Most of us got into Smash in the first place because it had one or more of our favorite characters. What was your first Smash game and what characters in particular got you in to it? I wonder if anyone will buy Smash 4 just for Mega Man or the villager or accidentally think it's a new Wii Fit game.

My first was Melee after seeing it had Pikachu and Yoshi in it.

I remember going to Best Buy in like 2004, seeing Melee. I was pretty young, so I had no idea what it was, except that it was a Nintendo fighting game. I got my hands on it and saw the blurb for Zelda on it. I love LoZ, and I love Zelda herself, so I immediately got it and started playing. She's still one of my mains today because of that.

For Brawl, I just heard there was a new game. I loved Melee, and decided to get it. And I was pretty content.

So far, there is no character that makes me want the game desperately, though Toon Link returning is good enough for me. All I need is a return of Mewtwo, and a confirmation of either Toon Zelda or Palutena and that will make me buy the game.

I just got SSB64 lent from a friend of mine and when booting the game it came out as a jawdropping realization how most of my childhood heroes from either TV-shows or videogames belonged to the same "company" (namely Mario, DK, Link, Captain Falcon and Pikachu). And then I got to meet so many new favourites, like Kirby which I consider still my overall main in the games.

It was back during the NES days when the commercial came out. At first, I thought it was just another Mario game, but then, I saw Pikachu with them. I'm like, wait, Pikachu, you're not a Mario character. Then they start beating the crap out of each other. At the time, i've heard of Zelda games before, but never played a single Zelda game at the time, so of course, I called Link Zelda.

Strange... Seems Pikachu is the one that got most people in but he's the one who shows up the least out of the big 4 (Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu).

When I first heard about Smash Brothers, it was Captain Falcon that was hyped up by my buddies, so I guess you could say him.

you do realise the game came out in '99, way after the NES was discontinued

Definitely Link. He was the very first character I tried in Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 64, though I eventually ended up maining Ness.

Though Smash 64 was the first Smash game I played, the first game in the series I actually bought and owned was Super Smash Bros Melee. I had gotten into Melee simply because it was a sequel to the original game. The first character I tried in Melee was Ness, but over time I ended up maining Marth.

When Super Smash Bros Brawl was first announced, I was thinking about skipping the game, as at the time I was a little tired of Smash Bros. But, after learning Pit and Meta Knight, and later Sonic, were going to be in it, I was immediately won over. In Brawl, I had planned to main either Pit, Meta Knight, Sonic, or Marth, but it was ultimately Zelda whom I stuck with.

[EDIT] Oh, and as for Smash 4, I was considering skipping that one as well, but after learning tripping was removed, I decided to give it a chance. There is no particular character that is motivating me to buy the game. Even if none of mine most wanted newcomers make it into the game, I probably will buy the game anyway. Though, I would be very pleased if Isaac made it in.

I didn't own a(n?) N64 back in 1999, but I played it at my friend's house and other places.
I always played the 1 Player mode on Smash 64 with Pikachu. I never did the multiplayer mode... for some reason.

I thought it was pretty odd (but cool) to have Pokemon characters beside characters like Mario and Link.

I played the N64 version first a really long time ago as Fox. I also played Melee before I bought it a few times and my favorite character was Fox. So, Fox. :fox:

My friends and I rented Smash 64 one night at a sleep over. There were 5 of us so we had to take turns but it was like finding golden treasure in the back of a movie gallery.

No specific character. The idea of a Nintendo crossover like this was just awesome to me. And it still is.

My favorite character back in the day was Kirby, though.

I got introduced to Smash 64 by friends, and Brawl was in fact the first Nintendo game I ever bought. So no specific character I guess.

I remember seeing Brawl in Toys R Us... I only recognized Mario, Pikachu and Red the Pokemon Trainer. However, the "masked thing" looked cool, so we asked for Brawl for Christmas. That masked thing was Meta Knight.

Interesting. I take it you were not into Nintendo games before hand?

I only really got into Melee because my friend had it. While I knew a lot of the characters and liked their games I didn't really have any emotional attachment to any of them. I just liked it because it was fun to play

Diddy Kong, Dedede and Sonic were pretty big motivators for Brawl though.

None did. I did grow up with Nintendo. However, if I had to choose a character, it'd be Donkey Kong since well... my SNES came with Donkey Kong Country, and I do mean I played the 64 version first.

I remember the commercial for the N64 version got me interested, so I made sure to buy the strategy guide to learn about the game (didn't have the Internet at the time and I liked guides because they had artwork in them.) I knew about fighting games because I was a big fan of Street Fighter and Marvel VS Capcom, and at the time I knew:

Mario
Luigi
Donkey Kong
Link (the first Zelda game I played was A Link To The Past, so I knew that Zelda was the princess because the first thing you do is rescue her, and I just assumed Link didn't have a name because you can put a name in for him.)
Yoshi
Fox
Pikachu (I knew Pikachu because Pokemon Red & Blue had just come out and there was a massive ad campaign for it.)

The NES and the SNES were my only consoles, and I was a huge fan of the Mario platformers, Donkey Kong Country, A Link to the Past, and Star Fox 64 (I would play it at video game stores, since I didn't get an N64 until the end of the 90s.)

So basically I was all "A fighting game with the Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda guy, and Fox?! THIS IS AWESOME!!"

I barely remember from where I first heard about Smash Bros., but Brawl was my first game, and the fact that Sonic was in it was the only reason enough for me to get it.

Link.

I grew up with a NES, SNES and 64 so smash made me lose my ****. Star Fox was amazing to me so they had Fox, I loved Metroid and they had Samus, and them, out of ****ing left field...Captain Falcon, someone I would have loved and never expected. I was an F-Zero freak when I was a kid. I remember playing it on the Super Nintendo systems they had in some hotels. When F-Zero X came out I had it before anyone in since it was a Japanese copy; I was addicted to the game and the Blue Falcon. After seeing him in the game I felt as if this game was made especially for me. I love Captain Falcon, implied homo.

Not a specific character. I started with Melee, which I picked up relatively late (it was Player's Choice already). I didn't have a Gamecube - my younger brother did, I had a Playstation 2 - but I had heard about Smash 64 and that it apparently was pretty good, so I figured that the successor would be worth the € 20,- gamble.

As a note, despite me having a Playstation, I recognized a few of the characters; Mario, Bowser, Peach, Pikachu, DK, Yoshi and Kirby I all knew from games I played over at friends houses or from my Game Boy games. It was sort of like an 'educated' gamble, and damn if it didn't pay off.

While im the Smasher, my father was the one that bought the game in 1999 (N64) and i know that he already know several franchises: Zelda(his favorite perhaps), Starfox,Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Mario, and Pokemon. So yeah the characters who got him to buy the game were Link, Fox, DK, Yoshi, Mario and Pikachu; 6 different character.

When i saw the N64 Boxart of Mario AND Pikachu being in the game i got overly excited. I just couldn't believe seeing both Mario and Pikachu being in the same game together and went out to get it as soon as possible. Hilariously, i never managed to main Pikachu and im still not very good with him lol.

The Pokémon characters, most notably Jigglypuff, got me to play Melee at a friends place back when it first released in Europe, and after that I went out and bought Melee and a Gamecube.

When Brawl was announced, I hadn't played Melee for some time after my second copy of the game broke, and I had begun delving into a lot of other games. So I watched the Brawl trailer for the first time, and thought it looked just dandy, but what really sold me on it was Meta Knight. Sure ZSS and Wario were awesome too, and Snake was ****ing weird to have in this game but still more than welcome (had no idea who Pit was beyond being a trophy in Melee though), but Meta Knight was the ****, right there I was sold. Pokémon Trainer (mostly Ivysaur) and Dedede further solidified my hype for the game.

I took interest in Melee and Brawl when I saw that Bowser and Diddy, respectively, were playable. With the knowledge that I could experience each additional feature of the games with those characters specifically, it was easy to sell me on virtually everything else.

64 was a whole new experience for me, never heard of the game before.
My cousin brought his N64 over with a "BRAND NEW GAME YOU GOTTA PLAY THIS"
So we turned it on. And there he was... in all his glory.
My favourite Nintendo character ever.
Yoshi.
Played the **** out of him.
Got a crack out of his egg lay.
Got my parents to buy the game for me a few months later.

Melee was kind of the same scenario.
Didn't know the game was out.
Gamecube was brand new and foreign to me.
My friend rented a 'Cube and Smash and some other games for a birthday party.
I was overwhelmed the first time I saw the character selection screen.
So many god damn characters.
Naturally I picked Ice Climbers because they were the most obscure and there were FREAKING TWO OF THEM!

Brawl no single character sold the game for me, the game itself did.
But Diddy Kong sure revved my engines.

This time Villager has tickled my fancy.

None of them. The first Smash game I owned I did not buy. It was a hand-me down from my older brother basically along with the 64, and other games and other systems. And Smash 64 is the reason I bought Melee and Melee was the reason I bought Brawl.

So I'm not most people when it comes to why I bought my first Smash game :p.

Super Smash Bros.: What sold me the game was seeing Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi duke it out and fight against each other. That was more than enough to convince me to get the game as a child.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: Seeing Bowser, Peach, and Zelda enter the fray was something that definitely got me excited! Also seeing a Nintendo Power issue showcasing Marth got me wondering who he was also caught my interest. I also heard Mewtwo was in the game and a friend told me about Mr. Game & Watch and I wondered who he was.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl: I definitely wanted to play this game immediately when I saw Meta Knight enter the playing field in the first trailer… then Pit showing up and Zero Suit Samus coming out and… freaking Wario finally getting into a SSB game definitely got me hyped for the game! That E3 trailer was brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Characters like Diddy Kong, King Dedede, and Sonic also got my hyped for this game.

Super Smash Bros. 4: Seeing Pit and Bowser get changes surprised me. So, when I saw Luigi get announced, I was extremely cheerful to see my favorite character get possible changes in this game! Also, Sonic returned and that is awesome. However, none of the newcomers so far have truly gotten me to a major hype point (including Mega Man, but that's because I never really played Mega Man games). I think what will get me hyped for this game even more is to see characters like Wario and Ganondorf get changes or newcomers like Little Mac, Bowser Jr., and King K. Rool get confirmed.

EDIT: My first game was the original on the N64, but there is always that one character or that one thing that will get me hyped for these games. I guess I wanted to reminisce in these memories.

'Twas the summer of 1999. A young 8 year old me was a huge fan of Super Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Pokemon Blue. Then I learned from a friend of a magical game called Super Smash Bros for the N64 where Mario, Link and Pikachu beat the crap out of each other. My birthday was approaching and that was the gift I wanted from my mom and dad. I've been hooked on the series ever since.
