What exactly causes so much lag?

I realize that you are connecting across the country over wifi but the lag is terrible when I'm even playing someone in the same state / region. What exactly is the big issue? When I play 360 lag exists, but its mainly with that one hosts individual connection, it seems like EVERY game on wifi brawl is laggy. What is the main cause? Does 360 just have a stronger connection?

Well I don't own a 360 so I wouldn't know.
Lag can be caused by someone downloading, dial-up connections, Nintendo's horrible wifi services and yeah that's all I got from experience. You can't really escape lag, but I have a friend with a perfect connection so I guess it just depends.

Your connection, their connection, and the distance between the players all come to mind. <3

Well yeah, it really just depends. I could have a friend that lives in Iceland and still have a perfect connection versus a friend that lives next door and can have a poor connection.

Wifi is forever frowned upon.

Might as well copy/paste...

Lag varies from person to person. It depends on:

Your internet connection
The other person's internet connection
Where you live
Where the other person lives
Whether you're downloading something or vice-versa
Time of day / Internet traffic (maybe, not sure)
And possibly other factors that I don't know of
Also, Brawl wifi is just horrible online in general. Don't be surprised that other games or consoles have better connections.

And Nintendo's servers are just crap in general. I wish they'd use what they did for Mario Kart Wii (I mean that wifi isn't stunning, but it's not NEARLY as awful as Brawl's...)

It's crappy, enough said >.> If it had MKW like servers it would be a bit better.

Lol yeah, Brawl was the first to have wifi on the Wii.
You'd think that it would be the BEST THING EVER!
But even Nintendo makes mistakes :urg: (either that or they just never cared. I mean, Sakurai just wanted to end the Smash Bros. series all together.)

Mr. Sakuai doesn't want another Smash.
The profit a new Smash would generate says we get another Smash.

If you're playing people in state: One or both connections are major garb, or the servers are really busy(Which normally leads to DCs)
If they're out of state: Same as above and\or distance.
People using the internet at the same time also has a minor or major role, depending on how many bytes need to be loaded on the page.
If you're on the same Wii: .___.
Hate lag? Melee.

Sakurai-san HATES Smash. Nothing will change his mind unless someone from Nintendo takes over and makes a new and hopefully better Smash game with great wifi. But for now, play what you got.

If this new Smash bros. game can stop the Melee > Brawl nonsense then i'm all for it.
But let's not get our hopes up...The people back at Nintendo are wackos :glare:

Thanks for the input guys, Idk why they can't improve it? Like send out updates or something, if it can be improved why won't they?

Plus I don't know anyone in person who plays smash.

<3 Great point. Also on Sakurai: Since you put Nintendo through legal hell obtaining Sonic, let's make 3/4 of his specials exactly the same. And to even off the roster, forget about shoo-ins like Isaac, Little Mac, Geno, Sukapon, Ray-01, and Animal Crossing Villager. Instead, make TWO Samus', TWO Links, and once again neglect a second character from F-Zero.

On topic: I only get lag at the start of a match. And then I taunt to convey that. And then it's all good :)

I said this before in another thread, but it's been 3 years since Brawl came out and if Nintendo hasn't updated it by now, they never will.

There are two primary reasons:

1) The servers for Brawl aren't that good. (Even Mario Kart DS, Nintendo's FIRST Wifi-enabled game, seem to has better servers than Brawl. >_>)

2) Brawl uses a less efficient method of transfering information, instead of running the game at full speed and just using the wifi for determining the opponent's actions and locations, it makes sure that EVERY frame of action is transferred between the players. Now you may be thinking, "why would they do something so stupid?". Well, there are two, powerful benefits for this more laggy method. The first, and most important one, is that there is ABSOLUTELY no way to warp in Brawl. (Warping tends to be a BIG problem in online games, here's an example, the car in front warped, taking out the guy that was two car lengths behind him) this is especially important because warping during combos [yes, Brawl combos], recoveries, item spawns, or just gameplay in general would be FAR worse than the lag we have. The other important reason is that without warping, replays are PERFECTLY recorded [on non-hacked stages], warping would result in severe discrepancies in the opponent's replays. Don't ask why they put a limit on the replays, it's been proven unnecessary by people that mod their wiis, so I have no clue why they placed that cap on in the first place.

That option is liable as well. For people like me, who can't really get out to tournaments regularly (or even at all), Online lag is just one of those things you overcome to your best extent, and deal with the rest.
Smash 64 servers are also superb in comparason.

Here's the the future. To our developers, we hope you'll make something decent out of the lagged-up scrubby mess that is Wi-Fi.

Today I played about 40 3-stock games with a friend. The lag was brutal. Even on the structurally static and simplistic stages like BF. Then I put my coin on Picto. The lag was fine. In 4 or so games, I experienced the same brutal lag twice. On non-picto stages the lag would hit 3 times a game. Coincidence?

Well, Mario Kart Wii's and Brawl's Wifi are different. In MKW you may notice some players jump from place to place because the connection wasn't right. Whereas in brawl, you can't have players teleporting as it's a fighting game, where you really need to focus on the opponent. So, it lags because Wifi is trying to find a secure connection before going onto the next frame.

: )

I'm testing the correlation between each legal stage, and the resulting lag. Also time limit vs. no time limit. Results soon.

What? Brawl isn't the first wi-fi game on the Wii. Where'd you get that?

She wasn't too specific, but with the given information, i'm pretty sure she was referring to first Wi-Fi Smash Brothers game on the Wii console.
(Smash 64 on Project64k i believe may have been released prior to Brawl, but nonetheless, Brawl was the first on the Wii.)

I can't even connect to Brawl wi-fi as of now, I always get the error number 84620, whatever that is ;_;

I really wish Nintendo fixes the problems soon, though i doubt it -_-

I think my connection is just flat out bad since almost everyone tells me I lag.

But I just ignore them because when I come to wifi, I'm expecting some delay.

I think what causes so much lagging is some persons connection. My connection was bad one day and I played online making everyones experience that day terriable lol :D
