Why isn't Syndicate (*2016) a category 3? With 320 entrants made up of top players traveling from various different countries to compete, going by the descriptions you have in the OP, calling it a category 2 isn't doing it justice.

I can't really say I agree. Comparing the tip-tops;

Syndicate seems lacking in skill pool of the top 30-40 range to me by comparison. The fact that Mr. R never dropped a game doesn't help this perception at all, nor does iStudying's lackluster NA results or Abadango only drop a game during his trip to PPT Summer.

The twofold issue is that;
-Only 1 top 10-ish player in attendance, compare to the others above where at least 2 attend and things are usually backended by a lot of 10-30-ish players
-Europe hasn't done a lot internationally. EVO and the following Umebura (SAT and 25) are enormous sticking points for how good Japan is, while Europe's best/most consistent upsets usually seem to come out of iStudying. (Rich Brown, ESAM, MVD, etc.)

I'll do further recent set research on the players in the top 8/16 but simply having a lot of countries in attendance doesn't mean much if the skill pool isn't super-high compared to other tournies of C3 categorization.

I've been wondering lately. Have you considered including top 32 in the rankings for 196+ entrant tournaments or maybe Category 3 tournaments? I feel like there's a lot of good data that gets left behind because of the top 16 restriction sometimes. Might be a bit weird to just start doing it now, but maybe in 2017 or post-TBH6, it might be a good thing to do.

I agree.

The higher a tournament's category the lower the threshold should be. A C1 tournament would be completely fine to only have their top 8 included in the rankings whereas a 17th place at Evo is easily good enough to be considered relevant but, so far, isn't.

Including top 8 for C1, top 12 for C2, top 16 for C3 and like top 32 for the rare C4 tournament sounds reasonable enough to me, a 25th place at Evo is surely a more notable accomplishment than a 13th place at a local that randomly hit the 80+ entrants mark.

I have been intending to utilize a system that counts like that. It wouldn't replace the top 16, but it'd be a useful metric. I'd count 8 > 16 > 32 > 48/64 depending on the category. I'd have to look at some C4 tournies to see where the cutoff is. A lot of 33rds at EVO had to beat really good players to get there, e.g., HIKARU had to be Falln for example, which is more important a result than most locals.

I'm considering retiring both unweighted lists since it's a big time investment for additional data that's easy to extrapolate just by looking at results at bigger tournaments. As I've used other expansive methods (upper category, long-term, the usual top 16) it seems less and less necessary.

We weren't expecting to get so many entrants all of a sudden as only 55 people pre-rego'd, but a mini-major kind of thing is happening in Sydney this weekend, EB Expo smash tournament with a prize pool of $2.5k, atm waiting on top 8 which will be played out tomoz and has been featuring peeps like Ghost, Waveguider, Extra, MM, Boozer and more. Final entrant number ended up at 92, not sure if you'd like to count it but here it is anyway:

Dunno if you'd bother including this because it's very scraping on the numbers Das Koopa but Great Cave Offensive 3 happened two weekends ago, featuring Hazmatt, the New England PR'd Bayo who was over on a business trip, and also had myself and Kris (who made top 8 at EB Expo recently) and MM / Saucy who are both on our Aus PR, so imo kind of equivalent to the Couch Warriors events you sometimes include from Vic. Up to you though.
