Weird Moves: The Spin Dash

Welcome to Weird Moves, a series of threads about moves I want to discuss because of how weird they are, and I want to talk about...

The Spin Dash!

What makes this move weird is that Sonic has two of them: Side Special and Down Special. While I believe both have their uses, the Side Special version is worse. I never use it because it never seems to do anything.

What's the purpose of the Side Special version? That's what I'd like to know.

It can be used for the spinshot technique to quickly traverse the stage. Otherwise nothing comes to mind though since I only recently started playing Sonic.
