As for the RSO, I say we just go with the name Smashing Illini. It's short, to the point, similar to other RSO names, and most of us neither hates it nor loves it.

Edit: My roommate is interested in heading up the 64 division.

Dorms are off limits to RSO's. RSO meetings, events, etc. cannot be held in dorms without some cultural tie like furthering cultural awareness. Also, iirc, gambling is illegal on campus. This applies to tournaments where entry fees are collected. This is probably why the HKN tournament did not have cash prizes.

On another note, considering everything gets finalized and nothing falls through the cracks,

Illinites 04/27/07: Melee and Third Strike

Format will probably be 2v2. Last time was 1v1, and although we got a record 59 participants, time constraints (Illinites ends at 1 AM, no later) dictated we set format to one match, 2 stock. Anyone want to offer up any suggestions for this next one?

And yes, I am Tournament Coordinator for SoComFG. My info is in my profile if you want to contact me.

Probably would have to do 1 match, 3 stock, double elimination and then increasing that to best of 3 matches, 4 stock, in the later rounds like the HKN tournament. This didn't seem too bad, for me at least, and the doubles tournament went by pretty quickly, especially considering there were only like 3 TVs being used for doubles, and singles were being held at the same time.

I really liked the HKN format except for the room size. Increasing stock later on would be good. Either 3 or 4 stock but NEVER EVER do 2 stock! That would probably mean starting earlier. I remember when we were in the big room on first floor of Union that the tourny din't start till an hour after signup and that was really annoying.

I should probably correct this now, my name is spelled Jon, not John.

I think the biggest problem with some of these Illinites tournaments is that they start at 9. If it's possible, they should be starting at 7, but that would entail trying to advertise them separately. Trying to get done in 3.5 hours (if we get started by 9:30) is tough with as many people as are usually there. 3 hours is impossible with 3 stocks. The HKN tourny got done completely with singles 5 hours with 3 setups but Illinites should attract more people because it's free and has better prizes (Although I think it was near 60 people at the HKN, probably because it had pretty good advertisements as far as I could see).

Actually, the HKN tourney should have taken less time than that. The reason it ran that long was because we were finishing both singles and doubles, and of course, there was a lot of intersect.
So I would imagine that you probably could finish with 3 stock if it's run smoothly enough. And of course, a 4th setup and ease of "officiating" would help =)

Well, the reason I ask is that I know Dave can't really play on the weekends, so I just thought I'd ask. Plus Robin is looking for any conceivable reason to play smash at any time since he can play again.

I can play Wednesday after 5, hopefully u guys make it more like 7ish, so I can hopefully finish a paper I have due Thursday before this. If I can get that done I can smash til at most 2 or so.

As for the weekend is there any chance of something happening Sunday afternoon? I might be going home this weekend until Sunday at around lunchtime.

This is as good a topic as any other, I suppose - seeing as you folks are talking about doing some smash this weekend. I was at SMYM 7 and I'd really like to play some people beyond the locals. Any chance there's going to be something this Saturday at UIUC Smash-wise? Send me a PM, I can bring a 4-man crew and setups or other miscellaneous crap.

I am all for it being on Sunday.

We taped the matches from today's smashfest. Try not to laugh too hard whenever I get around to putting them up..

Whenever it is, does anyone other than me have a cube to bring to this? It'd be nice to get an extra setup or two, depending on how many people are thinking of showing up. It's becoming more and more likely I won't go home this weekend, but I'm still like 50/50.

And is this now the official U of I smash thread? We haven't talked about the 3/30 tourney in like 6 pages or something so I guess it could be.

I have a gamecube and tv I can bring

also the whole saturday sunday thing is wack, if you can do something on saturday and someone is hosting something on saturday go to it, if you can make it on sunday etc. etc., no need to set an arbitrary one thing per weekend limit, I mean come on

If we have a small turnout again we should come up with more events like Matt's point tallying free for all type thing. You know, just to mix things up a bit.

What about a singles tournament. Single elim. One match per round. 8 stock, but the stock you have remaining is all you can take with you to the next round. Kind of like a one man crew tournament. It'd probably only work with a small number of players, cause otherwise you'd have like the last 3 rounds with everyone only having like 1 stock left. We'd have to make sure to seed properly and have exactly like 8 people cause byes would kind of be unfair.

Or what about 2 human players per round and one random level 9 computer. Best 2/3, 4 stock, etc everything else normal. Loser can counterpick stage, character, and CPU character. If the computer player wins even one match both players are knocked out and the computer moves on to the next round. Then the next round match the human player that would have faced that winner of that match would instead face that same computer character plus another random level 9, basically giving them a bye for that round since you could probably just gimp em all. Adds a little extra element throwing a CPU in there while still being careful to make sure the computer doesn't win.

Or how about Jigglypuff "Nothing But Rest" free for alls. Those I've actually done before, long ago. **** Matt, now look what you've started. Giving me all these ideas and such.

Of course if we have more people I'll probably want to play normally to get my main some practice. This is just if we end up with like 6 people again for 6 hours.

I don't think I'll make it tomorrow at 5, but no big deal. Next weekend can we shoot for sunday, or early saturday? ...or friday?
