Remember back in December 2018 when Joker/Ren was announced for Smash Ultimate DLC? Joker/Ren is from Persona, which is part of the Megami Tensei franchise. However, although he originates from a videogame, the videogame he originates from isn't from a franchise that started out as a videogame. Megami Tensei actually started out as a novel series called Digital Devil Story.

Back in Brawl and Smash 4, non-videogame characters and fancharacters were automatically deconfirmed as playable characters. They couldn't even have any place at all. But could Joker/Ren joining Smash lead to something even more dramatic?

So, does this mean that non-videogame franchises can now be in Smash? Are non-videogame characters no longer deconfirmed? However, fancharacters, are still deconfirmed.

PS: In my opinion, non-videogame franchises should only be represented if they have had significant videogame history. And it should be limited to assist trophies and spirits.

By that logic, Pit shouldn't be in Smash because Greek mythology is not a video game franchise.

Video games take inspiration from other medias all the time. And regardless of what Megami Tensei is, Persona is a video game franchise and Joker debuted in a video game.

Well, if it's a videogame franchise that's inspired by a non-videogame thing/media/franchise (such as Kid Icarus), then it's okay.

But Persona is a sub-franchise of Megami Tensei.

Yep. It's the same with Megami Tensei. Not to mention Persona is spun-off from Shin Megami Tensei: if which spun-off from Shin Megami Tensei which spun-off from Megami Tensei which spun-off from Digital Devil Story.

I mean, the connection is a bit loose either way.

Well, videogame spin-off sub-franchises/series from non-videogame franchises/series don't count as only being inspired. They are still considered to be part of a non-videogame franchise.

So with that logic, does that mean that Joker/Ren shouldn't be in Smash?

According to who?

He's a video game character, so he's a legit candidate for Smash. Sakurai thought so and Nintendo thought so. No sane person will think a video game franchise is a part of a two book series just because it has its roots in it.

Plus, considering Lucario debuted in an animated movie and R.O.B. is a real life toy, it's not like "the rules" are as tight as you're making up them to be.

This is just another one of your rants to get Tails in Smash, isn't it?

Persona is seen as its own series while still keeping most elements from SMT. However, the connection between Digital Devil Story and Persona 5 is absurdly loose to the point where it's not even worth bringing up.

As these things go, Castlevania's got a much closer connection to a book than Persona 5 does. If you want to get into the semantics of what counts as a game character, that's a much better place to start.

No, it's not. It's a spin-off at worst. And it's its own franchise independent from Megami Tensei.
Persona's Wikipedia page said:
Persona is a spin-off from Atlus' Megami Tensei franchise
So, if a videogame spin-off (sub-)franchise/series from a non-videogame super-franchise, be in Smash, starting in Ultimate. Can a non-videogame spin off (sub-)franchise/series from a videogame super-franchise be in Smash, (which is vise versa).

For example, Archie Comics Sonic franchise isn't a videogame franchise, but it's part of the Sonic franchise, so could it be represented in smash?

Of course not. Use common sense.

No. Archie characters aren't owned by SEGA. Persona is fully owned by ATLUS. Nintento only uses content from video game developers.

You don't need to be a genious to make the connection.

....Did you just dead*** ask if non-video game series were eligible for Smash because Persona got in?

So if videogame spin-off (sub-)franchises/series from non-videogame (super-)franchises can be in Smash, why can't non-videogame (sub-)franchises (such as Archie Comics Sonic) from videogame (super-)franchises be represented in smash?

Technically, it would still represent a videogame franchise.

Personally, I would love to see Bunnie as a spirit and/or an assist trophy.

@osby already answered that question. Don’t overthink something so blatantly simple.

I guess it does, but the real reason why Sega isn't doing anything to canonize the Archie characters is due to legality. They're pretty **** at keeping legal rights to certain Sonic things in line; hell, THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE FULL RIGHTS TO THE GREEN HILL ZONE SONG.

No, having Persona 5 doesn’t indiciate that non-video game characters are eligible. In addition, we generally do not allow threads dedicated to non-party characters or franchises in the Ultimate Discussion. Feel free to bring it up in the Ultimate Discussion Social thread.
