What does Melee have that makes it so great?

are you kidding me? less than 50% of the cast is viable in tournament. the game is only "balanced" among the top 6 or 7 characters, with 3 or 4 others being able to keep up kinda.
I disagree with you. Haven't you ever watched Gimpyfish? He is pretty good with Bowser and can compete with higher tier characters. I also believe that I am really good with Roy even though he is also in the lower tiers. The reason that you see so many pros using higher tier characters is because there is money on the line and they know how amazing the high tier characters are. In other words they are just taking a safer bet.

Melee has fast paced gameplay, combos, and it's easy to gimp, that's what makes Melee so great for me. But I must admit, I play both Brawl and Melee and love them both because of how different there are.

havent ever played a more balanced fighting game in my life TBH, and being top tier in ANY game does not mean that charachter is better then mid / low tier, all that means is that top tier charachters are more developed and used ,any one has infinite potential anyways, ive seen cosmos beat darkrain and pc chris.. so i dont wanan hear it.

also i agree with divno in reference to the best character and worst character comparison, thats present in EVERY game, but the fact that every charachter in melee has the same base tech skill, it puts it abv every game imo atleast.

You don't seem to understand that player performance in tournament at a high level is largely based on the player, and only secondarily on the character. Taj doesn't do well because Mewtwo's a good character, he does well because Taj is a good player. Cosmo vs. Darkrain is Cosmo vs. Darkrain, not just Zelda vs. Captain Falcon.
An example of a player doing well with a character doesn't necessarily mean that the character is good, especially when you consider the fact that there are exponentially more examples of players doing well with Top/High tier characters than with others. When you look at the frame data and hitboxes, it's just obvious that the bottom half of the tier list are there for a reason.

His objection wasn't really whether the low tiers are good or not - it's whether the low tiers are viable or not. Gimpyfish, Taj, Neo, AXE and many others are proof that it's possible to do at least sort of well in big tournaments with low tier characters.

So yeah I wouldn't exactly say they're viable, but on the other hand they (or at least some of them) aren't as hopeless as some people make it seem.

I misunderstood you, then. At first you said it was the most balanced game. Not fighting game.
