Who is Wile E. Coyote and what is Looney Tunes?

I am sure everyone recognizes this familiar coyote but Wile E. Coyote is a coyote who often appears with the Road Runner as a part of the collection of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. The duo first appeared in the theatrical cartoon short Fast and Furry-ous in 1949 where we saw how Wile E. is always on the prowl to get Road Runner and how he uses traps and contraptions to catch his prey. Looney Tunes needs no introduction as the slapstick cartoons with the even-iconic Bugs Bunny and the colorful cast of...well, looney characters going through all sorts of crazy cartoon antics. It's Warner's biggest franchise.

Since then, Wile E. has been on the prowl appearing in various Looney Tunes cartoons, getting his show with the Road Runner called The Road Runner Show, appearing in the famous PBS show in the 70s called The Electric Company in a segment involving them displaying words for children to read, Tiny Toons Adventures, etc. Let’s not forget the one scene with him in the Mad Max universe in Space Jam: A New Legacy (alternate skin potential maybe?).

Wile E. was even the occasional antagonist to Bugs Bunny in some of the Looney Tunes shorts. Let’s also not forget how another Looney Tunes character bears the exact likeness to Wile E. being Ralph Wolf himself receiving some animated cartoon shorts as well.

Why should he join MultiVersus?

Wile E. is simply a very iconic cartoon character and villain. With MultiVersus currently only having three Looney Tunes characters and technically Lebron James representing the Space Jam universe, we definitely can use more to represent one of Warner Bros’s flagship franchises. Since this support thread is launching around the MultiVersus relaunch and the first season is supposedly going to be villain-themed (probably), Wile E. would fit into that just well. He may as well work with the Joker, of course.

However, there’s one thing that may lead the coyote to doom in terms of joining the fight in MultiVersus which I will cover later in the introductory post.

How would he play in MultiVersus?

This is a simple question. Wile E. would be a mage/trapper who heavily uses ACME’s dynamite products and even fake paintings. I can envision one of his gimmicks being where if he is offstage, he can run in the air for a second similar to what he does in the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons. Even then, he could be a bit like Pichu from the Smash games given how Wile E. constantly gets himself hurt with his traps occasionally taking damage if you are not careful. There’s lots of inspiration from the cartoons, video games, etc. that he is in for a fun moveset.

Now, onto the biggest hurdle for Wile E…

The Coyote vs ACME debacle

Yes, this has to be discussed.

So, Coyote vs ACME is a currently unreleased film based on the magazine article of the same name. Development began way back in 2018 and it was supposed to release on July 21, 2023, but got replaced with the Barbie movie. Since then, the film has gone through…a lot of trouble getting a movie company to distribute it to the big screen. Warner Bros Discovery would not screen it themselves so…it’s still going through that problem.

Ever since the whole Warner Bros Discovery merger, there have been a lot of cancellations of various projects and deletions of Warner Bros’s library of shows from their streaming service MAX.

Now, the reason why I say this MAY affect Wile E’s chances is that Warner may want more characters to market current and upcoming projects and such (look at Black Adam for instance when he got released). However, we have recently gotten characters like Jason Voorhees (and we are getting a Jason Universe to repromote the Friday the 13th universe) and such so anything is possible with Player First Games. However, I believe Tony Hyunh has said the buyout may not affect MultiVersus and that we are in good hands.

Hopefully, we get Wile E. Coyote at the end of the day. I do think we will get something given in the Jason Voorhees/Agent Smith trailer, the ACME factory appears in the background as one of the foreshadowing Easter Eggs in the trailer so that could foreshadow Wile E. joining the roster, an ACME factory stage, etc. Wile E. is super iconic and thus can prove he can catch more prey than just a roadrunner.
