4 its just melee, I of course would be angry that I just pissed away 60 bones on a game that's been out for ten years. What's wanted is a game that better executes melee's principles. Free flowing movement and being easy to play but hard to master. What we don't want is sakurai undercutting the competitive scene so casual wiitards don't have to feel insecure about not being good at a game that they even don't care to practice.

I feel like since they're putting more work into gameplay than anything this time around, this could, if managed well, be the best smash bros. yet. However, I'm not worried about release dates. I seriously doubt they would try to shove the game out, especially since they're already re-using and modifying resources and the like that could end up causing the game to not need another year in development.

And really, it makes me sad that from what I've seen vocalized in a number of places, the popular opinion is that SSB4 has to either be 'Melee 2' or 'Brawl 2' or '64 2' or whatever. It's like nobody can even be satisfied with a unique experience or something. <_<

As long as it retains Smash's movement. And it's unprecedented freeform combo system I'm happy. I want another fighter where I can do just about anything I want to, at any time, use any move to combo at any time. I do not want another traditional 2D fighter, at all, AT ALL. Also I'm fairly sure Sakurai and every game developer claims they are hard at work on improving gameplay for every sequel ever lol.

Not melee2.0. Just want a game that excels at everything melee did by giving the player absolute control. At least people who claim to want melee 2.0 can describe what they after instead of believing that smash 4 will be good because of a bigger roster or some such arbitrary reason. Should they experiment with different gameplay tweaks? Absolutely, but I know I'm more interested in how good a facet gameplay is over how new it is.

As long as its better than Brawl its ok.... (thats all i can say..)

I dont expect it to be better than Melee.

but ofc everyone gets hyped because like all sequals it has the potential to be way better than melee or best installment..

So i understand the hope/hype.

brawl didnt suck its just that the people who played melee too much couldnt get the hang off the differences.

Back when brawl was new the two games weren't really that different. Remember brawl was in its infancy so a lot of the character specific ats had not been discovered yet so I'd expect all the melee vets probably did reasonably well. And it's not like brawl and melee are as different as like soul caliber and Starcraft or some ****. Some skill must have transferred. They were probably pretty good if you were to rate them by level of the metagame at that time, they just weren't enjoying themselves.

If there's anything from Melee we really need, it's the increase of speed. It keeps things interesting.

I totally agreed, I hope they don't, and if we're going to get a bigger roster more stages and crap like that they're gonna need some more time.

I know man, it's ********.

Well personally I feel that each game in the series is equal in terms of how good it is, so I think that will be the case for SSB4. As long as it feels like an entirely new experience it will be good.

It will be what it will be. It shouldn't be a 2.0 but, rather, a unique experience set apart from its predecessors.

I highly suspect it will be at least better than Brawl. Mostly due to the incredible amount of negative outcry they must have received over the butchering they did towards the Melee-Brawl transition. **** was literally worse than the Red Wedding. Can you hear that?...sounds like The Rains of Castamere.

This so much. If it tried to copy a previous game it would never be better than its predecessors, because it isn't innovative or unique.

So far it looks very promising I might add, we'll see how it is to play. No way it'll be bad though, no Smash Bros game has been bad to date.
