Training for Brawl

Brawl is coming out so, what do you recommend I do in preparation for it? I want to be as well rounded and skilled as possible without focusing on character specific skills like desynching with ICs since I'm sure the Brawl metagame will be significantly different.

I consider my skill level to be low-intermediate. I mean I spank most people I know but they aren't very good. I would probably do okay at a local tournmanet. Right now I'm playing Marth because he seems to take a lot of finesse, but would I be better trying to learn a lower tier character?

Also I haven't seen this question asked before but I don't think it merits its own thread. Do high end players ever watch their opponent's hands/controller as they play to try and read them? You see his finger twitch towards a button and you have more time to react than seeing his character initiate that move.

I'm not sure if wavedash will stay with brawl or not. If so, practice it, it is important. Lear how to shuffle ad of that sort. Ad lots of mindgames! You will eed it. Try your est to have a really good solid basics, if you do that, your trasition to brawl will be pretty good.

Meh, if brawls a good game, your training in melee will pay off. If it sucks, and they make everything automatic (like theyre doing to crouch cancelling (see Ikes special moves) links hookshot recovery, and the neutral jab combo) then chances are melee players wont like game.

Meh, I pray brawl is very similar to melee. If they stray too far from the greatest game ever made they're going to F*** up smashbros big time.

you should train with a character that you know is in brawl, otherwise you'll get brawl and your character isnt there and then you're screwed. marth is an alround good character and someone in brawl is bound to have a similar move set to him(possibly Ike) so stick with marth. like the replies above, you should stick with l-canceling and so on and hope its used in brawl

Learn to L-Cancel. I guarantee it will make a return, and it is one of the most important tactics. Don't worry about wavedashing.
Meh, crouch cancelling is automatic in brawl for heavy characters (no flinching, CCing, same thing). Theres a strong chance L cancelling might be too. This would ruin the game, since no one would ever miss a cancel if they were automatic.

I hope L cancelling is still in brawl, if we still have the short hop, fastfall, and L cancel, then theres no way brawl can fail as a competitive fighter... those are the essential techs afterall...

but what about walljumping, spotdodging... we know airdodging is in brawl (see giga bowser final smash update) but the other techs are a mystery...

I hope all the techniques are back, personally. And that there are way more added to the mix, the footstooljump seems nice but pretty useless as it most likely doesnt have a hitbox and could be easily counterd with an up b or a move.

My advice for brawl would be just dont worry about it, play melee and have fun. If you're having fun, you're getting better.

Think when you play, if you make mistakes, fix em. And dont let yourself get frustrated. Wise words, trust me.

They aren't changing CC. It is only a result of Ike's move, just like several characters in melee had invincibility frames before they're move actually started (shine, Samus UpB, Peach UpB). And the neutral jab was easy to do anyway, it doesn't really make a difference. Mainly I dislike the auto hookshot because now you can't tether to walls, it will automatically go to the ledge, and if that's out of range, you fall to your doom, instead of grappling to the wall and using up b to safely recover. Otherwise, I don't care.

As for the actual question: Practice shffling, until you can do it perfectly with every character. Then WD, I suppose, as it's highly likely that it will return. Can't htink of anything else really....

Try to play intelligently and get into a habit of actually THINKING in a match, and to be able to observe your opponent and analyze the situation. I am strugglign to even take a step towards this direction.

Why don't you just wait until brawl comes out before you start thinking about how your going to train. You've got plenty of time for practicing it once it's here. Also, this is obviously supposed to be in the brawl forums.

Umm, I think it would be pretty ******** if they just had the hookshot screw you over/blow up or something if you're just out of range of a ledge. It'll probably do somethin' at least a little useful for when you're out of ledge-range.

And yeah, what Witchking said, practice SHFFL/WD until you're super confident with doing it with every character, because the more characters you learn how to do it with the better chance you'll be able to learn more quickly any new timings that Brawl characters have.

And as for your question about watching other peoples' hands, uhh...from what I've seen, that's definately not a commonly used...tactic. It's kinda weird and pointless for the most part.

Of course it would be ********. That doesn't mean it won't happen, does it though? Yes, it's worst case scenario, but imagine the horror. Link's hookshot would be absolutely ruined. Why am I laughing?

Hehehe. I hate link too, dont worry ;)

Smash link, you see. For sucking so hard and for being my main when I was a nub... and hes just a really really bad character.

I love zelda games.... but I dont much care for link in smash at all, despite him being my main from 1999-2006. I'm weird like that but meh i didnt play REAL smash (advanced techniques, bi-weeklies, real mindgames, improvement, no items) until about a year and a half ago... when I promptly switched my main character hehe :p

Game mechanics are likely going to be very different.

Overall skill (both tech and mindgames) will carry from original to sequel to sequel, as it does in all fighting games; this will happen through memory, adaptation, and innovation. Quite frankly, someone like Isai is going to be pretty d*mn skilled at the game the moment he picks it up, just like before.

Strangely, Link was my first main too. I had no idea about the competitive scene, yeah. Then, i became a different kind of nub. The type of n00b that thinks tiers always win, and being able to WD meant always beating someone who didn't. So I took a look at the tier list, went "Oh crap" when I saw that Link was very low, then switched Marth from secondary to main.

I have no idea why I actually dislike Link in smash...I just don't. I just want to viciously rip him apart. Rip! Mangle! Injure! Tipper FTW!

Although Zelda Link is cool...

what i think is that watching next movement in the handed controi of ur opponent wont work, because the movement is instantly, like, thers no lag, and well, using a low tier character will skill in this game, but i dont think in the other will too. What i think is that u gotta play the character u like because thers no difference between using a low tier character or a top tier man, because of that the movements in ssbb would be diferents..

Use someone who will be in Brawl like Mario, Link, or Fox. I prefer Fox since hes top tier in Melee and might still be top in Brawl. Sheik and Samus are also good. If not, wait for the tier list to come out for Brawl and use a high tier.

That's pretty dumb.
1) Tiers may change drastically, and we have no idea how they'll turn out.
2) Don't pick your main based on tiers.

Link isn't as bad as people think. Even if the Link doesn't wavedash, Aniki is proof that Link can still own, low tier and all. Why do I main him? I like swords, bombs, and boomerangs. Plus, Link is a bad mofo.
