Event - E3 Invitational 2014 Why are people expecting so much info about Smash from E3?

Isn't Smash going to be in one big, hour long video? If so, they might have a lot of games to put in, so we can't get a lot of time devoted to Smash.

If this is true, expect only one or two newcomers, or 2 veterans.

I'm just saying, don't get too hyped. Be realistic, and you won't get disappointed.

One or two newcomers IS big news!

But in all seriousness, we'll be seeing a tournament with loads of straight up gameplay. We're probably going to find out a bunch of stuff from that alone, and Smash is one of Nintendo's biggest upcoming games, so it will probably get talked about for a decent amount of time during the video.

I would expect two veterans and possibly two newcomers, and maybe an off hand character to appear after the tournament (like Wii Fit Trainer's reveal). Obviously the entire roster won't be revealed...

I think a trailer, and some information regarding an unseen mode in the game will be talked about, and we'll move right along. The biggest game Nintendo will show off Zelda Wii U so I expect that to get some more attention since we know quite a bit about Smash Bros. at this point.

90 minute Q&A dedicated solely to Smash.

Smash is the biggest game for Nintendo this E3, it will get the biggest show.

Playable Demos and a Tournament which will allow us to understand all of the mechanic changes (gravity, hitstun, knockback, etc).

We will get a lot of info from this E3.

We are getting the Invitational, info during the Digital Event, and a questionnaire not to mention all the detail that the great people of Smashboards can find means we are getting at least a weeks worth of info

^ Basically this. I'd be happy with one newcomer TBH.

With the Q&A as well we can expect a lot of questions to be answered and with that gameplay tons of info on move-sets and stages.

You're expecting too much. The most we'll likely get is one or two newcomers and a couple of veterans. And then add to the fact that what you put is so specific, prepare to be disappointed.

We're not getting the same amount of character confirmations we got at the Direct, that should be obvious to everyone. The Q&A won't bring in character confirmations, neither will the tournament or Best Buy demos, it rests solely on what they present in the E3 Direct, and Smash will probably have 15 minutes at the very most in that, and that's being generous.

One or two newcomers and a 3DS release date is the safest bet.

What we're probably getting is a lot of info about how the game plays since our fellow fans will be able to play it, and we're also going to get A LOT of gameplay footage. That's the real draw of E3 in regards to Smash, not character confirmations but the gameplay itself.

We can always get veteran confirmations after the E3 presentation too if Sakurai wants to reveal more to please fans.

The reason there is such a high expectation for E3's announcements is because the 3DS version is being released within the next couple months, which means the final roster will be known very soon.

Problems with this

  1. To many unlockables from the past, he probably only showed luigi lucario and toon link for special cases.
  2. Its ganondorf not ganon.
  3. Ridley or mewtwo is far more likely to be shown at E3 than palutena.
  4. It does not necessary rule out 4 newcomers, (2 on tournament day 1 on the other 2 days after) but i do think 3 newcomers is happening.
  5. To many veterans 3 or 4 is alteast going to happen.

People are expecting tons of info from E3 for three reasons:

1) Hype: Hype is hard to control, once you get hyped both your mind and your body rushes. Mixing hype with curiousness does not help in calming down either.

2) Patience: Waiting for E3 seems to be taking forever and people are doing things to pass the time. You remember the old saying "Good things comes to those who wait"? Well, people who are waiting for E3 are hoping their patience will pay off in the long run.

3) Curiousness: Curiousness goes hand in hand with hype, but curiousness is different for one reason.

1. We don't know what will be shown alongside the games we do know at E3. There are some many rumors of a possible, Metroid/Starfox/F-Zero Wii U/3DS game, the chance of seeing New IPs from Nintendo. Even more games that have yet to show gameplay, like Legend of Zelda U.

Nintendo has been keeping a pretty good poker face and we cannot wait until they show their hand.

Edit: Forgot that this was about Smash Brothers......well then, people are hanging on the edge of their seats, hoping their favorite character got in.

Largely because Nintendo's putting so much emphasis on Smash this year. It's been a long, long time since Nintendo has given a non-Pokemon game this much attention and the first time in E3 history where Nintendo has put so much focus on one game. They are going above and beyond to hype this game so an info dump wouldn't be surprising in the least.

If it means Smash and Zelda getting all the hype, I just hope they don't overshadow the other titles. I don't want to imagine low marketing and sales for Bayonetta 2, Monolith Soft's X, and other games Nintendo heavily invested on. They'll keep getting the same crap that Nintendo doesn't make new IPs and whatnot. :/

People will always say that Nintendo does not make New IPs.

Some don't even know that Xenoblade Chronicles and X are some of Nintendo's newest IPs.

Exactly. :/

I'm going to generalize here, but when X was shown during the E3 Direct, no one gave a damn. Not the fans or the media. All the people cared about was Smash, and I'm going to expect the same for this year's E3. It's this Nintendo cycle that keeps on happening, and when your usual Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, and Smash get announced, they're the only things that set Nintendo fans on fire.

I want to hope for all games getting equal representation, but if not, then oh well.

People can be hyped, but I'm personally keeping my expectations low.

I mean, 6 or 7 veterans? That's just setting yourself up for disappointment, no offense.

2-3 is more realistic or reasonable.

Funny how everyone is saying an August release date for the 3DS version, claiming it's realistic, but yet they're not using the same logic here.

Note: I am not trying to be an *** and tell people they can't be excited, I'm just saying to not get your hype too high.

Why? Just look at the Direct's results. Some people were disappointed/found things to complain about.

E3 is just gonna be a repeat of that for some people.

With so much emphasis Nintendo is putting on Smash at E3, being realistic about what they would deliver would be a kick in the nuts.

Well, to be fair, with the situation Nintendo is in right now they NEED to pull off something big at such an upscale event that is E3. We also have the mysterious NFC that could also be linked to Smash which is a whole other discussion.

Either way i'll be happy with the gameplay videos, release date, and at least 2 characters. I'm easy to please :)

Alone, one newcomer is big news. So I suppose my expectations are just fine. I am also excited for what e3 offers pertaining to Nintendo. Not necessarily Smash, perhaps that is where a lot of the hype seems to be coming. Especially as certain Nintendo IP might have something to do with Smash. Three to six minutes of Smash news is a lot more than we ever get really. The e3 one year ago was great, so as long is this is not worse than that, we should be fine.

A proper name, release date, gameplay footage and a couple newcomer trailers would be enough to satisfy me, and those are all plausible things to expect at E3. Sakurai also seems to thrive off presentation, so it should be a good show.

We also have to keep in mind that most people had really low expectations of the Direct too and yet we wound up with more than 5 months worth of info when a lot of people talked themselves down to expecting 1 or 2 characters. People can believe whatever they want but, with as big of an event E3 is and how much focus Smash is getting this year, I'm surprised so many people are expecting the bare minimum again.

They are probably trying to not get their hopes high, just in case what they hope happens, does not happen.

People will hype themselves into madness, we're talking about a place where the slightly amount of the color purple in a stage screenshot will cause a frezy or entire sentance from the devs can somehow be broken down in five different ways.

I said this a hundred times before, but hey, what's a hundred and one more.

As others have already mentioned, the 3DS version is coming out not too far beyond the horizon if not sooner, so ultimately this E3 will be the last time Smash will get a major marketing boost as far as the character roster is concerned. And with the Wii U still in dire straights, Nintendo will want Smash to live up to the massive hype they've built up for it, so people expecting more then a couple reveals, for both veterans and newcomers, is completely justified by this point.

I do agree to an extent; however, we might have another dedicated Direct prior to release. Something reminiscent of the Mario Kart 8 Direct. In that event, that would be the last time Smash would get a major marketing boost as far as the roster is concerned.

Depending on the release date, this is most likely the last time for major Smash footage, barring a Direct a few weeks before release. As a result, people are expecting a decent amount, and I don't think 1-3 Newcomers and 2-4 Veterans would be that unreasonable for the event.

Additionally, we're guaranteed to get lots of gameplay footage between the tournament, demo on the floor, and Best Buy demos, so even if the demo isn't a perfect representation of the final product (see the Brawl demo), people will at least have a general idea of the speed of the match and how new characters play.

I agree that Smash will probably get another direct a week or so before release.

Also there will probably be 1 or 2 mini directs between the 3DS and the Wii U release showcasing new modes and stages present on the Wii U.

We got a tournament with well-known competitive contenders and a well-known journalist in the sector presenting it, a thing that never happened before. We have a 90-minute Discussion about the game, and so far the longest Direct we had on the game was 45 minutes long and showed EVERYTHING about the game.
Of ****ing course we expect a lot of new information about the game.

That is always possible too. It all depends on how soon the 3DS version comes out (not this month I'm willing to bet).

But when they revealed the characters playable in the tournement and quite possibly the demo, there were no new comers or veterans. What if there are no character reveals D: :urg:

AND WHAT WILL THE PROPER NAME BE?? i don't want it just to be Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3ds! How about a nice epic name, like brawl or melee! Something like Rumble or at least Super Smash Bros Four Wii U and 3ds, get it, huh, okay I will stop.
