Which Sonic character deserves to be a second rep the most? (A Sonic general support threads.)

Knuckles. He's Sonic's original rival and move set is a missing ingredient in Smash. Eggman, I don't mind. I'm interested, he's deserving to the extreme. Knuckles or Eggman.

Tails would be bland, honestly.

Deserving spot is a toughie.
I say it’s evenly divided among Tails / Eggman / Shadow.

But me? I would love having Metal Sonic because he’s a speedster and villain (kept villain). Not to mention my favorite villain.

I fear that although Amy and Knuckles deserve it too, “Sonic’s self designated girlfriend” and “Sonic’s 1st rival” won’t cut it.

I’ll take any of these any day, though.

Dr. Eggman since he has been a villain and occasionally a good guy. He has been there from the very start alongside Sonic. Also to boost the "non-hero" count of the roster. He's also loads more entertaining as a character since he's evil just for the fun of it. And let's face it, his voice is also entertaining/amazing. He's an easy pick out of them all, really.

I say Tails because I think we could use more sidekick characters and that he would make for the most interesting addition out of the Sonic characters with his powers. Also, he is one of my favorite Sonic characters and he is one of my most wanted characters in Smash, so I am a little biased.

Sonic is a prolific enough series that I think it deserves to have all its mains represented in Smash. Ideally (I'm talking really pie-in-the-sky here), Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Dr. Robotnik would all be fully playable, but I'd gladly settle for just the first three plus Amy as an assist trophy and Robotnik as a stage hazard or boss.

Honestly, there are some characters out there who would be better served as bosses than as playable characters and I think Dr. Robotnik is one of them. Imagine him turning up in the middle of a hectic fight in his mech from Green Hill Zone or Marble Zone, and just floating around doing his thing until someone takes him out like the Yellow Devil. And then the explosion he gives off (as he makes his classic "Ouch!" face) could damage or launch the fighters.

The idea of a playable Robotnik in a mech doesn't appeal to me, honestly. I want to see him standing on his own two feet, actually throwing punches and stuff. All the other bad guys (sans Bowser Jr.) are out of their vehicles, including Wolf, who is almost all vehicle. It wouldn't feel right if Robotnik couldn't do his own fighting.

I used a concept for Eggman that I didn't word accurately by then. I can see a fighting concept for Eggman where he uses a back attachment device that would represent his mech and the weapons it would use.

This would be his Smash model.



His recovery can be rocket boots for examples. Its really not hard to see. You just need to critical think.

I don't think that they're big enough. The only major characters left are Amy Rose and Dr. Eggman.

Hmm, ranking how deserving each of these Sonic characters are huh? I guess the best way to go about that is to go down the list!

Amy Rose​

• I feel so bad for Amy. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Mania brought back Mighty and Ray, but Amy has been working hard to establish herself as the 4th in the Sonic series for a while now. Granted, I know Mania is classic oriented, and Amy has no gameplay from that era, outside of Fighters and R, but Advance Amy could've been worked into her classic self. Be that as it may, how do I feel about her chance in Smash? Well, if we somehow got Tails, Eggman, Knuckles, and Shadow, I'd easily see her as the next character, no question.

Blaze the Cat​

• I... honestly don't know what's been up with Blaze lately. Sonic Forces tried it's hardest to bring in as many characters from the Sonic series as possible, but it somehow skipped over Blaze. Huh, it also lacked Big. Was Forces trying to hide some kind of cat hate within the game!?! No, that's absurd, cats were choices for the custom hero. Well, at any rate, I do think Blaze could be an interesting choice, but Sega just doesn't use her enough to make me see her as plausible. Shame, at least she'll always have Sonic Rush.

Dr. Eggman​

• I personally don't mind Bowser Jr.'s mech style gameplay. I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it has it's charms. Do I think it can be improved upon though? Absolutely, 100%, and if there was a character to do that with, it'd be Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik himself! I do understand that this isn't usually Smash's general process though. Villains, for some reason, are seen as less necessary than sidekicks. I mean, Luigi came before Bowser, King K. Rool came long after Diddy, etc. But Luigi debuted long before Bowser ever did, and Diddy debuted alongside K. Rool, whilst initially being a DK Jr. redesign. Eggman has Tails beat in the debut scenario, and as the second most important character in the series (hey, can't have a game without an antagonist). Eggman's my personal choice for most deserving second Sonic rep.

Knuckles the Echidna ​

• Knock knock it's Knuckles, but will the door (into summer) be answered? I was honestly kinda surprised to see him as an assist this game. I actually thought this and the concept of echoes meant good things for... a certain other character to be discussed shortly. So, with his assist status, in the hypothetical scenario where another game comes with a new Sonic character, Knuckles is clearly the best bet, right? Well... at least to me, not exactly. Knuckles has popularity, but his digging and... I guess those homing attacks are supposed to be the Maximum Heat Knuckles attack... make for a more translatable assist than say Tails, who I honestly think would be turned into another beetle or boss galaga. Knuckles is easy the most identifiable fighter character from Sonic, but just because you're associated with fighting doesn't mean you'll make the cut, look how long it took to see Little Mac join us. Granted, I do think Knuckles has a shot, but others like Tails and Eggman come first.

Mighty the Armadillo​

• Ouch, um, it's great to see characters like Mighty and Ray back, and even cameos for Fang/Nack, Bark, and Bean in Mania, but it's a bit recent after being MIA for so long. Put bluntly, they need more time reestablishing themselves before any of those guys become big time contenders.

Shadow the Hedgehog​

• I'm sure you probably looked at my profile picture and thought "gee, I know how high Shadow will rank with this guy." Well, looks can be deceiving. I do indeed believe that Shadow is deserving of some representation as a fighter, but not before Eggman and Tails. Well, actually, I'm in the camp that, if Sakurai wanted to, Eggman could be the unique choice, Tails the semi-clone choice, and Shadow the echo choice. I do see merits for Shadow as a unique or semi-clone as well, but I remember him for his origins in SA2, where he played mostly as a Sonic clone. That's the way I want to see him honored in Smash, where things began for him. Regardless, Shadow's a good middle ground contender. Has merits, but certainly shouldn't be ashamed to lose out to characters that have been with the series longer.

Silver the Hedgehog​

• I can't really say much more than "I like Silver, but I have to acknowledge that in the grand scheme of things, he's not the most important/popular Sonic character." Would love to see him get a spin-off title focusing on his Sonic 06 abilities, you know, in an actually good game where his abilities don't feel tacked on to the established Sonic formula.

Miles 'Tails' Prower​

• I've mentioned this character quite a bit already, and while I would choose Eggman personally, Tails is also a great option. I just prefer having the hero and the villain, and then add all who support afterward, but an argument can be made against that, and I respect that view. Tails is indeed a perfect choice. Whether it be unique or semi-clone (think we could see some Tails' Adventure elements in his set?), Tails is a rather high contender for a second Sonic rep.

Vector the Crocodile​

• Aw, this is hard. I like Vector. He combines both elements of the other chaotix members. He has his serious side when need be, like Espio, and he can be silly, like Charmy. But do I think he has a legitimate shot at being the second Sonic rep? Well, I mean, he has origins dating back as far as Sonic and Eggman, as pictured, but, unfortunately, he just doesn't have the prominence in the series. Ah well, I still like ya Vector.

Metal Sonic​

• Interesting scenario, could be any echo, semi-clone, or unique character. Incredibly malleable to any of these roles, yet I think he's edged out by other characters in terms of prominence and popularity. But he is Eggman's most persistent robot, so hey, he could surprise us all.

As such, you now have at minimum 5 characters to screw around with (being himself, Espio, Charmy, Vector and Mighty, seems as they were on the title screen) and at maximum, 7 (including Heavy and Bomb.)
Plus, representation for a console that was universally pretty much hated at the time. Yes, the 32X is it's own console in my book.

If as some people believe Sonic CD is chronogicaly the second game in the frist Sonic timeline (two world) then I think Metal Sonic could fit and bonus it's a villain.
