Hey guys,

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and there have been a lot of things going on in and around the smash community that have both intrigued and have been bugging me to no end.

We all know that there are three current Smash Brothers games. 64, Melee, and Brawl. Some people play Melee while others play Brawl. Its probably pretty safe to say that everyone loves to play Smash 64 for fun with very little community members still taking it seriously. It's definitely really fun. If you've never played it.....you're missing out.

As I stated above some smashers are Pro Melee while the others are Pro Brawl. I really do believe the fact that the community really did "split into two" when Brawl was released with the exception of a minority of Melee players ACTIVELY participating in Brawl tournaments. I've seen DJ Nintendo, Alukard, myself, Icylight, M2K, Lain, unknownforce, Omegablackmage, Dazwa, Darc, and a few other Melee vets actively attend tournaments or attend one or two on a limb. I actually to this day still play Brawl but am vastly more interested in the Melee scene simply because I think it's a better competitive game IMO. If I had more time I'd go to Brawl events but since my time is so limited lately, I want to take the time I do have to play Melee.

Another key reason why I'm crossed between the two games is because of the mentality of the players from both games.

First and foremost I'll talk about my depiction of the Brawl scene.

Brawl:

(Just so everyone knows, I'm making generalizations...I'm not attacking or hating on either game or any group or particular player. There are definitely exceptions to people i've met or know.)

-Brawl players are extremely friendly for the most part and are very open to new and exciting concepts within Brawl. They are the new members to our community and I find are very easy to talk to. They are not exactly extremely knowledgeable about smash but they are very eager to learn.

-The thing is/problem with this is that most of the Brawl scene is lacking in knowledge of the game and that is why Melee players look down on it. Not to be rude but most of the Melee players think Brawl is a joke and really takes no brain power. In all fairness, Brawl is a game where you camp your shield and at high levels is silly and extremely boring to watch. Snake dittos are a prime example of this. What do you do in Snake dittos? You camp grenades. You're honestly going to sit there and tell me DDD's infinite on Bowser and DK (a standing down throw w no movement) isn't dumb? Or Marths infinite grab release on Ness and Lucas? or any wall d tilt made by marth or meta knight or grab by DDD? or Walk off CG on Castle Siege or Delfino? That's innovative to game play? No, its dumb.

(I think Marths on Meta Knight is amazing because MK is so god **** stupid he deserves it.)

-They dont want to learn Melee because they are "behind and will just get *****." "Everyones so much better than me!" That is the biggest scrubbiest mentality I have ever heard. You play something because you enjoy and than watch yourself get better and have fun with it. You do not constantly play just to win. If you want to play to win be a tier *** and go Fox. LOL shine. The combos and exciting things that happen in Melee are ten times more exciting than anything that has ever happened or will happen in Brawl. The most exciting thing in Brawl to date was Ally and Lain beating M2K in the same tournament.

-Have you ever gone on the road with a Brawl player or to a restaurant? Most of them pay for gas when driven, will pay venue fees without complaining, and will pitch in for tips at iHOP when they need to pitch in. Brawl players are generally, not cheap.

-Another great thing about Brawl players is that the players who recognize that Melee is the better competitive game or have played Melee are some of the coolest people to hangout with IMO. These are the Brawl players that I enjoy talking to. As long as a player recognizes and at least knows Melee is deeper than Brawl....than they aren't the typical cliche "mindless" Brawl player. Maybe they just like the idea of more diverse levels and characters and don't see the campiness in it yet? Who knows. IMO, if you can see why something is what it is than it's all good.

Melee:

-The Melee scene is full of much more advanced players than the scene of Brawl. (Lain, M2K, Ally, Mike Haze) This makes it so much easier to learn advice and grow as a player faster. Melee has so much more high level representation that it makes me cry. (Scar, Silent Spectre, M2K, Hungrybox, PC Chris...he's still incredible, Zhu, Lucky, MaNg0, Axe, Taj, Ka Master, Hax, DaShizwiz, DJ Nintendo, DR PP, etc) It is so easy to seek advice in Melee.

-Melee commentating is just.........better. Homemadewaffles, DA Dave, Wife, Husband, the yelling and screaming, the singing of "I'm on a boat" and "hes havin a good time....he's havin a ball." Brawl commentary is just match up explanation and "he might get the kill guys." Very dry.

-Melee players are.......smarter players. I'm sorry...but its true. lol. Neo, Azen, M2K,, Icylight, Lain, PC Chris and Cort all played Melee and are fantastic at Brawl too. What does that tell you guys?

Problem is that the Melee players are the biggest set of cheap *******s I've ever come across in my entire life. You all know its true so please, don't argue it. I've seen players not tip at all for food, not pay someone for gas because they "don't have any money" or "didn't bring enough money with them." I've also seen players try to literally scrounge for cash by money matching scrubs that they KNOW they will beat just to make cash or money match to pay a ****ing venue fee. Are you kidding me? That kind of **** pisses me off and really makes me look down upon the Melee community.

Basically what I'm saying is that I don't think Brawl players are any more "scrubbish" or "stupid" than Melee players and vice versa. Both sides of the community have their flaws and I think people need to step it up.

I look down on the Melee community because I find some of them to be elitist pricks and are full of themselves. "It's not Melee so I could care less about Brawl." "Brawl Sucks!" Have you ever seen a Brawl player go out of his way to bash Melee? No. Melee veterans are much more egotistical and full of themselves.

I look down on the Brawl community because some of them are just in plain denial about how campy Brawl is and the fact that it really is nowhere near as deep or complex as Melee is.

So I play Melee more so for the gameplay and the learning and I play Brawl because the people are nice and much more easy going.

Does anyone agree with this or generally find this to be true? I'm not saying EVERYONE pertains to this but I am saying generally within the communities. There are DEFINITELY exceptions of people that do not fill this stereotype.

There are a lot of Melee players that I love to see and hangout with and there are some that I can live without. The same goes for Brawl too.

In conclusion: The Melee players need to drop their ****ing attitudes and egos and the Brawl players need to step it up and realize Melee is the better game.

There I said it. lol.

I'm hoping this can spark some intelligent discussion? :)

rofl that doesn't make me elitist, i couldn't care less about a lot of things, like supermonkeyball or indonesia

but ya i agree the main problem with the melee community is that they are cheap

Nice post man.

I have no idea what the melee/brawl scene is like over there so I can't really comment.

I personally don't like brawl because it doesnt give me that "rush" that high level melee does.

Combo videos in melee are way more epic too.

Wow. I've......been so blind....
If I knew that playing melee was a one way ticket to being an elitest prick, then I would've picked it up a long time ago.

I think I'm actually going to start playing more melee. I'm being serious.
Now to find some real people to play.

I enjoyed reading your post btw. Majority of what you said seems fairly accurate. Though, I've never known of any brawl players specifically saying that brawl has a higher learning curve/is more technically advanced/etc than melee.
