I've yet to play Smash 64 but I'll probably still pick Melee. It was my first and will always have a special place in heart but even today its a brilliant game that I can play for hours on end (even though I still kind of suck at it). After finally picking up Brawl earlier this year, I can finally understand what everyone meant by its "slower" gameplay. The game is just so boring and fighting feels tedious since your attacks are so slow and imprecise. Trying to land the most basic of combos is now pretty much impossible and many of the characters have been ruined.

I wish I could try out Project M but apparently there isn't a PAL version of the mod yet, so I'm screwed. I'm also hoping Smash 4 ends up being the best in the series.

Smash 64 is the best smash in my opinion, but if I love all the smash games, 64 is the one I play most of though
Edit: I have played Melee, Brawl, project M and super smash flash 2, just incase you thought I missed out on a smash game

I never did the whole competitive scene so I don't have the whole gameplay mechanic bias obsession thing that a lot of others have going on. So I'm gonna go with Brawl. Not only did it introduce my favourite Smash character (And basically depart that same character....) but the music was incredible, I'm a huuge suck for graphics so the subspace cutscenes were like crack to me, and the character designs really stuck out compared to the models of Melee (but obviously not as detailed and spectacular as SSB64's models). And I got hooked to start with 64 so that gets bonus points to boot
I'd go Brawl>64>Melee personally (blasphemous)

Lying about my country.
Overall, Melee has the best gameplay, but Brawl makes up for it thanks to the vast amount of content, and far, far less clone-y clones.

Sometimes, the larger variety simply makes the game stay fresh for a little bit longer, though I do go back to Melee a lot.

Also, even though I generally prefer Melee's gameplay, there's still things I think Brawl does better.

I like both games in their own ways, choosing a favorite is ****ing hard, as there's things about both games I like, and things about both games I dislike. It's one of the biggest reasons I'm so hyped for Smash 4 (beyond it being a new ****ing Smash, I mean) when they said they're aiming for a happy medium between both games... That's just perfect for me seeing how much I love both games.

As for Smash 64, I like it, it was a huge part of my childhood and I basically get high on nostalgia each time I play it, but both sequels are simply superior in every single way.

Project M? Wouldn't choose it as a favorite game, because yeah, it's not a game of it's own as it's simply a mod. It's like playing a board game with your own house rules, you just don't consider it a diffent, better game even if you do like it better and play it more often. But for what it's worth, I play it just as often as Melee and Brawl. For convenience, I got all three on Dolphin as separate isos so they're just a click away from eachother, I like rotating between all three every now and then.

I'm already sold on Super Smash Bros. 4 being my favorite. The roster and stages are incredible so far and I love all the changes we have seen.

Brawl, Melee then 64. So sm4sh will probably overtake Brawl as well. I really like the fact that Brawl was about mindgame & skill like the previous games but not so much purely mechanical skills.

Project M, by a longshot.
Melee
Brawl and 64 tied for third.

I can have fun with all 4 games (yes, I don't give a single **** about being "official", Project M is still a professional-quality Smash title), but I can't really take Brawl and 64 seriously anymore. Even though I started with Brawl, it just feels too weird now after playing the other games for a while. For 64, I just can't get past that oh-so-terrible controller.

I love Melee because Falco.

As for Smash 4, I predict that it might fall at second place, just ahead of Melee, but since the game isn't even out yet, I can't say anything for sure.

1. Smash 64, for nostalgia.
2. Melee, for Jiggs induced carnage.
3. Project M, for balance.
4. Brawl, for occasional funsies.

I would have to say Brawl is my favorite, with 64 coming in close second. In terms of content, Brawl had a ton! New characters, stages, a huge adventure mode with cutscenes and bunch of other stuff too! I still play it to this day. 64 was a big part of my childhood, as it is one of the first video games that I've ever played. I would always get excited when my brother puts in Smash 64 and we would constantly play together.

As for Melee, I never had as much memories with it than 64 or Brawl. Sure I had it, but I didn't have my Gamecube very long. (It was given away like half a year later) Never played Project M so I can't say anything about it.

However, I have a huge feeling that Smash 4 will become my most favorite Smash...

I personally can only see the reson why people hate on Brawl is because of some of the roster, and that it's a slow game compared to Melee. SSB4 is going to be pretty fast actually, if you looked at the footage of Sakurai playing SSB4.

Actually, I'd say that the roster for SSBB was probably one of the best aspects.

Subspace Emissary is one of the most fun things I ever did in Smash Bros. For that, Brawl has the upper hand.

But actually fighting? Melee. I also LOVED the mode where you saved screenshots of your characters!

Project M. Nope, don't care if it's a mod, Project M is my favorite Smash Bros.

SSB64. I hate defensive options and love combos. 12 characters are all you need if only Samus seems particularly disappointing.

Melee is second. Still playing both to this day. Hate Brawl and haven't gotten into PM, so I won't rank those.

As of now, Project M. Doesn't mean it won't change though if SSB4 will beat it for me.

While I agree that Melee is mechanically the best game in the series (I actually don't, SSB64 is the best game in the series in terms of mechanics), it is also my least favorite game in the franchise. It is not bad, in fact, it is a terrific game, but I don't like it as much as the original and Brawl. I had a blast playing SSB64 for a long time and Brawl is amazing, for the high amount of content and modes the game offer. It isn't exactly the best game for competitive purposes, but that doesn't really mean much to me. So, my favorite is the original game. I would love if SSB4 was very similar to the original in terms of mechanic. SSB64 + tons of characters = potentially the best game ever.

I don't count Project M. It is not even an official game. I tried to play it and I don't really see what all the hype is about (probably because I don't play Smash in a competitive way, but still).

Melee had the worst roster. Brawl and ssb4 have the best roster
WHAT?!

VS.

Now, please tell me, how is the Melee roster worse than the Super Smash Bros. 64 roster?

Or are you just comparing it to Brawl? In that case, I agree with you.

Smash 4 is my favorite Smash. I have not become bored with it as I have yet to play it (I have to alternate between 64, Melee, Brawl, and Project M so that I do not get burned out on one game).

1. Project M (if you consider it an option)
2. Brawl
3. SSB64

Haven't played any more than 5 Melee matches in my lifetime. I'm expecting Smash 4 to sit under or above PM, but it's obviously not out yet so...

I mostly like them all equally, I play all of them. If I had to choose though it would be brawl (out of the official games) because of Ike and Lucario. The gameplay of melee is better but it doesn't have a character I am particularly good with. Which is why I like Project M the most even if it isn't an official game. It has the speed of melee and the characters of Brawl plus Mewtwo and Roy. It also helps that Ike my favorite character doesn't suck in it. :D

Honestly. My favorite Smash is all of them :smirk:
No but seriously. I played Brawl the most but I love all of them. Even 64 which I barely played.

Melee because it's not mindnumbingly slow.

My favorite would probably be Melee, because I liked the stages the best, I like the opening the best, I loved how they made the character selection screen, and I can play as Roy and Mewtwo in the game. Brawl is a close second though.

I'd also never played Project M, so I might like that more than both Melee and Brawl. I should get around to getting it.

I have no favorite, but these are my favorite ASPECTS of each game

Smash64: My friend's older brother got me back into this in 2012 and now it's my brother, a few friends, and my friend's brother always play. We get really competitive with it and it can get funny because we get so good at it that it's downright hilarious. I actually play this one mainly and I'm best at this one haha.

Melee: Played this one a lot when I was a kid (same with 64). This one is also fun to play competitively (WITH FRIENDS) and can be funny since the game is so freaking fast. Also, you don't need to always use a smash attack to get a KO (like in Brawl) so that's another plus...like Smash64.

Brawl: It's not as fun to play now, but I really liked it when it first came out. Most of the time I'll play Smash64 or Melee if I want to play with my friends semi-competitively. The funnest part of Brawl is playing "Box matches" where my friends and I play on my custom stage that's just a big box with a tiny hole so we can get each other up to high %'s and fly around like crazy.

Hm, in order:

1. Brawl+
2. Project M
3. Brawl
4. Smash 64
5. Melee

Melee has the BEST intro imho.

Clones:
64, Wii U, or 3DS
Brawl
PM
Melee

I prefer less clones.

Controller scheme:
Brawl, Melee, and Wii U, PM (loved gamecube controller to death)
64
3DS

Gameplay:
Wii U hopefully
PM
Melee
Brawl
3DS
64

Good balancing:
Wii U and 3DS hopefully
PM
Melee
64
Brawl

I hate chain grabbing and/or overpowered fighters! Brawl is the worst.

Cinematic:
Brawl
Melee
64, 3DS, Wii U, PM

Dream roster (there are certain fighters I disliked and others I like):
Wii U and 3DS (so far so good)
64
PM
Brawl
Melee

Overalls? Will determine when 3DS and/or Wii U comes out. For now...
PM
Melee
64
Brawl

Gameplay is main concern after all.

The smash game that is my favorite is the one I can enjoy with people the most.

With the above criteria in mind.

Project M
Melee
Brawl
64

It was brawl for a very long time after switching from Melee. It was always good fun. However, I didn't want to take my Wii to a friends house because the last wii I took over there got broke. (still salty.) I decided to take the cube of indestructibleness and we played Melee.

The speed was ridiculously fast in comparison to 5 years of consistent brawl play. 2008 - 2013

We started playing that along with brawl and had a blast playing both. Eventually brawl started seeming boring because of the speed difference and we started playing melee. I got a bit too good for my friends and they were starting to enjoy it less because of the skill gap.

I browsed a different forum that talked about Brawl vs Melee and someone mentioned Project M. I dismissed it initially because I was super Anti modifications back then and I REALLY didn't want to lose another Wii. I looked into it eventually and me and my friend tried it out. It was just great. Marvelous even.

We had good fun discovering all the new things that had been added and what not just like a new smash brothers game, and the speed was good. Not as fast feeling as melee, but fast enough to where it wasn't too slow. Better character balance let my friends try out more characters without being offset as much by the skill gap. It's our current most played game but the skill gap is getting real since the more we play the better I get ;_;

Smash 4 will probably take it's place since that's what we will be playing mostly unless it ends up being bad. Unfortunately at this point, I don't think "smash 4" and "bad" can go in the same sentence unless the word "isn't" is in between them.

Personally though, I think project M and smash 4 will be even for me in terms of gameplay.
