What kind of CRT should I get to play PM at its best?

I'd like to get a CRT to play Smash with minimal lag. I'm not very knowledgeable about TVs, though.

Afaik you don't need a CRT because it doesn't need to scale up

If you find a 480p native LCD tv and use composite cables you won't have lag from re-sizing the image. These days a fair number of LCD monitors actually have about the same amount, if not less, lag than CRT's do, but they require a composite to hdmi/d-in converter. Some crt's have noticible lag, but I haven't come across very many myself, hit up some thrift stores lol.

don't listen to this guy, that converter you need to get will induce lag as it takes the signal from analog to digital.

Any CRT will do for the most part, search around a lil bit at thrift stores and find one with component cable inputs and a flat display for a better 480i or 480p!

The holy grail of smash TVs, if you wanna research it, are the Sony Tritons.(and some similar style TVs by other big brands.

Their is no LCD that come close to beating CRT's 500μs of lag, it's not just upscaling LCD's inherently just takes more time to refresh an image than CRT, "lagless" LCD's are just marketing bull****

There is a thread on the Melee forums discussing this, some monitors perform just as well if you take the time to set them up properly, also LCDtv response time at 480 native resolution should be pretty much unnoticible.

just grab a crt from goodwill for a dollar
That's what I did, but it depends on the area as far as price goes. My buddy is ~6 hours south of me and the TVs are like 10 - 15 bucks. Supply and demand and all that.

CRTs are such a breeze to buy compared to modern TVs it's unreal

I didn't rly think about it until recently, in which I wanted s/t with good enough response time while not looking completely ugly and lord is that a difficult task, if it fits both of those it's probably also a million bucks

on the flipside, the differences btwn CRTs are so tiny that it does not matter. like, at all. if there's a CRT that you can get, buy it. they're like 5 bucks if you look around, it's great

i'd keep one around, but the only place i can feasibly store one is in our outside storage closet (live in 1 bedroom apt with the gf. not so much room to just hold a crt around inside...) and the last one we put out there finally stopped making any sound at all : /

I think there used to be a list of lagless modern televisions you can use somewhere around here.

If your not going to be winning tournaments, you don't have to worry so much about the television being perfect.
