As a forward, I am not a classically trained artist. I have yet to take any classes, but hope to, and would like to someday be a commissioned artist. Almost everything I am posting is in very early 'WIP' stages.

Decided to make a deviant art page: http://marccasper.deviantart.com/

Below are the images VVV

Small WIP update on the batman image. decided to mess around and make it look old time comicbooky.

and help one is willing to give, I am more than willing to accept. Specifically if it is about coloring, as digital art in general, i am a super nub at.

Another update on the batman image.

I am going harddddddd on making it look like 80's comic style.

well, that and the deathly emaciated grotesque look

first the 80's version, second is the regular version

My eyes are tired, and drawing someone who is suppose to be skeletal is messing with my idea of anatomy, is this resize of the skull better?

Yeah, anatomy is a pain. It will always be a pain, for the rest of forever.

I think you've done a good job here though so far. I might be wrong but I think the proportion of the head to the shoulders was more accurate in the 2nd/3rd version, it looks kind of small in the latest one.

As far as coloring, the first thing I always do is make sure I know where the light source is, I think you've got that down though. Once that's figured out, sometimes the best thing to do is just go nuts and see what looks good afterward, lol. There are so many techniques and things you can do as far as coloring. I would say in this case use those older looking comics as a reference since that's what you seem to be going for.

I wanna see the whole thing colored in soon.

thanks for the input, to be honest I thought the 2nd/3rd version looked more accurate as well, it is just weird since he has more or less no muscle, and is pretty much just a skeleton.

Makes it easier for me since the original I have is still the 2nd/3rd version.

I am such a n00b when it comes to coloring something on the computer, lol. I am mostly just going to try new things ( which is bound to happen since I am new to this ). I figured no matter what, in a few years this will look so nubbish to me no matter what, hah.I appreciate the comments a whole lot ♥

double post because i'm a scrub

So here is an obviously scaled down version. I still have to clean up a few things, the golden brooch near the center of his color bones, etc., but you get the basic picture. What I need serious help with is a background. I've tried a couple things just off the top of my head; nothing works.

You guys have any ideas, tutorials for basic, yet effective backgrounds, etc. maybe it is just because I EXPECT batman to be in the dark, but the white is really hurting my eyes, and I feel like it takes away from the picture.

head back to original size <3, thanks once again for the input neon ness

OMG, and thank you neous, somehow my dumb *** missed your post, lol.

haha, thanks geist!

Finished the little details. Now going to put it on hold until i figure out what to do for a background. The first link below is the ( unfortunately smaller ) semi-finished version.

I am now working on my next picture, ROBIN! I am much more excited for this one than the batman one, as I did not feel confident with the batman sketch, where I actually quite like the rough draft i came up for robin, hehehe

No no. lol. I "approve" of batman (being blue like candy is nice... i mean... who doesnt like blue candy??). I "approve" of Robin as well, its just that his pelvic area lookin MAD WEAK.

also, i saw the colored robin wip in the kpop thread, the facial proportions look a bit off, maybe too small for his head. i suggest finding a good reference picture,

though it may be hard to find one with the desired head position/tilt along with the rest of the pose, you can always just find multiple references.

thanks for the input man! Yeah I am giving my eyes a night's rest from the piece so that I can look at it a bit more objectively. Will grab a few references, and just keep messing with proportions until i get it looking right

WIP update. Taking forever because This is all guess work still at this point. Been tying to look MUCH closer at how many of the quite successful digital artists color, and how a lot of the comic artists shade/color.

Still a giant pain.

Good news for my art career though, I have gotten 3 commissions ( 1 cool green lantern tattoo design, and two character mockups from a couple of the guys in my D&D group ), and possibly one more. I am very happy needless to say. Just need to keep churning out art until someone BIG notices. Going to be putting all of my future sketches to a background, save for the character mockups.

Rather flat, but from what I have seen ( and I can honestly say I have been looking A LOT, and doing a lot of research ) Most artists struggle with looking really flat when they start coloring digitally.

If anyone has tips/tutorials/anything on coloring I will gladdly accept help. I am using opencanvas 4.5, if that matters.

Still haven't fixed robins face***

Nice, happy to hear you're picking up commissions already.

I know it's not done yet so my only real advice is about his head. It's going straight up and down, but looking at the angle of his spine it feels like it should be tilted right a little more.

As far as coloring, just remember you can get really creative. If you want to make a shadow on something red for instance, you don't have to just use a darker shade of the same red. You can use a dark magenta/violet for the shadow. By the same token, a red highlight can be an orange/yellow tone, instead of just a light red. When done well this creates an analogous scheme and looks really cool.

This tutorial really helps with understanding how color works. http://color-me-club.deviantart.com/gallery/25148823#/d31xj5t

Also, nothing big, but could you try to cut down on the multiposting? It's not a huge deal, it's just kind of something to be avoided.

thanks for all the tips about coloring, will make sure to take a look at the guide you linked. Will also mess around more with head poses, since I have to mess with the face anyway, hehe.

Will try not to double post anymore >.>
