So with this tournament coming up at E3, that means the game will be publicly visible to everyone. So, do you think that nintendo would have already announced the entire roster by then since they are letting the public play it or do you think Nintendo is only allowing a select roster to be seen.

I don't think so. Chances are, we'll still be in the dark until the 3DS version is available to the public.

I'd be surprised if the demo even has all the currently revealed characters, but I'm quite sure we won't be seeing the full foster before E3 and its tournament.

They're saving a bomshell reveal for E3, so everyone will ignore Sony and Microsoft's presentations.

I'm pretty sure that not every character we've seen will be ready for the demo they have planned for E3, though I also think that they might have at least one character they reveal at E3 playable in the demo. I think we'll at least know what the starting roster will be before the 3DS version comes out.

Considering that unlockables aren't near the guarantee that people think is for this game, I wouldn't be too surprised.

I actually wouldn't mind it either.

This as well. Why are you guys so against it? Two months of awkwardness? You know, we had two months of awkwardness after Diddy's reveal before the Nintendo Direct. It's not that big of a deal, and there's still a good chunk of info that can be spread out in-between then.

We will most definitely know the starting roster by the invitational; but I am sure we will still have secret characters to discover upon release.

how are you people sure of this

and please don't say tradition
I expect 10 newcomers at the very least, we already have 6. So at E3, where I only expect 2 or 3 newcomers, that leaves another 2 to 3. So I am certain as it correlates to what I have been speculating for months. There are 12-15 veterans that have yet to be revealed, we don't have time to reveal all 12-15 of them, as such, some will be secret characters in my opinion. Revealing the ENTIRE roster at the tournament would be counter-intuitive to whatever they actually reveal, there would be no point if everything is revealed at the tournament, if that makes sense.

Why would there be no point? There's definitely time to reveal all of them - Just not specific attention on each of them. This happened at E3, actually - We got about 13 characters.

It'd actually increase hype levels by revealing it all before the game's release. Why keep your best A-Cards as unknown until the game comes out? The roster will leak anyways. Might as well board the hype train. There's no confirmation that we'll have secret characters again, especially if they were put in, you'd have to unlock them in both versions.

People follow tradition way too much.

Unless the roster is absolutely pathetic, I doubt it. Now the entire starting roster, on the other hand, is a distinct possibility.

I would much rather have a sense of wonderment and excitement of the unknown than going into the game knowing everything.

Everyone thought Brawl was going to be great until we found out we knew everything before even playing.

No, the reason Brawl failed was other reasons, not the element of surprise.

Also everything will be revealed before the Wii U version anyways.

But that's because Brawl was released earlier in Japan before coming west. Since ssb4 (I assume) is going to have a global release date, there will probably be a lot more unknowns to everyone.

There's more to know than who's in the game. By the way things like this are said, I wonder how many of you actually play the games for the fact that they're games.

We didn't find about random tripping until we got the game.

I know. But we literally knew everything; the Dojo and the Japanese spoiled it all for us.
That's naturally going to happen wen games like this are normally released in Japan first.

This game isn't going to magically become the exception.

Amelia won't let me say
I certainly hope they don't. In fact, the amount of characters we know on the roster now is already stretching the edge my limits. A big part of why Smash is so entertaining to me isn't the competitive side of it, but the massive amounts of content, collectibles, and in particularly, unlockables. It leaves a sense of wonder and surprise about which what you don't know-- the whos and whats left blank for you fill them in. That's always been more fun than the competitive or social part of the game anyway, at least for me. When you experience a game for the first time, that's when it's at it's peak of excitement, I would hate to lose that months before the game is even released.

If all the characters are leaked ahead of time... I'm not sure how I would react. I don't want to believe I'd be so dramatic as to boycott it's release, however I can't see myself enjoying it nearly as much if that were to be the case. Telling who the characters are ahead of time removes the most valuable unknowns and crushes any sense of fulfillment, accomplishment, and surprise. And I suspect Sakurai aware of this-- after all, there were secrets on the Dojo website that were optional to see while looking up information on the game, I doubt he'll tell us everything about the game beforehand.

tl;dr version: I would expect a few more characters, perhaps 5, to be presented at E3. Leave another group, 10-20 depending on the widely variable roster predictions, to be complete unknowns until the game is released.

They wouldn't just show us every character, at least until very close to release. Like a week or two in advance. That's if there's no hidden characters.

However, the starting roster + Mega Man might be available at the tournament+demos, so there's that. I also wouldn't be surprised if the full roster gets legitimately leaked right before or right after E3.

If they're going through all that trouble to bring fine players together for a public tournament, it would be a missed opportunity not to have every character available to them. It's possible that the lid will be blown off the roster by then.

The thing is the tourney is much an advertisement as it is a competition. Nintendo might favor using a specific Demo with only the current Roster + the E3 surprises to keep some fighters hush-hush for the hype.

We are probably getting a sneak peak at the starting roster, while the secret challengers could be revealed soon after. After all the 3DS game is supposed to come out in the summer, unless Nintendo delays the game for months, looking at you Brawl

I could see it happening like what they did with the mk8 direct, although it is very unlikely.
