I'll be posting matches from MATTS!' tournaments (main thread and End's Fate) here that I've recorded and decided to produce and upload. I encourage others to do the same.

These were all recorded with FRAPS (lol 4GB/minute) and encoded with VirtualDub using the XviD MPEG-4 Codec. 30x smaller size, hardly noticeable quality drop FTW.

Ness Dittos:
A$ Vs. ImNotPro
Both of us have sucky DJC control. :p Pretty good matches though. 1 frame of delay.

A$ Vs. Mahie
Mahie admits that Ness is not one of his stronger characters. I generally have difficulty facing his Fox. 4 frames of delay.

DemonicInfluence,

I watched both sets of matches and the first and second set you were awesome as fox, you taught me a new combo, which i plan to use in the future (the jab, to up smash)... great move. And you were also a very good falcon, fast and determined.

The second set, Pika vs. Kirby, i though you had him, the only thing i would add against a pika/kirby battle is some f-airs, i also thought you fought him on the ground a little too much, kirby has better reach on the ground then pika.

When you played as jiggles, i though you were very good, but i think the match ups were not very good for you, mario and kirby are hard to beat as jiggles cuz they are not as easlily put into combo's

Thats just my opinion, i thought you were very good and i am not looking forward to playing you in the future :)

Thanks for your nice comments.
For the pika vs. kirby match, i feel like fair has pretty bad reach and so is probably too risky.
The Jiggly matchups have a little advantage to their side, but it's not that bad. Nintendude is just too good hahaha.

I hope to also play you :p

Nice guys. Keep more Vids coming. As much as you can. If it lags when you record, then don't record to respect you and your opponent during the match. You can pretty much p2p and record game inputs like mupen does and pj64. But if you do it on server and you can record with a screen recorder and it doesn't lag, then do so. Thanks.

As of this post, Youtube has not fully processed them all, so you may have to wait to watch them in 1080p (or even watch them at all).

By the way, I was thinking about adding a commentary in the form of annotations. Stuff like pointing out mistakes, different lines that could've been taken, etc. Would there be interest in that?

it could be interesting to view your thought process during a match and to see what you think you could have done better.

A$, I've got a few questions, if you would, on how to record.

Do you have the full version of FRAPS? I downloaded FRAPS, VirtualDub, and the xvid codec (but I'm not really sure what that does or how to use it). I went into playback mode on the kaillera client and played back one of the short videos I recorded with FRAPS (60 fps), even though it's the unregistered version of FRAPS. It is slow, just as I'd thought it would be. Then, is the .avi file it creates supposed to be opened up with VirtualDub? If so, how do you get it to run at full speed like you did? I did open the .avi I created onto VirtualDub, but I have no idea what to do from there.
I am running Windows Vista 32-bit.

Thanks!

Here's how I produce my videos:
  1. Check "Record game" box in P2P client.
  2. Play matches.
  3. After matches are completed, later replay (using the recording) on my TV using these settings in PJ64K (using fullscreen mode):

And with these FRAPS settings (registered, version 2.9.9):

  4. FRAPS outputs the video in 4GB chunks. 4GB = ~1:10
  5. After FRAPS has recorded all the matches, exit out of PJ64K and FRAPS, and open VirtualDub.
  6. Combine all the video files that FRAPS created into a big one (go to File -> Open Video File for the first file, then File-> Append AVI Segment for all the ones after that. MAKE SURE to do them in order.
  7. Go to Video -> Compression... to select the codec you want to use to encode the video. Like I said, I used XviD MPEG-4 Codec to do mine, with the default settings (I don't know what 90% of the options did myself). Since I've had some video problems (nothing to do with SSB) lately, I've switched to CCCP and don't have the XviD codec anymore, so I guess I'll be using something else next time I make videos. IIRC, the output video bitrate was about 9000kbps. If you're recording at a lower resolution (mine is 1920x1080), then your bitrate won't have to be as high.
  8. Use the slider at the bottom to select the portion of the video that is the first recorded match (or the second, or third, etc.).
  9. Go to File -> Save as AVI and choose a final destination for the video. This will then start the encoding process for that selected portion.
  10. Wait long *** time for the video to encode. It takes on average about 45 minutes for me per match. The settings you choose and the speed of your computer will affect how long the encoding takes. Average final product file size per match for me is about 400MB.
  11. Repeat steps 8-10 for the other matches.
  12. Upload final product to Youtube.

For reference, here are my relevant computer stats:
Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate
Core 2 Quad Q9450 (4 cores @ 2.66Ghz)
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon 4870 2GB (Driver v10.2)

As an aside: I have the P2P recording of the matches I played with Nintendude for the Ends Fate tournament. I don't want to look like a douchebag by only uploading sets where I win, but, in all honesty, I don't think the matches were interesting at all. So, if you guys really want me to, I'll produce and upload them. Otherwise, I'm not going to bother.

Moogle I got a question, how long does it take for you to record at that resolution, and what fps does the video get recorded at? I've never tried recording at such high resolutions, but I just tried recording at 1680x1050 (it's the native res of my monitor and it's the highest it'll let me go) and not only is it taking a ridiculously long time, but the fps of the video ends up ridiculously low like 10. I have:

  • GTX 260
  • Q9650 (4 cores @ 3.0 ghz)
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • windows 7 64 bit

It runs at 60fps for me, so the time it takes FRAPS to record = the match time. I'm not sure what the cause is for people having these problems.

I was thinking, because of the huge output file size, perhaps it's the speed of the hard drive that's slowing it down (I have a 10K RPM drive), but there's no reason that it should end up being as low as 10fps, especially at a lower resolution.

My hard drive goes at 7200 RPM, is that slow enough to cause that kind of lag? I also tried recording with rice video plugin and 3d8, both were slow as hell. Looks like I'll have to stick to some 720p-ish resolution if the hard drive really is what's slowing me down.

Also, why do you record in a 16:9 ratio? Wouldn't that just screw it up by making everything stretched? (at least, it did that on mine)

The difference between 10K and 7.2K is not so significant so that it should be slowing down to 1/6th the speed (at a lower resolution nonetheless). It's possible that, since the hard drive is reaching its limit, FRAPS has some kind of bug that makes it slow down immensely when it can't right at the speed that it's supposed to, but, I dunno, computers don't usually work that way. :p

I'm a newb to this stuff anyway, you should ask on their forums. I kind of regret buying my 10K HDD overall, but that's a different matter all together.

16:9 is the ratio that 1920x1080 is. I guess it does stretch it out, but I don't really notice it in SSB. My primary monitor (i.e. not the TV I use for recording) goes up to 1600x1200, so I could record with that to get the highest 4:3 resolution. I'm not sure what would be optimal, or what Youtube's restrictions are. There should be a 1080p for fullscreen. :p

I'm pretty sure recording in 1920x1080 does stretch it horizontally since it's a 16:9 ratio, and I think most people would probably notice. Youtube does support 1080p but I don't know how it handles videos with resolutions that aren't 720p or 1080p exactly, but I'm not sure what the requirements are for it to give the option to watch a video in 1080p. (I'm guessing anything higher than 720p gets a 1080p option).

I dont think 1080 resolution is needed for ssb64 videos xD
something like 800x600 is more than enough imo
