Will Project:M's engine ever be 100% Melee or so close that it's unnoticeable?

I was discussing the future of Project:M with my friends and this question dawned upon me. I understand how tedious and difficult it is to convert Brawl's engine into the engine we all know and love. Project:M's engine is very close to Melee, but will it ever be exactly like Melee or so close that it's negligible? Is there a certain programming hurdle that is just impossible to conquer?

Remember, this game isn't trying to be a clone of melee. Upon saying that I expect it will be similar but not exactly the same.

well it is called Project Melee. So the goal is to take melee and improve upon it.

Obviously the intentional changes (inclusion of Brawl advanced techs) will stay, but personally I hope they get the fundamental stuff as close to Melee as possible. "We almost ported Melee physics but left in some momentum disparities and a couple of 1-frame delays" just wouldn't be a great place to leave it.

I always get upset when I see that mentioned for Project M. I understand why people think that, but it makes me upset. I think I also get upset because there IS a Project Melee, but it's a texture hacking thing for Melee, and not Project M. haha

I sure hope so because Melee's gameplay feels noticably better, but P:M's character diversity is pretty exciting.
Nailed how I feel. Melee engine feels more solid still but the new match ups and characters are refreshing.

There are intricacies of Melee's engine that are vastly superior, as well as elements that were introduced into PM or from Brawl that are noticeably better. Imo it shouldn't be a bcuz melee, and more of this is a better element overall.

The 3 big differences right now are analog shield depth, momentum physics delay, and ledge jumping.

I wouldn't call finding/inventing fixes for any of these "Impossible programming hurdles". Considering what's been done in 5 years of Brawl hacking it's just a matter of time and man/coderpower.

Could be tomorrow. Could be last week. Could be 2020. WHO KNOWS

It does not stand for anything. It is simply an M.
Let's stop pretending that the "M" hasn't been screaming the word Melee since the beginning of this game.

I don't really get upset. I didn't know how else to put it. Haha. I can see the confusion too.
Project M's YouTube account doesn't help though..."ProjectMelee".

Guess it was called Project Melee at one point. Lol

Nope.

Necessity. ProjectM was taken on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. Our website isn't "projectmeleegame.com" now, is it?
THAT'S why.

and ledge jumping.
Ledge jumping is one of the things they are trying to fix? Are you talking about how characters can act more quickly out of a ledge jump compared to Melee(Like perform an aerial)? If so, I don't want that to be "fixed". It feels so much better in PM. Correct me if I am misunderstanding you.

yeah I am very curious about this too. Ledgehopping was probably the only advanced technique I could do back when I played melee, but I never noticed anything different once I picked up smash again for the mods.

Ledge grabbing though I think is still an issue, whereby some if not all the cast can grab the ledge despite being very far from it (Mario in particular), and while I recall the team fixing the grabbing range for one dimension, I thought the other was still elusive (vertical and horizontal ledge grabbing range that is).

Dying because the enemy's rear is inbetween you and ledge is incredibly silly. But P:M doesn't have the ridiculous ledge occupancy times that melee does.

I mean ledge jumping as in pressing jump directly from the ledge. I don't think ledge hopping is any different from Melee (Dropping from the ledge and quickly double jumping to an aerial/waveland), but ledge jumping is very different in that in PM, you can act out of it way earlier.

I think there were some hard coded or at least difficult data concerning backwards ledge grabbing that has still not been fixed yet.

So I am not the only one who swears that Mario grabs the ledge from further than other characters. I really hope they fix that. Recoverys are buffed across the board already. No need for ledgesnaps to be so strong.

This is a troll thread, anyone posting anything but silly puns is doing it wrong.

It's obvious the P:M dev team is doing anything in their power to emulate melee as much as possible and maintain the meta that has been developed all these years pitch perfect. There's no reason to deviate from this course since melee is the best game ever and the smallest amount of change is unacceptable, why do you think this game is still in it's beta stage? (because it's not entirely melee yet) and the whole smash community is just waiting to jump into it when it's a frame for frame copy, and you've been living under solid stone if you didn't know that the entire purpose of the clone engine is to remove brawl newcomers and bring back all the characters left out. In fact they were even considering tuning down graphics to game cube level so new players won't get confused from all those flashy colours. Also tweak the menu so it's basically the same as melee, it's melee how melee melee can be.

It seems like to me (a non-melee player) that the PMBR could probably make PM play exactly like Melee. However, I think PMBR shouldn't take that approach. PM is not Melee and shouldn't play exactly like Melee. If anything it should play better than Melee. I realize many have been playing Melee since launch and are used to the feel of that game, but the game was not perfect and improvements could be made in some way or another.

L-canceling is a stupid but people (including myself) think it's kind of neat for some reason, so it's not going away. Just wait for Air Dash Online for that big deviation in formula.

All I can really want from Melee at this point is the original Short Hop mechanics. They made the game feel a great deal more comforting for those of us that use the Analog pad for Jumping. And I suppose light shielding would be great, but I'm not sure how one would go about accomplishing that. Anything I'm missing that's good?

Tech rolls carrying momentum is a big one and I think there's some details related to jumping that still need work (which have the biggest effect on the game).

Everything dealing with DI is almost effectively 1:1 which is really nice.

Yeah, "Sticky Rolls" are a kicker. Jumps are the most annoying thing at this point, and something I wish could be fixed quick, although I suppose it's not in the cards any time soon from what I've heard about Brawl coding.

With turbo mode just around the corner, the M might as well stand for Marvel.

Then why is the twitter account @ProjectMelee and YouTube account the same? It could have been SSBPM, ProjectM, ProjectMGame, or anything related to that, but ProjectMelee was chosen.
I actually can't tell if trolling, but I am interested

You're not wrong. It really never should have been called ProjectMelee at any point, and although SSBPM wouldn't be ideal since it just looks like a jumble of letters and lacks the "snappiness" of Project M(elee), ProjectMGame would have been fine. I guess they just didn't think of it at the time? Too late to change it now, I guess.

Dudes saying how PM engine shouldn't be anymore like Melee because it's so much better and advanced are going to be the same dudes jlzzing over the PM blogpost where momentum lag and tech rolls are fixed.
