Thanks for coming to my little talk entitled “Version Burden.” If you would, please take out and look at your Super Smash Brother’s Melee GameCube disks at this time. If you look closely on the back, you’ll be able to determine what version of Smash you have by the model number. It should say something like DOL-GALE-0-?? USA. Would all the zeros please step over to this area. Ones over here. And the rest of you gather on that end.”

We are different. Though we all look like smashers, we play with different versions of the game. This is very dangerous. There are a myriad of tiny alterations between the versions of Smash. What if someone playing version.0 fights a person playing version.2 and loses because he would be unable to perform Link’s super jump on Final Destination? This is unacceptable. This is why we at the Competitive Community Union have decided to have separate tournaments for each version just to keep everything fair.

You may be thinking to yourself, ‘Where are my Ninhonjin tomodachi’s?’ I’ll tell you where. Your Japanese friends are in another room. We are not allowed to play with them. Just think of all the differences that exist between a Japanese version of the game and our version. I shouldn’t have to remind you of the horrors of the PAL release. May 24, 2002 will forever be a dark day for Smash. Before the release to the Europeans, someone decided to go back and “tweak” the game a bit. Some characters are heavier. Some are lighter. Fox, Marth, and Shiek have been weakened. Kirby was made STRONGER! I found a list of changes here.

Ok. Now to get serious. There are differences between our versions of smash, but they’re so tiny that we don’t bother to pay attention to them at tournaments. Between all the versions, the game is still 99% consistent. If the competitive community complained about that 1%, then we really would have a problem

But the differences in the PAL version of the game bring up some interesting points. From reading the list, it looks like they tried to tone down the tiers by helping out the low tiers. None of the changes were too significant, but the effort is worth noting.

Why change the game at all? Wasn’t it doing well in Japan and America? Why go back and tweak such tiny details? Someone out there is clearly concerned with the game’s balance. Someone out there knows the tier list, and tried to make things more fair for everyone. Someone out there deserves a round of applause. Go ahead and clap. I’ll wait.

If this person (or his ideas) are still present in Brawl there are only a few possibilities. If the game manages to get online support, all the versions of the game have to be the same. We can’t have different things happening in each player’s Wii. Also, instead of tweaking future versions of the game, they might be able to have downloadable updates. To play the game online, you would have to have the most current update. In this way, most players would be playing with the updated version. The file size for the update would be smaller than small. Seriously, it would only be a few lines of code that say, “Adjust the power on some of these attacks NOW!” (I gave the code a little attitude.)

With a world wide release (or anything close) this is quite a logical possibility.
