Today, I only have two improvements for Brawl that (if implemented) are probably flying under our radar: The Pause feature, and Menu Settings.

Remember when we all thought being able to pause the game and move the camera around was the coolest thing in the world back in the Smash64 days. Melee didn’t update this feature much, so here’s looking to Brawl to exceed our non existent expectations.

Camera Freedom: It’s cool to be able to move the camera around the characters on the screen, but why limit us? Camera mode has much more camera maneuverability. I want to be able to zero in on characters and disengage and control the camera in a fly-by mode.

Screen Shot tool: Why do we have to go into camera mode to take a picture? The ability to take a picture whenever the game is paused (coupled with the new camera freedom) would make memories last. Sakurai, you may have been ahead of your time with Melee and all the cool features you tried to implement, but now there’s no excuse. Wii can do it. So, do it.

Zoom out before starting into the action again. I can’t count the many times I’ve seen Melee paused because of a celphone call or other issue. Every time the players are ready to battle, there is always a jarring jump when the game is unpaused between what you were doing and how you begin controlling again. We’ve tried clicking L o r R to show everyone where their characters are so they don’t accidentally put themselves into danger, but this isn’t enough. The solution is as simple as zooming out to the normal view of the stage while still paused for a moment before starting the action back up.

If you’ve been playing smash like I have, you’ve probably memorized a certain routine. After you hear the gamecube orchestra hit that final note, you wait a few seconds, hit start twice, down, A, A, move stick, A, set to stock, move down, set to 4, B, B. I have it down like clockwork. And if you’re trying to play teams there are additional steps to setting the team attack on. There isn’t much to say about fixing this issue, but it’s important.

Brawl needs to save our settings. Melee seemed to save our single player difficulty settings, our item settings, and little else. Brawl needs to save everything. There’s a good chance this is already the case. With complex control settings and gameplay settings, I’m confident that more settings will be saved in Brawl than ever before.

Masahiro Sakurai… I emplore you to take a moment to pause and… S.ave O.ur S.ettings!
