Uh if we're no longer joking about this, then I guess I could always bring a setup to any events we might have. 13" TV, cube, game, and card. My apartment is usually open for things. I have two bigger TVs plus that 13" we could use so we'd just need more cubes. We've had smashfests with 3 setups at my place before and could probably squeeze in a fourth somewhere. Although the Weston lounge is bigger, better, and more well lit. Plus everyone knows where it is.

Weekly smashfests would be fantastic. Preferably in the afternoons like we used to have them, cause I don't wanna sacrifice a weekend night every week. If we become an organization, we could probably do more Union tournaments. Having one every 2 to 4 weeks would be pretty cool.

As for officers and such, only a President and Treasurer are necessary, with a third optional authorized agent position available. If Brickman's doing the paperwork he'll most likely have to be one of the first two, probably Pres. His friend could be the Treasurer for easier organization. Or we could have Matt do it since Actuarial Scientists are financial wizards. Then again Treasurer Tom or Treasurer Trossman do have nice rings to them. I suggest we make that third authorized agent President of Parasol Plus Portable Power Pack Purchasing. That person will have to be quite rich.

I'm going to need some information for the people who want to be officers.

I'm going to need your net id numbers if you want to be a treasurer.

Also, we are going to need a general number of people who are going to join.

We should also work on what the purpose of our group is, and what/ if any community service we should do. I would suggest that we do community service, or hold a tournament for a charitable organization.

As for the structure of the group as far as meetings, smash fests, weeklies, and tournaments we are going to need to discuss these further.

Not to mention, we are going to need a name for our group... suggestions?

haha, come on Andy. If we can manage to get all of this together it would be awesome. Who wouldn't want to have tournaments every other week, and weekly practices. Now that is just awesome. Catch that next wave of smash players that are coming to school here next year as well.

I would prefer doing charity tournaments to community service because I used to do community service and I don't like it. Plus I could use some more burritos.

I also second the motion for naming it The Andy O'Brien Fan Club.

Or just call it Super Smash Club or something like that. The Society of Smash. Smashing Illini. Illini Smashers. Super Smash Clubbers Melee. Fantastic Pulverize Kinsmen Donnybrook.

also, as an organization you could rent out school premises, which sounds good, but then you consider that we can go to weston anytime and have that TV there it isn't that great...but for tournaments it would be nice, maybe the school will give us the money to buy new "equipment" (tvs, cubes, etc.)

"President of Parasol Plus Portable Power Pack Purchasing"

Agent Double 0 PPPPPPP, too good

and you should name it so that we can include all forms of smash, not just melee, so that when brawl comes out we can continue

Actually I kinda like Smashing Illini

Treasurer Trossman
I'm a physics major, common sense evades me.

But seriously, I don't think we'll have a problem with getting enough people in the slightest. I'm definitely down with it. I'd definitely do my part though it wouldn't be much. If anything, I want to be at the booth on quad day yelling "Join the smash club! Get beaten into the ground by us!". That is if my plan of putting a sign up sheet on the table and ignoring everyone while we play smash all day falls through.

haha, this is going to be a lot of fun getting organized.

Ok, for those who want to be officers, please give me your netid's they are required in order to create a group.

Secondly, lets get everyones opinion on the name for the group. "Smashing Illini" is one good entrants, lets get some opinions on it.

This is going to be great, lets get this moving.

Grid and my brother and I called ourselves IHOP a long time ago - International House of Pain.

(the sign did look like that several years ago, minus the editing)

I also signed up my junior or senior year or something as president of the Video Gamers Alliance, but I never made any use of it. Nick was treasurer.

I remember that being an RSO makes it even harder to rent dorm lounges, or I believe Capps told me something like that, but you have to be a resident of such a dorm to do that anyway. SMYM 1 was held in an ISR lounge before they put in some fairly strict guidelines.

What is this business about community service/charity? Just being nice, or is it some kind of requirement?

As far as charity goes, it makes us look like a legitimate organization, we do not have to donate a lot to charity, I think the minimum is $1, but it makes us look better. It is not a requirement, but it asks if you are going to do charity, and as far as getting a group approved, it would probably just make us look better. As far as potential names, the website says the cant have any abbreviation or of any part of University of Illinois in it, so there goes smashing illini. As far as getting places as a RSO, that is something we are going to have to look into further. I'm not currently aware of what the situation is for getting places.

That is something we are definitely going to have to look into. Is there places we can rent out that are not dorms, etc.

As far as name, I'm not sure how many people are going to get what International house of Pain is. name isn't the most important part, but it should have some connection to Smash if people are going to get it.

it is common, and it is also not allowed. Our group name can not have any part of The University of Illinois or abbreviations of it in our group name. We have to think of something else, something better!

Actually Smashing Illini is allowed. The rules state that the name must "Not include the words “University,” “University of Illinois,” or any abbreviations thereof except in the form “at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign” which may follow the organization’s particular name." The abbreviations it is referring to are abbreviations of that specific phrase, such as U of I, UIUC, UI, Uni of the Ill etc. However, Illini is not considered such an abbreviation, as the University has seen fit to approve such RSOs as the "Dodging Illini" of which I am a part of, and the "Harassing Illini" of which I had once signed up for at Quad Day two years ago and still cannot get off their mailing list.

Edit: But yeah think of something better. And I believe the Illini Grove is that place with the basketball hoop and barbecues surrounded by a bunch of trees over by PAR/FAR.

Edit Number Dos: At Smashing Grounds III or something the U of I smashers that stayed for crews called ourselves the Champs of Paign. There's another possibility.

haha ok. gotcha on both. As far as names go "champs of paign" is a phenomenal play on words, but same things as international house of pain, no one would actually know what we did. Except beat up nubs :)

use that same fantastic pun skill and create something with smash bros that came encompass super smash brothers, super smash brother melee and super smash brothers brawl.

I was not actually suggesting IHOP as a name. I was merely reminded of it when IHOS was suggested.

Maybe it's just because I'm old, but Smash IT UP sounds too "cool" to me.

Considering that I put quotes around "cool," I think that's quite likely.

fair enough, i guess we could always just try and force the Society for Competitive Fighting Games to have more smash tournaments if we got more involved in it, that way we would not have to create a new group/ go threw any paper work. we could just expand what they already have.

I agree with AOB, although ... his tournament 'Show Me Your Moves' is one of the 'coolest' names ever ...

I guess I'm gonna have to dust off my Pikachu and see if I can get it in shape in two days.

Entry fee? Prizes? Need me to bring anything?

Eww, no way am I doing low tier against Matt's G&W, but I'll pop by for some regular smash if you guys are up for it. A mini tourney would be fun.

Can we start not-too-late, like maybe 1pm?

Saturday? Coooooool....

And it's pretty cool that the HKN tourney could spur something this awesomes =)

Regarding the charity bit: If you're an RSO, it'll be rather difficult to provide a cash tourney.

However, if you're donating proceeds to charity, it's a LOT easier to get gift certificates from local businesses. And everyone eats right =]?

1 pm is good for me. I'll try to get a ride there so I can bring my TV but at minimum I'll at least bring my cube.
