The Super Smash Bros Series - Should it End or Continue?

I would understand if I get hated for posting this topic.

I have to be honest...I hope the Super Smash Bros series end after Smash Bros Wii U/3DS because I want to see how the series will end in my life time and it takes a long time waiting for release dates of the series and even announcements.

Don't get me wrong.

They have to take their time and put their heart into development of the game and when the wait is over it's worth it but for some fans when a character don't appear that you put a lot of work into supporting till the release of the new title you were sure that was meant to be in the game and would have fit the style of the game perfectly can tire/wear you out.

I read a lot of amazing character support threads but what if all that hard work is for nothing?...we all should know that the Japanese get the final say on what they want in the series.

Sure.

It's fun predicting Characters, Stages, Soundtracks, Features, Items and Pokeballs now but this can get depressing.

I hope you all get what you deserve from the series but I'm ready for this to end.

What's your opinion?

Should the battle of the Super Smash Bros series End or Continue?

If they can come up with good reasons to continue making the games after this one, besides just expanding the roster and for money, then I'm all for it continuing. However, I'd hate for it to end up becoming a game that's forcefully released without adding anything new to the mix. However, I'd also hate for it to end after this one when there's still potential things to do with the game.

In short, as long as something new can be brought to the table I think it should continue, once it can't bring anything new to the table anymore, it should end before becoming an old cliché.

The Smash Bros series won't end because as long as Nintendo continue releasing new titles from the Mario and Zelda series, and if Gamefreak continue creating new Pokémon for new generations then it would make sense to keep the Smash Bros series going since one of the main reasons, Link will have new designs for the next generation Zelda games. I just wanted to get my thoughts out and wouldn't want to be in my 40's still getting hyped when a new Smash Bros title is announced.

And more important. If Sakurai isn't the leading developer of the series then it could probably be ruined already without him around since I heard he had an arm injury which could be a sign of him getting over aged for developing games. I think this is something we should worry more about rather then Smash.

I hope not as well but not to be selfish, I would feel a bit cheated if we don't get Mega Man.

Are you kidding me? you could have easily found out my age by clicked my profile. You just wasted your own time and did you even read any of our posts? I just said I wouldn't want to be in my 40's still getting hyped when a new Smash Bros title is announced, meaning I'm no where near my 80's and you might would want to edit your post because I'm pretty sure using bad language is against the rules.

I think it should continue with the current trend. One per major console release. How many more consoles there will be is another subject entirely.

Very true. They should start planning ahead with new names for their next consoles.

If they ditch the Smash Bros franchise and make a new series with the same core gameplay mechanics I wouldn't mind. They could let more outside companies work on it and make it a total videogame crossover shmorgasborg. Megaman vs Mario vs Goku vs Dig Dug or some crazy sh$# like that. I'd still main the Nintendo reps of course...

As a Melee player I don´t really care wheter there are another 10 Smash Bros games or not, since those games will most certainly be targeting casual gamers/the next generation and that´s asured due to the lack of CRTs in the future and therefore only shi??y flatscreens will be viable for the game, which makes playing fast alomst impossible.
All I care for in the future concering games besides Melee is Air Dash Online, because M2k and other Melee players are in that development team and I believe in "the Robot" to make that game meet my expectations.

As long as they plenty of new features and stuff that will keep the game interesting and don't end up like CoD where they just add a few things but make it so repeative, then by all means let the series continue. Besides, the Smash series is one of Nintendo's best things around, from the first game to what we have now, and soon, to Smash4.

I think it should be like how it has been: one release per console, similarly to Mario Kart.

The allusions to games released in the time span between each game is one of the elements that keep it fresh.

Gameplay-wise, I think each game should have its own mechanics and quirks and not delve into hypothetical Melee 2.0 or Brawl 2.0. That's rehashing.

Keep a long time span between each game by releasing one title per generation and I think the Smash franchise will last a long time, even if Sakurai stops directing the games.

When I thought it through...I guess the series should continue...and the wait would be interesting since I wouldn't expect another Smash Bros game after the Wii U/3DS versions. I just don't want the series to be ruined.

eh. gotta say, theyre reaching an apex of what they can do that's interesting. Post brawl, theyre running out of A-list characters to add (though most wouldn't admit it, very few of the most discussed sm4sh characters on this board are that generally well known). Peeps say it shouldn't just be about adding characters - and it shouldn't, but in a fighting game they're the foundation of the game.
Stage ideas, unlike characters, are basically infinite. But stage layouts, which are more important to how the game plays, aren't. And if the stage builder is improved this game, the standard stage selection is almost redundant.
For music, brawl can't really be beat, just added to. It includes such a variety of both renowned and under loved music from all generations.
As good as smash's story mode copuld be, it's never gonna be about that.
and last but not least, how many key mechanics can they integrate without messing their formula?

I'm a firm believer of things not over staying their welcome. I'd be cool with it being the last one, so long as the online is good. unless nintendo has a massive amount of killer new ips in the next few years.

Yeah, I'm also not wanting them to continue just for the sake of continuing. The characters, playstyle and new features are what bring me in but after the next game, I'm almost certain that I won't care about more characters and there's only so many features you can add that will excite people. Even Sakurai said that there's not much left to add after brawl. Either way, I don't see myself getting hyped after this one.

I would say no because it's not a franchise that is being run into the ground at all. They release one game every generation and there has yet to be a game that has been universally panned. If anything, I would argue that Smash Bros is a prime example of how video game developers should handle most franchises. Each installment has its flaws but it's obvious that a lot of work is put into them and that they are carefully thought out (granted a few oversights). I also appreciate the fact that it is a franchise that takes significant risks and that it doesn't just pack up its bags if something doesn't work. It's a franchise that learns from its mistakes and strives to out due itself with every new game, while most franchises the goal is simply to have a new game every year/two years. If you want a good example of franchises that should probably end, look at Final Fantasy or Call of Duty because they have been run into ground despite protests from a majority of the fans.

I don't think any bad language was used but rather sarcasm.

Look, I am already too old and after certain things that have happened; I wonder too if I should be hyped for this. But I always dreamed of seeing Mega Man making it to Smash, and it might happen soon. But if it happens; I will sort of have some guilt from celebrating.

Not sure how old are you, I will check when I am done with this message, but well times change. It could be your own decision, or maybe by influence from your family or peers along with the social stigmas they bring in, maybe you believe you will be too old at a certain age to do some things. Be aware, like I said times change. The 50's was the born and boom of teen culture, and I believe something similar happened in the 80's; but not focused on teens but younger. And I am seeing these social changes from the generation called Millenians which try to act more child-like, but seen rather immature by older generations.

Man, I am not sure what to say anymore lol. What you believe is the right thing for you take it, but I am still in my own pligramage; but unlike some, I do regret many things in my life. Even those which were not under my control. At times I wish things would be different and better in the world, but that is just me.

From a certain point of view, you are right; if the Smash franchise gets exaggerated; it might lose its value. Best thing Nintendo can do might be give it a break once in a while to be fresh when needed (Pokemon needs this). Oh and take note from the people behind Guitar Hero and Rock Band as they realized they had to stop. But if they come out one per console, then there is some control. Still it is fun to speculate characters for future games.

I'd rather see it end. It's been a long time since smash was good.
Because one game that I assume you don't like is reason to lose hope forever right?

Kinda sad how some people lose hope in a series as soon as the first mishap. Come on, it was only one game... :/

Pretty much this, especially since Sakurai is still going to be around, he'll still want to make a new game or two every 5-8 years, and he'll still always have new ideas, and smash has got a long way to go before all new ideas, concepts, etc are in the series.

Oh, and Sakurai is still only in like his 30's or 40's!!!

Man, I guess the new trailer newberinos are already here, eh=???

Well, it can't be helped that stupid, ignorant people outnumber intelligent, knowledgeable people. It's sad, but that's today's reality.

Brawl had its issues, sure, but Melee wasn't perfect despite how many people like to paint it as.
The fact that, 5 years later after Brawl's release, people are still arguing over which game is better between Melee and Brawl, proves how dumb and fundamentalist this community is.

I mean, you're given two games and you like one better than the other. Couldn't it be any easier to pick your favorite and let the others play what they want?!

Anyway, regarding the topic at hand, the series proves to be profitable, the games are waited with anticipation and all three games were well received, I see no reason for it to end.
It's not like the series is being milked either, since there's only one title released per console. As long as the time span between each game is moderate, I won't see it dying any soon.

Even if Sakurai loses interest in the series, there surely are more designers that may take interest in it and make new titles for the series.

Take the Fire Emblem series, for example. Its creator, Shouzou Kaga, left Intelligent Systems, but the series is still going. The same can be said about Kirby, the other of Sakurai's creations.

And it wasn't bad really. It was a great game. It just wasn't Melee. Same old story, people just want the same thing over and over and over.

If they can keep it relevant and change it up enough to keep it interesting I see no reason not to continue it. One per console like always though.

Considering Smash, while being run by the best studio possible, doesn't even have the best producer from Nintendo and has many more things available to it?

Hell yeah. One per every console/handheld release is good, but I would also say we should start seeing more fan submission/DLC stuff (Like Super Luigi U) and not only changes in gameplay but modes that you truly want to play.

Brawl is god awful when compared to the previous games. If looked at objectively with out ssbm or 64 on the brain it's closer to subpar/ average. Certainly not the bench mark for the series that melee was.

Not at all. A smash player it is. A Nintendo fan I am. It's very important to call a company on the mistakes they make. Modern nintendrones are such yes men. I blame them for the current hardships the big n is facing.

I agree with this. :)

But eh, I still don't think Brawl was a subpar game. :p

As long as the gameplay doesn't get stale each generation, then yes, it should continue, which is good for Nintendo and for us gamers.

It was foolish to have asked this question, the smash bros series will continue as long as nintendo is alive. As they create new franchises and add new characters to current ones, they open doors for more stories with characters, stages, and fighters. THis thread is a waste of time.

The series should go on given it's always giving them money (as much of a melee dude I am), as most people I know love playing Brawl and are crazy excited for SSB4.
Although maybe it's time for a new company to take this recipe and do it justice (a few are trying but not really cashing in on the what-if spirtual successor Melee 2.0). Perhaps a Melee version of what Skullgirls was to MvC2.
