First of all if a similar thread already exists or if you simply think that this doesn't deserve an own thread please notify me.

Yesterday ZeRo showed us again why he's the best player on this planet , his adaptationskills and his
matchup-knowledge really are above everyone's level. But ZeRo often gets critizised for his lack amount of teckskill shown since the only real tech he uses constantly is B-Reverse slidecancelling hihttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DXTNEPqcVos . But what that simply means is that playing out of your mind is more important than doing C-Bounces https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnPuibqUIuA or needle fidgets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99vpSSd68U4
( shoutouts to smashboardsuser _Tree. His videos are A M A Z I N G and i would definitly recommend checking them out ) . Well what i wanted to say with that is that instead of learning tech first you should try to learn to play out of your mind. Most likely you at first don't really know how, but i found out some simple tricks to achieve one of the most important cognitive skills in competitve gaming. First of all you need to stop playing autopilot , you might have heard that from ZeRo or other competitive players but you dont really know how to stop playing auto pilot? Well first thing to note is that almost EVERYBODY once had a phase where he autopiloted. this simply comes from playing to much with bad players (namely For Glory) because For Glory players usually dont know how to adapt and will let you play your pattern till you win , this results into your brain unconsciously making an database where it decides which playstyle leads to the most wins and ultimately only uses this playstyle , the autopilot is born. Now you know how an Autopilot is born , but how do you avoid that? simply stopping playing For Glory isn't enough , herefore you need to learn to optimally consider the options of your opponent. But then we got another problem : how do i learn to consider the options? Its simple , smash is an rock paper scissor game : attack beats grab , grab/commandgrab beats shield and shield beats attack. For example : if your shielding you need to consider the option that your opponent can grab you so you need to read if hes gonna attack you or grab you , try to remember a similar moment where you where shielding and your opponent had the option to grab you , and try to remember what he did there , if he always grabs you and never mixes it up by attacking you then you know that this time he will also grab you , so go for an out of shield option ( Marth's up-B for example) . But if your opponent is in the air and doesnt have an commandgrab then his only option is to do an aerial ( or simply land and do an tomahawk grab , but you can react to that) . So now that you got a slight overview on how to consider options i can move on to another extremely important aspect of " playing out of your mind " the Matchup-knowledge and how to properly play them . Herefore ill show you 3 videos of ZeRo playing against 3 different Characters whose matchups are played completely different : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv_fbeuVFa4 ZeRo (Sheik) vs Ranai (Villager)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meHzY064tCI ZeRo(Shiek) vs Dabuz(Rosalina&luma)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4DdyANscHI ZeRo(Shiek) vs Tearbear(Captain Falcon)

The first match : ZeRo vs Ranai:
ZeRo played that MU correctly and adapted throughout the set , notice how Ranai always breaks ZeRo's F-throw --> Bouncingfish combo with Villagers side-B and ZeRo adapted by using Up-air as an followup and so conditioned ranai to pick another option ? ZeRo also plays the ledgegame differently , always when Ranai was hanging at the ledge ZeRo shielded patiently and as soon as he was about to get up he did an retreating nair to cover the jump , get-up attack and the neutral get-up option and in case they did an get-up roll he F-tilted them. But in this matchup ZeRo respected Villagers campygame and just kept shielding well aware of Villagers fair and side-B , he also stayed away from the ledge more often then usual simply because sheik doesnt got the tools to challenge Villagers ledgegame , so he just went away from the ledge and charged needles . The needlecharging also forces Villager to get back onto the stage because of the mentalpressure that needlecharging is causing. Also notable is the fact that ZeRo was rolling much more often in this MU. Most noticably is the fact that he was almost always rolling after Ranai used his side-B, which is very dangerous because Ranai showed that he likes to go for the rollread into the Bowlingball , but the Reason why ZeRo didn't got punished was because he first shielded and reacted what Ranai was doing , then he rolled.
One last thing thing to point out is that zero shielded alot mid-range, obviously because of the fair and bair but he still never went to close to Villager because of the bowlingball , so he tried to carefully space his fair around the area where the bowlingball would hit.

The second match: ZeRo vs Dabuz:
ZeRo did a few mistakes here and there , he often didn't respect Rosalumas aerials when she was landing leading into him eating many dairs . And always when rosalina was sepperated from luma and ZeRo tried to kill luma by comboing He/She/it(genderneutral Luma) offstage , he missspaced his attack leading to luma being able to attack him.otherwise ZeRo did everything right , he for example realized that his fifty fifty D-throw mixup wouldn't work anymore so he went for another good killoption that works well against Rosalina&Luma : he got her offstage and waited for her to recover , then ZeRo always downtilted at the ledge leading to rosalina popping off so that he can get an followup out of it , most likely up-air, to kill. ZeRo also spaced perfectly around luma but he didn't knew how to deal with the rapidjabs. In theory its quite simple : Esam made a video about und it called "Deal with it: Rosalina&Luma"
You just need to hit luma from above

The third match: ZeRo(sheik) vs Tearbear(Captain Falcon):
Not much to say here , that matchup is pretty bad for Falcon so ZeRo didn't really need to pay attention to something special here. ZeRo simply read his movement and his habits and abused the fact that falcon doesn't have an projectile by needlecamping , ZeRo isn't shielding alot and he almost only spaces fair on his shield simply because Falcon doesn't have an good out of shield option to punish that so he doesn't need to mix it up by tomahawk-grabbing him or jumping away.ZeRo's offstagegame was very aggresive because Falcon has an bad recovery and overall sheik just has an much better neutral.

Conclusion: These examples show how important it is to play out of your mind , simply because you wont get that far when you try the same things over and over again. And this also shows that the player>the character. ZeRo doesn't win because he uses sheik, he wins because he is in everyway superior to us.It wouldn't have mattered with which character he would have played, only his cognitive skills matter. And he shows this by taking down the best sheiks in the world with Diddy! Even known its a bad MU for Diddy .So no matter how much hate people give you for using a toptier, remember that everything you earned yourself was earned rightfully AND NO ONE CAN DENY THAT.

Now lets get to the last aspect of playing out of your mind: reactiontime
In order to properly punish missinputs or a whiffed attack , or shield in time you need to react,FAST. Villagers bowlingball comes out at frame 25. With enough training it's possible to react to that.An good way to train reactions are videogames or simply smartphonegames like pianotiles or geometrydash. And an good way to test your reactiontime is to search for apps or websides which Are made to test it.

Finally i wanted to say that watching replays of your matches on youtube is crucial for improving. Whenever your Opponent damages you rewind the Video and look why that happened and how you could have avoided that. And next time you fight you'll be a little bit better...

Hopefully that helped you my fellow sheik mains , love you <3
