Well, Reserved said it. The CSS probably uses the character backgrounds from the site with gradients (bottom-to-top).

I wouldn't dwell too much on a fake leak but so I'm not derailing, Mario is Red, Pikachu is yellow, Dark Pit is dark purple...it's just the color the character is most symbolized with.

It's probably just a color that's supposed to balance well with the other colors in the character's portrait. Failing that, it's a color that goes well with the character for some reason or another.

It's like the others have said, the character's background colors on the website.
I think the colors were added so that you can differentiate characters easier on the smaller 3ds screen.

I´ve also been thinking about this, my conclusion is that theres 54 characters in the rooster, based on that each group will have 9 characters.

Theres a picture that earlier showed 3 separated groups of characters to choose from based on the background color of the characters. Looked like some kind of crewmode. I was looking for the picture a bit on miiverse yesterday to actually show this, but couldnt find it there and checked the big direct and didnt notice it there either
