Sorry if someone noticed this before.
I couldn't find anyone else mentioning it.

They seem to be just circles that correspond to your player color.
I miss the mini heads. :(

Actually, I remember someone pointing it out in one of the Sudden Death videos from E for All, but now we have an actual clear picture. I don't mind, it would look redundant with the avatars and all if it was the mini-heads.

The circles kinda look plain though. Heads were unique. :)
Yeah I can't complain either though. They did add the pictures.

Heads aren't unique. I mean, nearly every platform game uses a mini-version of the character or their head to represent "extra lives". However, I'd prefer it if they had used the Super Smash Brothers symbol. You know, to represent the amount of "smashers" you have left.

Still just a demo, they could bring the heads back. I don't mind either way. First time I've noticed the change though.

I meant unique character-wise but doesn't matter.
Smash symbol is a cool idea.

Right behind you with a knife.
Though they don't show up there, we actually do have the mini-heads in some form. If you watch some of the videos, and see the end parts where they rank up the score, there's times where you'll see the old icons. Why they are not in here though is probably to reduce dedundancy.

Yeah, the heads will be missed. However, I don't mind this new setup. I actually really like the character pictures on the bottom of the screen-it makes it clear who's damage is what, instead of squinting to see what the icon is behind your damage, or whose little head is what;

i really hate those avatars with the character's name and face on it. like, really, what the hell for? in case i forget what character i'm playing as?

i know it doesn't cover the whole screen and i'm not going to over exaggerate it, but i hate that it takes up *some* space on the screen. it's just... ugly. i hope there's an option to turn it off.

By the looks of it they do............. in the subspace emissary videos to represent the # of people you have in your party

Weird Shiek head is weird...

I don't really care for such small detail... If they take it out, hey you win some you lose some...

You know me too well Takeshi. Anyways, this is going to get locked in an hour or so...so enjoy yourselves while you can.

I think the stocks now are better because the heads take up too much room imo.

They're used to lessen confusion with who's damage meter is which. I'm not an idiot, but sometimes late at night when I'm a bit tired and playing with friends, I can't see the little face icons and the logo behind the damage number. The faces just ease the process.

Plus, they don't get in the way. If you notice, in demo videos and what not, the avatars become transparent whenever there's a character/item behind it, so you can see what's going on.

Oh no!

Brawl is a different game from Melee! What ever shall we do?!
Clearly the only answer at this point is a cult suicide pact. That'll show 'em not to completely destroy the essence of what made the past games so great.

Ontopic: I think it's partly due to Subspace... since you can have multi characters and according to the Adventure Mode > Team update, when you lose a stock you come back as a different character on your team. Obviously the portrait will change, so the mini-heads could as well, but then you can factor in co-op (two portraits) sharing the same stock count. One problem with this theory, is that looking at a few pictures of subspace that show the portraits/damage (Mario and Pit one), I don't see the stock marker. Could be that you only have Mario and Pit at the point... but who knows.

And there's the whole portrait + minihead is redundant thingy, which makes more sense, lol.

Ugh, I hope they pictures of the faces at the bottom of screen dont get in the way of the battle when all the players are down on a low platform like the Temple level in Melee. I think they should be transparent or something but it should be fine.

That's exactly what they do.
If you watched and E for All videos you would have seen this.

but why a picture? it works just as well with the old tiny heads for stocks. it's not like it's impossible to make it work with tiny heads. we're in the 21st century. it works just fine with the character's name right below the damage counter/character's emblem.

like, was this the conversation they had while coming up with the idea?: "okay, so we're adding all this sh*t to the game, and just so we please *everybody,* let's add this too, 'cause we know someone is going to be dumb enough(in some of the least likely scenarios) to forget which character he picked and where his damage counter is. put mario's f*cking face, his mushroom kingdom emblem, the damage counter, and his name right below it."

anyways, i know the avatars go translucent from the videos in certain situations, but that's like saying they *know* it's going to be in the way or bother some people. hopefully hopefully hopefully, there will be an option to turn it off.

the way i see it: boxers already have their names/nicknames written on their trunks. what if they gave the boxers t-shirts with their faces on it? that's basically what they're doing with brawl. to me, at least.

OH NOES!! THOSE LITTLE HEADS THAT REPRESENT MAH LIVES IZ GONE AND REPLACED WITH DA RECTANGLEZ!!!

Get over it. The greatness of this game is not going to be affected by something so minor and insignificant.

The icons being transperant is a relief, because I found that in Melee they got in the way on stages with really high ceilings. For example, say there is a FFA on the Kirby 64 stage. Someone with a fairly high percentage gets knocked to the top. Again, the stage has a high ceiling, so it has to zoom all the way out to catch all of the players fighting. The thing is, I can't even see what the **** I'm doing because the symbol/meter is blocking my character at the bottom of the screen.

I hope no one is taking it that seriously.
