In philosophy class we were talking about the self, the body and soul and our teacher was talking about how the soul's meaning was to carry on heaven or what ever you might believe but how is that it?

How come that doesn't happen when you are born you try to do the right thing? I mean mindless animals like jellyfish know what they need to do. How come we wouldn't just do it on impulse? Nature programs us with basic skills and needs and goals to eat, sleep or what have you. But why won't the soul? I find that odd.

I mean I can understand why wouldn't start in heaven, because you must know what pain is to even understand joy. Just like if some how everything was the size and everything is big ask them what big is they won't know even if it's in front of them everywhere.

Thoughts or whatever. Also I believe in God and the soul.

Because, well, speaking logically, it doesn't exist. Science has yet to prove evidence of a soul in the human body.

I agree with this statement, but what is the point supposed to be? You are being very vague.

Thoughts or whatever. Also I believe in God and the soul.

Please source your argument.

In the theory in which there is a God and your soul either goes to heaven or hell, I would say the following:

God gave us free will, and created us in his image. The choice between heaven and hell would be your own, and a pre-programmed soul in which the 'right path' was set before you, would defy the point of overcoming temptation or the temptation of sin. Who is to say we do not already know that? Perhaps we do, but are simply corrupted at birth by the influence and interraction with our parents and surrounding guardians.

Debates don't go anywhere unless you give a (valid) reason for your stance on the topic.

Insane Carzy Guy, you have the burden of proof for stating the existence of a soul, so you need to give some sources. Otherwise, this debate will end up full of assumptions and dead in the water. This is just to keep the debate logical and less confusing. :)

I'd really like to debate you, but unfortunately, I have no idea what you said due to your bad grammars. Please type this up again.

Also please take off your signature.

I hate to admit this, but bringing something into the Debate Hall/Proving Grounds that isn't scientifically proven is quite the risk.

Also, a discussion on whether the soul knows something will eventually lead to a debate on God's existence, which then leads to argumentum ad infinitum.

So no God, soul, or self debates? really you lose a lot of things to argue if it has to be proven hard by something. How would you prove you are real? I didn't believe anyone was real since 3rd grade and I am starting to believe people are real now.

Some things make you think there has to be a God of some form take the first life on earth ok it's alve and stuff and was just created how does it know how to eat and reproduce what programed it? There are no guide lines on what it should do and I really doubt that it magicly knew how to reproduce and not die. really the best way to explain that is random atoms came together and somehow lived. But we are still missing the somehow.

There would have to be some kind of God a lot of things would be impossiblely random like feelings, hearing and seeing, thoughts and thinking, and how thinks work in all.

never mind/thread

You may want to quit while you're ahead. In order to avoid frame tearing by a DHer who has heard (and debunked) this argument before, I would recommend you head to the DH Archives and read similar threads to this one.

Disclaimer: I will not be the person doing said frame tearing, but just giving you a heads up.

There's nothing wrong with a philosophical debate (in fact, we could use more of those!), but religious debates tend to go nowhere.

This is sounding pretty religious to me. Either that, or the argument isn't well written:

someone asked me to give proof of a soul so normally that calls for someone to make it so yeah I wasn't really trying to go that way.

*ahem*

Sorry, I can't see anything wrong with what I've typed. Let me try again.

Corrections on your corrections in red.

You may get away with this kind of nonsense in User Blogs, but in the Debate Hall (and proving grounds, no less) I at least expect posters to use proper grammar and spelling. If you cannot formulate your thoughts in a precise and meaningful manner, this is not the place for you.

Now onto your topic:

...

><

OK! The soul's "meaning." By this I assume you mean the soul's purpose. Therefore, I say that some do believe a soul's purpose is to get back to heaven from whence it came. For me, the soul's purpose is to occupy the physical body in the form of electric signatures, or energy forms, that reside in our brains. Upon death these energy forms return to the magnet present at the earth's core, thus returning to the greater whole of electromagnetic energy that constitutes the Gaia or "mother earth" if you will.

This also imparts an assumption that even jellyfish have souls, as does every living creature, every animate molecule, every particle of sub-atomic matter... all energy belongs to a greater whole. It is in this that the coalescence of such in a human, focused in the brain of a human, results in a Human Soul.

I will share a personal experience that leads me to believe that I was born with a Soul, and that my Soul knew something (right from wrong), even before I could really speak. At the young age of three I witnessed a television show depicting a man killing another man, and my natural reaction was to cry, because the man was murdered and this seemed to me a horrible thing. Though unable to form complex thoughts, I somehow new murder was wrong (one of God's laws, interestingly enough).

Now did I know that I had a Soul? No. This knowledge came to me through reasoning. And so too did any such notions of my Soul's would-be destination upon death.

For your fish analogy and your original point: you are confusing Ultimate Purpose (purpose of a higher order) with that of biological purpose (survival instinct, etc.). That is why you cannot reconcile the fact that a Soul may indeed understand its desire to reach heaven or hell over time, and yet a jellyfish seems to be born knowing what to do with itself.

There are quite a few definitions of the soul. Some not bound entirely to a religious belief would be -

1 the emotional part of human nature; the seat of the feelings or sentiments.
2 the spiritual part of humans regarded in its moral aspect, or as believed to survive death and be subject to happiness or misery in a life to come: arguing the immortality of the soul.

The soul also can be understood to be simply a perception of morals and feelings.

Others believe it is an entirely seperate entity of the person you are, hosted in the vessel of a human body. Of course, this definition is something yet to be proven, only observed and supported through faith.

such as
you or your soul will go to a heaven or hell.
when you're dead, you'll cross a river to get to the afterlife
etc

Unfortunately though, this now becomes a debate on opinion without fact, and will end like that. :p
