The original FMA isn't some kind of prequel to Brotherhood.
The first anime series is an adaptation of the manga that changed some stuff from it's source, while Brotherhood follows the manga closely and is considered the 'canon', if you say.
Both are good series to watch, but if you want to see Brotherhood first, there's no problem.

Can concur, I watched Brotherhood without having seen the original and felt completely and 100% in-the-know in doing so.

Soon as my Dad is done vacuuming I'll be good to go.
