Everyone loves checking in on the results of Japanese tournaments because they simply do not make any sense. Even for Japanese tournaments, Umebura 24 had some of the craziest results yet. Many people try to theorize that Japanese rulesets lead to an overabundance of variance but, the truth is, Japan's metagame gives us a preview of what Smash 4 in the 1.1.6 era will look like around the world in the near future. Once the other regions have as high of an average player skill level as in Japan it will become clear that in 1.1.6, everyone is a threat.
Once Round 3 of Winners started the tournament looked extremely different than originally predicted. Many of the world's strongest players had already been sent to Losers including @Kameme, @Kirihara, @Taiheita, @Sigma, @Nyanko, @KEN, @Takera, @Atelier, and more. Soon after, more well-known players such as @Nietono, @YOC, and @Rain failed to make it to Top 8. Umebura 24 showed off Smash 4's character diversity by having another Top 8 with no character overlap, but unlike EVO this Top 8 is like nothing we have seen before.
Umebura 24's Top 8 (translated bracket, provided by @juddy):
1st Pichi (Captain Falcon; Kanto)
2nd T (Link; Kanto)
3rd Tsu (Lucario; Kanto)
4th Choco (Zero Suit Samus; Kanto)
5th Umeki (Peach; Kanto)
5th KEN (Sonic; Kanto)
7th Hikari (Mario; Kanto)
7th Yui (Fox; Kanto)
Everyone gets ready for Top 4 and Umebura S.A.T.'s big announcement.
That is not all Umebura 24 had for everyone who attended and tuned into the stream. Just before beginning Top 4, Umebura staff announced to everyone that their Second Anniversary Tournament (Umebura S.A.T.) would be featuring top talent from outside Japan just like last year's Umebura F.A.T.. As each name was announced the crowd cheered louder and louder. Tweets were being sent out like crazy and everyone was extremely hype for Umebura S.A.T.. I hope we can bring this energy and excitement to their scene more often.
It is rare for Japanese players to get hype at tournaments. Some tournaments are an exception but in general it takes something really special for the crowd to get involved in the matches. Japan has sent countless players multiple times to the US and when Japan comes everyone in the States gets really hype. We need to give that feeling back to Japan. I am going to be working on more ways to send players over to Japan and find more ways to hold tournaments featuring talent from outside Japan. I hope you all visit soon!
The Japanese community has been a critical part of Smash 4's story line and I want to support them so we can continue to have amazing tournaments going forward. This weekend I will be at Sumabato for THE BIG HOUSE where I will represent The Big House 6 and award the winner with an all expenses paid trip to compete on one of America's biggest stages this October. Stay tuned to Smashboards for the preview article coming out soon! In the meantime, check out the trailer here.
Sayonara until next week.
