I have been wondering recently, why many people choose certain characters, is it play style? enjoyment of the characters games? 'top-tier' choices? and i figured what the hell make a topic about it in the thread for the character i play. I love the metroid games, and the lore behind them, the characters etc.

edit-(i don't know why i went through the trouble of writing a smash semi-biography here, but oh well)

I have been playing as Samus since SSB64, she treated me well back then when i was just playing with some friends and family.

In melee i continued to use Samus as a main because i liked the fact that she was a tank(used crouch canceling way before i knew it existed lol) I went to a local gaming hub(they had a big screen with melee on it) and decimated every person that played me. until one person showed up, that person was Taj. (later on I met Forward, Demised, glide, B-stick, Chaostheory. etc)
Taj 2 stocked me...consistently and i was amazed. we became friends and have played melee since then.(this is relevant later on) because of Taj, forward, glide, Chaostheory and B-stick, i became the best Samus player in AZ(Taj was a better samus though >_<)

As for Brawl, i have been playing Samus since shortly after the japanese release. so far i have taken 4th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd and 9th at tournaments. (the 9th was a pairing against a friend in winners and losers) I have been loving the fact that i can say "bottom tier" when i beat people who play meta knight or snake because they are "top tier" but the fact that she is at the bottom of the tournament results list makes me very sad.

My goal with Samus is to become one of, if not the best. Sort of how Taj did so with mewtwo. It is my goal to prove she is a great character. i made the decision to play as her as soon as brawl was announced no matter how good or bad she was. so in a way Taj is my motivation for playing Samus. So far, i have won every Samus ditto in brawl, and hope to fight some good one's at AZONE 2.

I play Samus because I'm a fangirl, simple as that.
I've worshiped her since I was little, sorta viewed her as a role model. I waited for a Nintendo fighting game for ages, and when I found Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, I had my first orgasm. I played Samus in that game, and when Melee rolled round, nothing changed.
My only tournament glory was at my sister's college. I was sixteen, and I looked like I was ten. As such, all the college girls though I was the most adorable thing ever. "Awww, look at her! She's absolutely precious, she looks like she's in the fifth grade! You like Super Smash Brothers, cutie? We're having a tournament if you'd like to enter! Oh, isn't she cute?!"
I entered the tournament and placed first overall using Samus. I won about seventy-five dollars, and needless to say, I wasn't so cute anymore. They called me "Missile Rain" from then on outward.
As far as goals with Brawl Samus, I want to do what I've always done: have fun. If a tournament's in my area, I'll enter. If I place, awesome. If I don't, then I lost for a good reason. For me, it's all about having a good time. That's how I live, and that's how I play.

Because Metroid is cool. I use her to have fun and to prove to myself that it's more rewarding to use a character because I like them than it is to use them because they're overwhelmingly good.

I've played as Samus since Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 came out. Super Metroid was my first Metroid game, nay, my first Super Nintendo game that I had gotten for Christmas when I was nine years old (1994). After the SNES glory days were gone, I wanted the Nintendo 64, but my brother and I didn't get it until around 1999. Super Smash Bros. was our first game, and when I saw Samus, I knew I was going to play as her. It had been a long time since I'd seen anything Metroid. Even though she didn't get her game in the N64 era, I was happy to have her as a character in Super Smash Bros. From thence, I've been playing as Samus, regardless of whether she was buffed or nerfed.

Edit: I never got to what my goals were with Samus. I want to get better at playing as Samus, and I want to help the Samus community by learning anything new, even if it is the little stuff like transforming into Zero Suit Samus at a faster rate than normal and so forth.

Way back in the day I used to go to a friend's house and play (the original) Zelda. I made it pretty clear what I wanted for my next birthday. Ended up being an SNES with LttP. Fast forward some odd two years and I'm borrowing games from a friend, one of which was Super Metroid. I instantly fell in love with it. IMO it's still the best (single-player video)game of all time. I bought Metroid II and Super Metroid, and borrowed a friend's NES to play through the original. (Eventually, of course, I got a used NES and the original Metroid).

A number Metroid-sequel-less years later I'm at a friend's birthday party and trying out the brand new game he just got (maybe rented? don't remember): Super Smash Bros. I knew what character I was going to use pretty quickly and it didn't take me much longer to realize how much I enjoyed Smash, too.

Played Smash64 with some of the locals, had fun. Of course I got the cube 'n Melee as soon as Melee was released, and of course I stuck with Samus. I started dominating the local scene and thinking I was pretty good.

It wasn't until I got to The Ohio State University that I realized I wasn't. At all. One of Melee's top Samus players, Wattyman, was there to help me put my Samus in perspective. That's when I got serious with Smash. I managed to drag my roommates (I was in a quad) into it too. I don't think any of us did very well academically our first year. Samus' style in Melee began to grew on me. Baring one tournament - which I quickly got over - I never really felt my losses were because of the limitations of my character. No reason to switch away.

With Brawl's release starting with Samus was again the obvious choice. It came out, for better or worse, when I'm off from OSU for work. The smash scene here is horrible, and between gas prices and a surprisingly busy schedule I've not had the time or money to go to any notable tournaments. With the pretty awful local scene Samus and my comparatively extensive Melee experience has been sufficient.

Not really sure how the smash scene will be at OSU when I return in the fall. There's a chance I'll get really into Brawl there as I did Melee, and I'm a bit worried I'll become frustrated with the limitations of the new Samus and be forced away from her. Until then, though, I'll keep on crushing the locals with Sammy and zair spamming anyone I can get online.

I wasn't really into metroid when I started playing smash (i actually went "who on earth is samus? O.o" the first time i saw her), but I started off as a kirby user, then switched to try samus. She was really everything I wanted in a character, and I fell in love with her specials and her spike. I actually disliked the Melee samus' style despite the fact that I knew she was buffed, and I absolutely love the new samus' style even though she was nerfed.

I played her during the later days of Melee, i was going to change mains (i was tired of playing like every other Shiek lol). Well one of my favorite series was Metroid and i never got into Samus so i tried her out and she became my main

my goals for her is just to be good with her and find out ways for her to hold her own in Tourneys and against high tier characters

I play Samus because she is most like Mega Man (Who should have been in Brawl BTW). I am a huge Mega Man/Mecha/Hardsuit fan girl and Samus fits that category. I also like a controlling play style. A lot of Samus' game is around controlling the spacing of your opponent. People just can't randomly play her like some other character. It takes a lot of brain power to play Samus and I like that.

I hope to see your amazing Samus at AZ12step!!

I play Samus because... she has got to be one of the coolest video game characters ever created.
She is like Master Chief, except she is a woman.

I have played her since 64, and melee, but I was never really serious about it.

Brawl came out, and I have actually become a lot more serious with this game, clocking more hours than any other game I have played.
My goal with Samus is to just get better.
And I sure as hell don't want her low tier.

I play samus because it is the first step in my plans for world domination....
I figure she can take down 1 or 2 hemispheres at least. :)
