Where to Start?

I'm looking to begin participating in tournaments and hopefully become better in the process. The problem is, I have no idea how or where to begin. I'm hoping someone could shed some light for me, whether it be just by linking me to another thread or explaining to me.

I reside in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
