With the new forums recently being added, and the fact that people are probably tired of asking the same questions over and over again, I thought it might be good to get some sort of primary Brawl hacking FAQ thread going. I can't do this alone though, you guys can help with this. If there are existing questions I haven't phrased well enough or questions with blank answers, tell me what to put as a correct answer and if it's good, I'll put it as the answer. If there are questions I haven't put that may be good for the FAQ thread, post them here!

[collapse=Q: I have an SDHC card, an SD card over 3GB.]Be mindful that SDHC cards work in Homebrew Channel and Gecko OS because they were programmed to support it, but Brawl doesn't.

Brawl wasn't programmed with SDHC in mind, so while the codes will apply, things such as Brawl+, textures, PSAs and that stuff will NOT work unless you get a 2GB or lower SD card.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: What is the Game ID?]RSBE01 for consoles in North and South America (NTSC-U),

RSBP01 for consoles in Europe/Australia (PAL),

RSBJ01 for consoles in Japan (NTSC-J).

Credit to luigiman1928 for PAL and Japan.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: How do I install Texture Hacks?]
Phantom Wings has granted us a great ability, to be able to edit Brawl's textures without the need of burning a disc! It took him an arduous amount of work to do it and I honestly think he deserves a lot of credit so, once again, thanks Phantom Wings!

Guide:

You're going to need a few things before doing any of this:

The latest version of Gecko OS
An SD Card
The Homebrew Channel
An SD Card Reader
Code Manager

Once you have all the necessities here's what you need to do:

1. Put Gecko OS (once unzipped) into a folder in your SD Card called "apps" (should be in the root of the card) and drop the Gecko OS folder into there (if it is not a folder and just three files, create one and put the three files in there).

2. Create a folder called "codes" in your SD Card (outside of the apps folder you created earlier).

3. Open code manager and get one of the codes below (based on your region, PAL, NTSC, or NTSC-J) and set up your .gct (If you don't know how to do this, just ask someone in the thread, I'm sure they can help! Or you can just create a text file and import it into the code manager).

4. Save the .gct as "RSBE01.gct" and save it to the codes folder. You're set now with the codes. (If you are PAL, call it "RSBP01.gct", and NTSC-J call it "RSBJ01").

5. Now here's the tricky part everyone seems to have trouble with understanding. It is not very hard to understand at all, read carefully. Make the following directory (meaning folders) in your SD Card:

NTSC-U: private/wii/app/RSBE/pf/fighter
PAL: private/wii/app/RSBP/pf/fighter
NTSC-J: private/wii/app/RSBJ/pf/fighter

Now, inside fighter you would create a specific folder for each character based on how their names are stored on the disc, the list for that is below.

Code:
Captain Falcon:	captain
King Dedede:	dedede
Diddy Kong:	diddy
Donkey Kong:	donkey
Falco: falco
Fox: fox
Mr. Game & Watch:gamewatch
Ganondorf:	ganon
GIGA Bowser:	gkoopa
Ike: ike
Kirby: kirby
Bowser: koopa
Link: link
Lucario:	lucario
Lucas: lucas
Luigi: luigi
Mario: mario
Marth: marth
Meta Knight:	metaknight
Ness: ness
Peach: peach
Pikachu:	pikachu
Captain Olimar:	pikmin
Pit: pit
Ivysaur:	pokefushigisou
Charizard:	pokelizardon
PokÈmon Trainer:poketrainer
Squirtle:	pokezenigame
Ice Climbers:	popo
Jigglypuff:	purin
R.O.B.: robot
Samus: samus
Sheik: sheik
Snake: snake
Sonic: sonic
Zero Suit Samus:szerosuit
Toon Link:	toonlink
Wario: wario
Warioman:	warioman
Wolf: wolf
Yoshi: yoshi
Zelda: zelda
Green Alloy:	zakoball
Yellow Alloy:	zakochild
Blue Alloy:	zakogirl
Red Alloy: zakoboy
So, a directory for Captain Falcon would look like this: private/wii/app/RSBE/pf/fighter/captain

6. Once you have all the folders you want for the characters you want textures for, visit a few texture sites (listed below) to grab cool textures you like (this list will likely grow over time):

Stack Smash
Kitty Corp.

7. Once you have the textures you want, you need to name the texture file the color you want to replace. Each number represents a color of that character, so, 00 = default, 01 = first color, 02 = second color and so on. Now, the order of the colors can be quite confusing for each character so here is a convenient list of that below.

Code:

Here's an example of what a Captain Falcon texture file would be named if it were replacing his 01 color: FitCaptain01.pcs

And here's what the directory would look like with that finally included: private/wii/app/RSBE/pf/fighter/captain/FitCaptain01.pcs

Every character does NOT need their .pac file but, you need to name the .pac file the same way you named the .pcs file except without the .pcs extension (just the .pac extension instead) so Captain Falcon's .pac file would look like this: FitCaptain01.pac (of his first color, you need to change the number according to what you set it to for the .pcs, this is merely an example, it will not always be 01). The characters who DO need their .pac files are below:

Code:
Samus/ZSS
Zelda/Sheik
PT
Bowser
Wario
.pac files are mostly used for the other modes outside of versus modes, so, you do not need them if they are not the characters above. The reason why the characters above need them are for their transformations, otherwise, the textures get lost in the sea of the abyss when you transform or switch (PT). Also, for ZSS, you may need to use a CSS code with her to get her to work better (as her textures need to be loaded from the CSS if you are using v 1.1).

8. If your textures did not work, make sure your directory is set up accordingly or you didn't mess up on the color choice, check EVERY color if you really don't know which one you put it on. The codes DO work, you're just doing something wrong.

9. Otherwise, you have done it! Congratulations! You have successfully put textures on your Wii! These textures are in no way permanent, you have to load the codes each time you want access to them and NOBODY WILL SEE THEM ONLINE UNLESS THEY HAVE THE SAME CODES ON AS YOU AND THE SAME TEXTURES AS YOU! Also, Gecko OS has a 256 line limit (due to the Wii's RAM limit) so please try not to add anymore codes than that after the texture codes have been applied. Textures also do not show up in replays if you watch them without the codes on (in other words, the replays do not store texture data). However, Snapshots DO save the textures even without the codes on (this is obvious) so you can show off to your friends that you can do texture hacking now!

Stage Texture Guide

Steps 1-4 from the character texture guide still apply so skipping to Step 5.

5. Make the following directory: private>wii>app>RSBE>pf>stage>melee

6. Your texture needs to be named like this: STG[insert name here].pcs

7. Load up Brawl through Gecko OS and you should be good to go. If you are having any problems, ask questions in this thread.

How to Set Up Your Own GCT

By
SymphonicSage12

This guide will tell you how to make a text file of the codes you want for brawl, and then turn it into a GCT.

I'll first do a guide for the cheatmanager on Homebrew, and then one on the pc cheat manager.
But first, there will be a couple things you'll need:

NEEDED MATERIALS:

1.Notepad, Notepad++, or any program that can save text as a txt file

2.The Homebrew Channel, the latest version of the Homebrew browser, and the latest version of the Cheatmanager on the Homebrew Channel (the one with a green swishy logo, not WiiCm.)

3. Gecko OS on the Homebrew browser. v1.9.0.1 or later.

4.An SD Card (at least 1GB, don't go over 2GB), and an SD card reader/computer that can read SD cards

5.The codes you want, obviously

6.An official copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This is slightly obvious as well.

I have downloads for some of these materials at the bottom of the page.

Okay, so here are the steps:

Step 1. Open your text editing program (I use Notepad++), and make a new file.

Step 2. At the top of it, type the game ID for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Since I am in the U.S,
it is RSBE01 for me. For PAL, it's RSBP01. For Japan, it's RSBJ01.

Step 3. On the line right underneath that, type "Super Smash Bros Brawl" and then in parentheses right next to that
type (US) (PAL) or (JPN).

Step 4. Skip a line, and then type the title of your codeset. This can really be anything you want.
For example, "Brawlplusery Codeset v5.0 Beta"

Now is the time for the codes.

Step 5. Skip a line after the title, and type the category of codes in the section you want. This is optional,
but helps to organize your codes. What I mean by this is, for example, "Wii RD Codes" or "Cosmetic Stuff." If
you did this, now you need to skip a line after the category title and then put the code in.

Step 5 v2: Skip a line after the title of the codeset, and then put the code in.

NOTE: All codes need a title the line before the code. For example, you can't just put XXXXYYYY XYXYXYXY in the text file. You need a title for it
the line before, like so:

Unrestricted Camera (made by Person X) (x amount of lines)
XXXXYYYY XYXYXYXY

^^^^ The above code is simply an example.

Step 6. Now that you have all your codes formatted correctly, you need to save the text file.
Since this is brawl+, name it RSBE01 (or RSBP01 or whatever, depending on your region).

Step 7. Create a folder on the root of your SD card called "txtcodes" . Put the RSBE01 text file
you just saved into here. Don't put anything else in here just to be safe.

Step 8. Load up the homebrew channel, and load up the Cheatmanager. press a on the wiimote to load up the text file.

Step 9. Press the plus button on the codes you want to activate. Once you're done selecting, Press 1 to generate the gct file.

NOTE 2: Makes sure you have a "codes" folder on the root of your sd card. This is where the gct that is generated will go to.

Load up Gecko OS on homebrew, and enjoy!

PC CODE MANAGER GUIDE:

Step 1. Get the text file ready in the same way as the first manager. Only this time, you need a code manager
for the computer. You can find the download to it in the downloads and resources section.

Step 2. Open the code manager, and select to open a text file; Open the one you made.

Step 3. Check the box on the left for each code you want activated. Once you're done selecting,
click "Export to GCT", and the gct should appear in the codes folder on the root of your SD card.

Load up Homebrew, and then Gecko OS, and enjoy! :)

[collapse=Q: Where can I find the files on a Brawl disc?]See this thread: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=238697[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: There is a 256 line code limit. How do I fix that?]Make a new file in the root of your SD card and name it "gameconfig.txt" (without quotes). Put this in it:
Code:
RSB?01:
codeliststart = 80570000
codelistend = 80580000
poke(800042B8, 60000000)
pokeifequal(803E9930, 4BFECA1D, 803E9930, 60000000)
pokeifequal(803E99A8, 4BFECA1D, 803E99A8, 60000000)
pokeifequal(803E9D5C, 4BFECA1D, 803E9D5C, 60000000)
Save it, run Gecko OS, and that error should go away.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: Gecko OS freezes at "SD Codes Found. Applying..." What do I do?]Make sure you aren't using a bad code, like one that hasn't been tested, or one that may be meant for another region (like using a PAL code in an NTSC Wii).[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: How do I play on SSE stages?]You'll find Jack Kieser's SSE listing at: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=254125

They will only work on two stages (unless you use Dantarion's Alternate Stage Loader, or Phantom Wings's Custom SSS code). The two stages they will only work on are the Online Training room (where you'd name the SSE stage "STGONLINETRAINING.pac" and put it in the \pf\stage\melee\ folder), or Temple ("STGDXSHRINE.pac" in \pf\stage\melee\). Note that you can't put SSE stages on one or the other stage...they were made to replace only 1 specific stage in mind.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: Are there ever going to be matches that have more than 4 players?]No, the code is extremely buggy and will never be possible due to Brawl's programming.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: My match desynchs (people go in random places). What's going on?]Your opponents and yourself must have the same codes on. If you put on a silly code like "Infinite Smash Balls", and your opponent is running Brawl through the disc channel, both of you will see opposite things.

For Brawl+, check to see that you have the same Buffer (Handicap) on.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: What if I want to have multiplayer on Basic Brawl/Team Battle?]Try these codes:

Code:
WITH ANYONE - Basic Brawl Multiplayer [Phantom Wings]
4A000000 90180B44
38000000 00FF1000
10000000 0000000C
*Must Be Host. You must also start the Waiting Room before someone else joins (kinda like having someone join your game instead of you joining theirs).

WITH ANYONE - Team Battle Multiplayer [Phantom Wings & Jose Gallardo]
4A000000 90180B44
38000000 00FF1100
10000000 0000000C
*Works without being the host, but the same rule applies for starting the Waiting Room before others join (have them join while you are in the waiting room).
Neither one or the other can be on at the same time, however.[/collapse]

[collapse=Q: Gecko OS keeps saying "No DVD found". Whats going on?]Your Wii DVD laser may be dying out. Either sending it in to Nintendo or getting their Wii Lens Cleaning Kit may fix this.

Check to make sure you aren't running a backup DVD-R in Gecko OS, as Gecko OS is not a backup launcher.

Alternatively, there are methods of loading Brawl from a USB drive, but this is not the site to ask how to do it.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: Are custom sound effects possible yet?]Eventually they will...but no.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: My custom music keeps being garblish and staticy. How do I fix this?]Defrag your SD card.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: I want to update to the latest Wii version/latest Wii Shop Channel, but don't want to go through Nintendo. What do I do?]If you want to safely update to the latest Wii menu (as of this post, 4.2) through Homebrew, there is a safe updater you can run through Homebrew Channel. This makes sure you can update effectively without the risk of bricking your Wii through Nintendo's boot2 update, as well as keep any custom IOS's you may have.

If you only want to update to the latest Wii Shop Channel to buy some Virtual Console games or Wiiware, I recommend using a homebrew application named WiiSCU to download it. As always, use Google.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: My screen freezes when I go to the Character Select Screen. How do I fix this?]Check to make sure you don't have a bad "common5.pac" (located in \RSBE\pf\system\), or a bad "sc_selcharacter.pac" (located in \RSBE\pfmenu2\). If you aren't sure, backup those files and delete them off of the SD card and try again.

Alternatively, if it's not because of those two files, it may be a certain code you may have enabled.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: My screen freezes when I go to the Stage Select Screen. How do I fix this?]This is a common problem with Brawl+ and Balanced Brawl...there is usually a "st_080809_xxxxx.bin" file (for Balanced Brawl) or "st_exploit.bin" (for Brawl+ without Homebrew) you may have to get rid of to stop this. Alternatively, if you're trying to play Balanced Brawl or Brawl+ without Homebrew and experience lock-ups at the Stage Select screen, redownload your GCT file and try again.

If it's not because of those stage files, it may be a certain code you may have enabled.[/collapse]
[collapse=Q: Gecko OS gives me a "Exception (DSI) occurred!" What do I do?]The most common cause is one code you may have on that Gecko OS can't read, and will fault an error.

Other times, you may be running Gecko OS 1.9.2, 1.9.2b, 1.9.3 or 1.9.3b. Try searching Google for Gecko OS 1.9.1, that may solve your problem.[/collapse]

Thanks!

Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue replace the second set of Falcon, Mario, Kirby, and Zelda portaits, respectively.

Q: How do I install PSAs?
The same way you do a texture, just without the ## at the end.

Q: Are there ever going to be matches that have more than 4 players?
No, the code is extremely buggy and will never be possible due to Brawl's programming. ;)

Q: Are custom sound effects possible yet?
Not really, no.
