Today I was minding my business, surfing Gamefaqs, and one statement I saw was "If you havent played every game in a series and have no merchandise, ur not a fan". Ive seen it many times and each time, lt bugs me. Take FE for example, I absolutely loved it since Melee/FE7, but because I cant play 2-6, Im not a real fan, I say thats elitist bull****. Hasnt being a fan always been not about attacking others for elements out of there hands, but having FUN in the games.

Discuss?

No, you have to know Roy's birthday, blood group and penox size to be conisdered a FE fan. Live with it.

Tbh though, I guess people enjoy being elitist about stuff. Don't let it bother you and just keep on enjoying the games you like. Their opinion means naught.

GameFaqs:
If that is the case, I doubt there is even 10 whole Mario fans (By your standard of what a 'fan' is).

If you enjoy the games, then your a fan.
If you were a raging fan boy then you'd probably have everything to do with the series.

I'm a fan of Smash Bros. and I never played the original. That doesn't stop me from being a fan.

I don't know what's sadder, people being so elitist, or that people are mad about something on GameFAQ's.

I don't know what's sadder, people being so elitist is way worse than people getting mad about something on GameFAQ's.
I agree 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000Kx(9001x1337)%

A fan, from my interpretation, is a person who has experienced a work (be it a video game, song, movie or other fictional series), is impressed and positively affected by it, and develops both a coherent opinion and an enduring interest in that work. I've only played Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, but I am most definitely a fan of the series and intend on holding a long-term interest in its following games. I'm no less a fan of Ghost In The Shell (despite having missed on several facets/episodes of the series) than I am of Scrubs simply because I'm not as experienced or well versed as some other fans.

That being the assessment of a good fan. Fan Dumb, however, has uncontrollably destructive consequences. D:

If your a fan of something, you enjoy it and support it. If you haven't played [insert game here], but played numerous [insert game series games here], I'd thought you'd be a fan, yes, no?

I think you're an awful fan if you agree with:
"If you havent played every game in a series and have no merchandise, ur not a fan".
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

People just say these things so that they feel like they are better fans then the next guy.
Honestly, I don't think anyone cares about who's a better fans than others. Just enjoy the video game!

*nowhere does it say you have to basically "sell your soul" to something

Good question. I've always considered myself a fan of Final Fantasy, before I even played Final Fantasies 1-6. Doing so only made me a "big" fan. A fan is a fan, but there are certain levels of being one, like you can be a football player, then be a professional football player.

btw, GameFAQs was a horrible example for the site. It really shouldn't have been mentioned. :p

Ive seen examples of it even here, GFaqs was just the most recent example.

You make a good point on fan levels Heartz (obviously Fan"person" is at the top of the spectrum, but no one wants to be that)

Wow, a lot of people on gamefaqs really take the term "fan" really far.
I'm a fan of video games. Does this mean I not only have to play every single game in existance, but worship and covet every single one? Oh my.

I'm also a fan of windex. I don't think I have to buy every variation and bottle of windex I see. I'll just get windex before I get CLR or whatever.
Some people are such nerds.

EDIT: Maybe people are getting fanboy mixed up with fan. In that case, fanboy =/= fan.
fanboy is something you do not want to be, because God will hate you. Being a fan is good, because it shows you aren't a heartless critic, or a robot.

Haha. Hey, blowtoes.

True. It all comes down to avidity and dedication. It's funny how people can assume the meaning of a term when they can easily go to Google Definitions and Wikipedia.

Some people are just idiots.

lol Hey Heartz

Fanboys could easily search google, but then they wouldn't be able to give themselves an advantage over the lesser nerds. :p

Also: This is a real fan.

Fandom on certain games does have it's own criteria of sorts, but in the case of FE games, all you can do to be a fan is to enjoy the game's mecahnics and storylines and that's it... although most players do not have access to the originals (only through roms and such)

in the case of the FF series, the ones i hate the most are people who are obsessed with 7 and never played anything else or even enjoy it (8, 9, 10, 12, 1-6,) well I'll leave 1-3 off since it's too old lol... i'd seriously want to slap people for cosplaying an advent children character

cosplay and buying related muchandise as a criteria to be a fan is just plain stupid.

and gamefaqs is just a crap forum with 0 proper moderation and endless trolls and stupidity.

I'll admit to this, I'm a fan of squaresoft games since i've played alot of them in my time and enjoyed some of them, even know most of the games and their storylines or gameplay mechanics

Haha. I find that pretty sad as well.

People who just played Final Fantasy 7 aren't a Final Fantasy fan, but a Final Fantasy "7" fan. They are so quick to knock the others before trying them. I do believe the same thing is going to happen with FF13. What they like is the futuristic Final Fantasies, but FF was traditionally in Medieval period. They could only be "indirect" fans, which aren't really fans at all.

I won't lie, I loved FF7, but not for the same reasons as its so-called "fanboys". I didn't like it because Sephiroth was a "bad-*** swordsman" or the romantic twist. I enjoyed it because it was Final Fantasy. I don't need to give any details on that.

A real fan is someone who enjoys a series or otherwise classifiable group of games for whatever reason. Anything more obsessive than that falls in the realm of fanboy.

I kinda disagree. "Fanboy" is merely the term for a male fan. Nothing more. lol

http://www.reference.com/search?q=Fanboy

"Fanboy is a term used to describe any individual who is devoted to a single subject in an emotional or fanatical manner, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. A very essential and very common for a fanboy is to become aggressive or violent to discuss the amateur for whom it is dedicated, often leaving behind the taste of others or even underestimated.

The term is most commonly associated with adolescent and teenage males but can be applicable to any age or sex, and is mostly applied by others as a derogatory label."

The term for a male fan is "male fan."
