Based on evolution, it is the egg. Though, if you're considering from the primordial ooze, and the first thing to lay and egg or not, then it would be the "chicken" (its long ancestor) since it would be born in a form that is not from an egg.

Well, technically, once the genetically "perfect" chicken is born, it came from the egg.

It doesnt quite work like that, the chickens of today are different than the chickens of thousands of years ago. What determines an actual species is its ability to create fertile offspring, obviously this only works with another animal that is of the same species, but because of genetic drift over time, the oldest chicken that modern chickens could breed with, could still breed with the "chickens" that produced it, but it is by definition of species still a chicken. So really neither the chicken or the egg comes into existence first, because the line between species is rather blurred when you are looking at evolutionary ancestry.

Both are delicious, so it doesn't matter.

Eggs have been around longer than the modern chicken has, so I'm inclined to say the egg.

Someone told me that this question is a basis of a religion debate.

The chicken coming first is creation in which it seems to implies that God created animals in their adult stages.

The egg coming first is evolution which implies that a generation of birds laid eggs that hatched into a chickens.

If birds laid the alleged eggs then wouldn't the birds have existed before the egg? Put that in yo pipe and smoke it. lol.

It was most certainly the chicken.
