Hey SSB64 boards! The BEST of Nintendo series is definitely the Super Smash Bros series. I own all three of the Smash series and I have played SSB64 to Brawl since I was in Elementary school. I keep switching back and forth if I want to play Brawl or Melee or SSB64. I have seen so many vids of great players (especially Isai) and it makes me want to go to SSB64. I know the SSB64 community isn't as big as Brawl and Melee's, but can anyone give me some good reasons that I should start up SSB64?

Lol Fireblaster

People play smash 64 for multiple reasons:
1. They need a break from Melee or possibly brawl
2. They wish to play online...but dislike Brawl (Emulation play rocks)
3. There is 0 lag on emulators with P2P.
4. Smash 64 is the most balanced smash game
5. It takes moderately quick hands so it presents a challenge. (In between Melee and Brawl speed)
6. 0 to deaths are epic.....Smash 64 revolves around 0 to deaths
7. Hyrule Castle is the best smash 64 stage ever
8. Tight community due to its small size
9. You can chat with people unlike brawl online
10. Excellent connection and p2p are too good

Why people don't play Smash 64
1. Good connection sucks...most people use it
2. If you don't have quick hands...people will destroy you...quickly
3. There is a HUGE gap between the pros and the non-pros
4. Many people don't know about it (real main reason)
5. Many people dislike the keyboard and won't pay for an adapter
6. p2p is difficult to setup for first timers
7. some people think the game is too simple....those people don't know the pro side of the game

I see. I'm not a complete noob at Smash but I'm not pro either. I would say I'm a above average player. I would like to try out online as well.

One thing I like about smash 64 is that no matter what the matchup is, both characters have a chance to win. Even in the most extreme cases, like Fox vs Puff, both can win. Say that to Pichu vs Marth in melee, or Sheik vs Ganon in brawl (or anyone vs Meta knight). In that sense, it's the most balanced smash game.

...

It's true that punishment in this game is the most extreme out of the 3, so if you know what you're doing and your opponent doesn't and he gives you openings then you can beat him in 64, no matter what matchup.

However, that more or less holds true in Melee as well (I don't know anything about Brawl). If you are much better than your opponent or you know the matchup much better then you can win.

It's really the fact that our community is nonexistent compared to the other two that makes the game seem more balanced.

Between people of comparable skill level though 64 isn't significantly more balanced.

I'm just tired of hearing that.

No mayn you leir Dreamland is better.

They've already stated. Really, combos aren't 0-death in real matches [at least online], but devastating. 50-70% in one combo if you're not careful. It's close enough, more likely you'll need 2-3 combos to kill someone, which admittedly is more than the other 2 games.

If we are talking Brawl styled "combos" though, then yes 0-deaths are abundant. But lol, whomever considers something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV3IPtKYdow
A combo needs to get their head on straight. Sadly, that's what Brawl players consider a combo. >_>

Ok, to clarify my post:

Fox destroys puff, and is one of the most lopsided matchups in the game. Still, puff can win (as in, has a chance, as in the matchup is not 95-5). It's just that Fox has a huge advantage.

In melee, it's a similar idea I guess, but there are some one-sided matchups, like the marth vs pichu matchup, that marth just ***** pichu, and there is very little that Pichu can do about it.

Brawl, one-sided matchups are everywhere, most notably being the DDD infinitables, Sheik vs Ganon, and many more. Take Sheik vs Ganon for example. Both boards agree it to be 95-5 for Sheik. In other words, a Ganon should never beat a Sheik.

In 64, for the most part, any character can win. Usually first hit gets the stock (depending on how well they follow up the hit). Although Fox ***** puff, if puff gets one hit (huge if), then fox loses the stock. So even though Fox destroys puff, the puff can win, in that sense.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that considering the most lopsided matchups in all 3 games, 64 is the most balanced, where it is more likely for the worse off character to win as compared to melee and brawl.

If you need convincing to play this awesome game, then it's probably not for you.
Harsh...but I 100% agree. :]

Also, you don't have to stop playing brawl or melee to play 64. I play both melee and 64. I'm trying to be really good at both, which is gonna be a little bit rough if I go back and forth a lot :/ Two very different games, but I'm trying hard.

I play all 3 games, though my melee skills are questionable, and brawl I don't play other than tournaments. Just because you want to play 64, doesn't mean you should stop the others as well... until you figure out that smash 64 is the best of the 3 games and start playing only that...

What was your point supposed to be?

Fox ***** Jiggs in 64
Marth ***** Pichu in Melee
Fox does not **** jiggs in 64. its actually quite even.

most inbalanced matchup is probably Luigi vs Jigglypuff, Falcon vs Samus, or Kirby vs Yoshi in smash 64.

I picked up ssb64 b/c I don't have my cube up here in college and brawl fails.

Plus there was the nostalgia aspect of having played it so many years ago, and now returning to it knowing of AT's and such and essentially learning a whole new metagame got me hooked.

I mostly play 64 because I don't have enough time to invest to play Melee, and the deeper you try to go into Brawl, the shallower it turns out to be.

Wait so now that I'm done arguing game balance and character matchups and irrelevant things:

Has nobody given the reason that it's a ton of fun?

Because it is. I love me some melee but this game is really fun as well.

Oh and if you happen to not have anyone to play where you live there's a wonderful online feature as well.

I can agree on Luigi vs Jigglypuff being screwed up (but so is Fox vs Jiggs tbh) but Falcon vs Samus and Kirby vs Yoshi does not seem like extreme cases to me.

Btw since people started discussing unfair matchups, why have nobody mentioned Kirby vs DK yet? Seems like one of the most unfair matchups to me.

lol why are we discussing unfair matchups in a thread where we are trying to encourage someone to pick up smash 64 lol :p I know I probably started it by accident, but if we want to discuss matchups, we have a thread for that. post your opinions on these matchups when they appear in our character matchup chart discussion thread.

In my opinion, probably the best thing is the lagless online play. If there is no one in your area who plays smash 64 (was the case with me for the longest time), then you can play online against anyone in the world! (though the farther you go, more lag). If you are 10 times better than everyone in your area (or 10 times worse) and want to play someone at your level, you'll eventually find someone online. Nothing beats console, but when console isn't doing anything to help, online is a great option.

Oh and you can play any 64 game online, not just smash, so if you get bored of smash, you can pull out mario kart, mario party, *runs out of ideas*, and just play that with someone instead for a bit.

Mario Tennis is a good side game. The graphics are MESSED UP, but once you get to the game it's actually...playable. So long as you don't mind the bob-ombs being black squares. The stretch thing is gone in the actual game.

Should be played on Mupen though. Desynchs with project, and it's hard to tell if you desynched or not [hard to tell WHY they are sucking until both people mention it and scores are told by chat.

One of the best things in this game is that unlike melee, you don't get tired after playing for 2 hours. And unlike melee, you can also win playing slowly.

I'm sorry Dair I totally forgot about LOZ! I would have to say LOZ = Smash series though. Also I don't need convincing to see the beauty of SSB64 it is an amazing game I know I just want people's thoughts on it I've played SSB64 for about 10 years.

I disagree. The first time I got bored playing Brawl was just when I started playing it competitively (after unlocking everything), the first time I got bored playing SSB64 was after playing it for a year and I hosted my European tourney and I still played friendlies the next day, the first time I got bored playing melee has yet to come. And playing slowly depends on the character, imo the slowest chars in SSB64 (Luigi, Samus) have to be played faster than the slowest chars in melee (Samus, Ganon?) although melee's fastest chars are way faster.

Hmm kind of true. My point was, if you are going to play fast chars at high level in Melee like Fox or Falco for example, you gonna get TIRED (not bored) after not too long, unlike SSB64. Melee is more tiring when using the faster chars imo. In ssb64 this doesnt happen. You can play smart and not use your speed, and you can still win.

But you can get used to the speed. For example, snaking. I can snake for 2 hours without getting tired, and I don't play MKDS often. I just got used to it. Melee, you can get used to it too.

I get bored playing SSB64 if I play for 2 hours. I still love the game but I get bored doing almost ANYTHING that's repetitive for over 2 hours.

Snaking? From F-zero x, or some other game?

LoZ and SSB are different genres... if I didn't play competitively then I would say LoZ has the edge, but...

SSB/M has infinite replay value. Come on... I think it blows LoZ out of the water...
I lost my love for zelda when my save magically disappeared recently :p I decided to replay the game and after clearing most of it, with just a few temples to go it just wasn't there anymore. :<

wow that sucks. Actually, the same thing kind-of happened to me with every gamecube game. My save thing got corrupted, and I lost all of my games. I had to get a new save thing, and in the end I only played melee (had to re-unlock everything).

And my mario kart post was in response to the snaking question. Snaking is in Mario Kart (most of the versions), where you drift back and fourth to get the speed boost, making you go faster.

Ok, yeah I remember my Timesplitters 2 save getting corrupt for the ps2, that was a real bummer. It's the kind of game where you can keep unlocking small things pretty much forever and I had ALOT of cool stuff... not anymore tho.

I remember when I rented mario power tennis and I tried saving and it asked me "Do you want to make room for Mario Power Tennis?", I said yes, and it ended up deleting my whole memory card, ****.
